1940's

Frank Witherell Jr. ¹46 is one of about 100 naval personnel who attended NU as trainees to become Naval Supply Officers. They were students at NU from March ¹44 until July ¹45 as apprentice seamen in the U.S. Navy. After leaving NU, most went on to become Navy Supply Officers. With the termination of WWII, many of the class continued their careers in the Navy, while others returned to civilian life. Frank still has two classmates as friends. One, William Victor, continued his career in the Navy and retired as a commander. The other, Charles Walker, returned to civilian life for a successful career. Frank would enjoy hearing from any classmate.

Len Matthews ¹48 now lives and works in Rancho Sante Fe, Calif. After retiring from the presidency of the American Association of Advertising Agencies in New York, he became the chairman of Next Century Media, an interactive television company in Rancho Santa Fe. In 1999, he was elected to the Advertising Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Dorothy Fessler, have been married for 58 years. They have three children and ten grandchildren and have frequently visited the American West, Europe and China.

Kathryn Wilkening Bailey ¹48 and her husband Vernon C. Bailey II ¹47 write from Scottsdale, Ariz. Katie remains busy volunteering in both church and community organizations. They are both members of the NU Club of Phoenix. The Baileys have been married for 52 years and enjoy a family of three children and five grandchildren. Their favorite travel destinations have been in the great American West, and this year they added many European locations.

Raymond Mals ¹48 lives in Wilmette, Ill., where he has conducted his business, MALCO Inc., for many years. His firm specializes in personal and succession planning, including setting up benefit arrangements. Ray and his wife, Meg, are proud of their family of seven children (all of whom have now completed their college years) and 19 grandchildren. Their daughter, Mary Kay Bissing, completed a residency in anesthesiology and a fellowship in cardiac pediatric anesthesiology at Northwestern¹s Medical Center in 1983.

Irene Harris Montgomery ¹48 of Chicago has retired from a career in administrative work in the Chicago school system. She has a son and two daughters, and enjoys good health after her long career.

Sol Alpert ¹48 of Evanston, Ill., has retired from the controllership of Marketing Information Systems, which was also located in Evanston. However, he still does part-time accounting work, including volunteer income tax service for the AARP each year. He and his wife, Anna, have two children and five grandchildren.
