dcoven1992@kellogg.northwestern.edu All is well with Kevin Hykes in sunny Southern California. Boston Scientific acquired his company, Cameron Health, last summer. After six months helping with the integration, he left to spend more time at home. "After only four weeks," he says, his wife "has updated my resume and is now setting up calls with recruiters."
Amber Elenz was recently elected to serve on the Austin Independent School District's Board of Trustees. The district educates about 87,000 students, with just over 11,000 employees and a $1 billion budget. Her Kellogg education has served her well: "I find daily use for the knowledge and skills I gained from my outstanding professors and classmates." Her daughter, Aubrey, is a freshman at NYU studies theater, and her son, Reed, is a high school freshman. Her husband, Doug, serves as one of the University of Texas' orthopedic surgeons. Doug also has a full-time private practice.
Gary Dvorchak just finished his third year at investor relations firm Integrated Corporate Relations Inc. ICR is the largest IR firm on Wall Street. Gary leads the clean technology practice, representing companies in the biofuels, wastewater treatment and natural gas engine industries. The Dvorchak family has lived in the same Hollywood Hills house for the past 14 years. Their two daughters are now 13 and 11 years old.
After four and a half great years in Asia, Eric Degenfelder and family have returned to their home in West Chester, Penn. As transformation director, he now has a special assignment to set up DuPont Performance Coatings business as a multi-billion dollar standalone company following its recent sale to Carlyle Group. He writes: "A 2012 highlight was The Great Wall Marathon last May, which included 20,000 steps and only about 120 participants. Grueling, but beautiful and fun!"
After a very enjoyable six-month break from the working world, Leo Hermacinski took on a consulting project that led to a full-time role as CEO of dSide Technologies. "After 20 years of consulting to companies with customers, revenues and all the trappings of prior success," Leo is "having a blast leading a small team" in building their first product and finding customers. He invites any of his classmates who "know something about e-commerce and search [to] please get in touch; I'm open to any and all ideas!"
Fred Christensen realized that epic adventures take a lot of time away from his family. This summer they are sticking together and trekking in Yoho National Park, a jewel of the Canadian Rockies. Lisa Krutzel Katzman has spent the last five years independently writing, consulting and marketing for her husband's consultancy, Optisave. Optisave provides strategic tech and sourcing solutions for hospital chains and Fortune 500 companies. It specializes in cost reduction, electronic medical records selection and vendor/carrier contract negotiations. Her son, David, a junior in high school and captain of his hockey team, has begun the college search and would love to be a Wildcat! Together with his sister Caroline, a competitive figure skater, the two kids keep the family busy traveling nationwide.
Brett Knickerbocker of Johnson & Johnson DePuy met up with classmate Andrew Jay at a benefit for the Mass Oyster Project, which is restoring oyster beds in Boston Harbor. The two have been connected along with other classmates Phil Tan, Mike Ferry and Jeff Granato through NPG Investments, an investment club formed by their new products group that has grown more than sevenfold in the ensuing years.
Lisa Curland took a sabbatical from the for-profit world to run a summer jobs program for welfare moms through Youth Opportunities Unlimited. It was incredible to get to know the women in the program and watch them succeed, many of them in their first-ever work experience. She has now returned to the world of consumer goods, where she continues to seek out opportunities to help manufacturers and retailers achieve profitable growth.
Ruby and Tom Wieser are the proud parents of a new baby girl, Olivia. She's cute as a button.
Julia Cassidy Fitzgerald accepted a position as chief marketing officer at Sylvan Learning Center. Sylvan is located in Baltimore, so she will be commuting from Chicago. Her son, a freshman at USC, calls it her "Chitimore life." Speaking of USC, she saw Jim"Iron Man" Winnett, Kristen and Mike Simmons, Greg Yen, and David and Yolanda Macias when she went to enroll her son in classes. She writes: "They're now his local 'adults in charge' contacts; it's good to have friends all over the country."
Katka and Steve Rappaport proudly report from Prague the birth of their second son Joshua Maxwell on September 1. Their sons and their new cash and carry wholesale store are all growing very quickly. In 2012, their import/distribution business nearly doubled in size, and they have added new salespeople, items and markets. In 2013, they will represent Quaker Oats, Hormel Brands and Jamie Oliver Foods in addition to their existing portfolio of more than 1400 items. They really enjoyed the reunion, and look forward to any visits from Class of '92 alumni.
John Fanning reports that Donna Case Kelleher and her husband Jim took him on a tour of Fossil Rim animal sanctuary while he was minding his brother's four kids. He and the kids "had a riotous time" petting giraffe tongues and feeding gazelles.
Former portfolio manager and managing director at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers Paul Meeks was appointed by Saturna Capital Corporation in Bellingham, Wash., to the dual role of director of institutional investing and senior equity analyst.
Chris Rhoades has been chairman of M2 Renewables for some time, working extensively on its strategy design. Last autumn, his venture capital firm, SAIL Capital Partners, offered him the role of CEO at M2R, which he accepted. Based in Orange County, Calif., M2R has a disruptive technology with global potential for industrial and municipal wastewater treatment. It's an exciting time, as M2R becomes globally recognized for its breakthrough approach, realizes strategic partner and license deals, and lands its first commercial purchase orders.
Carter Cast joined Kellogg as a part-time professor in 2012, and taught his first class in entrepreneurship last fall. "I enjoyed it greatly," he says, "and will teach again this spring." He also joined New World Ventures, a Chicago-based venture capital firm. He is a venture partner and works closely with other Kellogg grads Matt McCall and Adam Koopersmith '00.
Bernie Armstrong and Dan Verbic both attended the wedding of John Prunier '91 in New York last autumn. "The snow has been falling this year in the Alps," Bernie says, "and I am hoping to see some classmates make the decision to come ski over here this year."
Recent highlights in Rafael Covenstrong>'s life have been teaching his daughter how to ski and a quick Baltimore visit from David Murphy. Besides helping David find his mother's childhood home, the two friends took some time to enjoy some local fare while in Fells Point. They also discussed the global business development strategy of David's exciting clean tech company, Aqua Sciences. Rafael expects PaceControls, his own Philadelphia-based company where he is vice president of business development, to grow severalfold this year.
