1990

Hope all of you are experiencing a summer of rest and relative obscurity, far from the worlds of energy trading and congressional hearings. (Although I've sometimes questioned the wisdom of career decisions that landed me in chemical plants and steel-toed boots, it's been kind of nice lately not rating an appearance on the front pages of the WSJ.)

Always good to hear from MBA-turned-MD Susan Schaberg, who had this recent news of friends to pass along: "I got together with Susie (Carolyn Forsen) Blatt the weekend of April 20. She continues to be doing very well, enjoying small-town life in Washington, Mo. with her husband, Carl, and two pretty, blonde daughters, Callie (9) and Clara (5). Her husband is doing very well in his GI practice. She and Carl are designing a new home for the six acres they purchased. I also keep up with Karen Li, who lives in Old Greenwich, Conn., with her husband, Mark Koide '89."

From Susan's lead, I was able to contact Karen (KLi@SpencerStuart.com) and beg her for an update. She graciously complied and wrote the following: "Mark and I welcomed our third child, Theodore Li Koide, on Oct. 1. Teddy joins siblings Jennifer (6 1/2) and Tommy (4). I am a recruiter with Spencer Stuart, focusing on marketing assignments in the consumer packaged goods arena. I get to catch up with a lot of Kellogg classmates! Mark is at a start-up
organic food company called Acirca (they make Walnut Acres products). Life with two full-time working parents and three kids is busy but fun - there's never a dull moment!" (Busy? Never dull? My children are the same ages as Karen's children and I can barely work an adequate tooth-brushing into my day, much
less a stimulating full-time job. Huge reverence for all of you out there who do both.)

I was able to contact another of our ever-energetic classmates, Ginna Zinke, who wrote, "Hearty hello to all! After navigating the worlds of outdoor adventure, high tech and community life for nine years in Seattle, this girl found her way back to her roots in the Northeast last October. "I'm now living in Cambridge, Mass., and thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to reconnect with family and friends in the Boston area.

Career theme has been bridging private sector and non-profit/social mission work. As of June 3, I begin work as chief strategy officer at the Dana Farber Harvard Cancer Center, focused on technology translation, detection, prevention and treatment of cancer. "On the side, I'm late in the game this year, but training with enthusiasm for a balanced season of triathlons and New England antiquing. Recent highlight was a gregarious gathering of '90 alums hosted by Martha Stuart and attended by Fatima Ezzat Penrose, Kathy Fuller, Liz Hiser, Genny Burke (special guest) and myself. Wonderful
reunion! "Settling into New England, I very much welcome visitors or notes
from Kellogg alums (e-mail: ginnaz5@Hotmail.com). Have a great summer!"

Neil Kaplan (neil@carsdirect.com) and his family are thriving in Los Angeles. Neil and his wife, Adele, live close to the beach with their three children, Max (9), Jeffrey (6) and Julie (3). Neil has spent the last two and a half years at a start-up and was recently promoted to senior vice president of strategic development for CarsDirect.com, the nation's leading automotive Web site. He reports that not only did CarsDirect survive the Internet shakeout, but that it's doing better than ever and rapidly expanding. CarsDirect has recently won
awards from Forbes, Yahoo Life and Time magazine. He encouraged everyone to check with CarsDirect before buying a car.

Francis A. Ortega wrote from Sao Paulo, Brazil to say that he is vice
president of derivatives for Dresdner Bank.

This summer, I'd love to hear from each and every one of you '90 alums. If you can answer no to any of the following, you owe your classmates an update. Have you submitted an update since you last changed jobs? Moved? Taken a sabbatical? Attempted a triathlon? Graduated from Kellogg? Come on. A quick note to trotter5@swbell.net will do you good.
