He writes: "It is with great sadness to let you know that Jon Scholes passed away on Oct. 18. As many of you were aware, Jon had been courageously battling cancer for the last 15 months. Jon defeated the initial cancer through a grueling treatment of chemotherapy and radiation. However, as is too often the case with this cruel disease, the cancer appeared again. Jon fought bravely to the end, never giving up hope that he could overcome the disease. As Lance Armstrong, one of Jon's heroes, said, surviving cancer is more about luck than about how strong you are. While Jon had admirable strength and the support of loving friends and family, luck was the element that was unfortunately missing. Scholesy was a great friend to many of us. Jon touched many of our hearts, whether you knew him as an untidy roommate, as a member of your ice hockey team, as a fellow contributor on the Kellogg Service Initiative or as a friend and classmate. He had a desire to make an impact in his life. Jon served in Haiti in the Peace Corps before Kellogg, was involved in several service initiatives at Kellogg and was even helping to make life-saving drugs from his company, Genzyme, available in Latin America. Jon also liked the lighter side of life. He had a mischievous sense of humor and the ear-to-ear grin on his face would be the warning sign of an imminent prank. He loved a good party and his stretch blue Elvis outfit was seen at more Kellogg parties than anyone would have liked. He was also just a great guy with whom to share a beer.

"One bright spot from the last two years for Jon was that he met Susanne while she was studying and working in Boston. Those close to Jon witnessed how smitten he was and immediately knew that Susanne was the future Mrs. Scholes. After only a few months into their relationship, however, Jon learned about his cancer. Susanne has been amazing for Jon throughout his illness, by providing him with unending support, love and companionship and by helping his family as they tried to cope. Jon and Susanne managed to take a trip to Santorini, Greece, during one brief respite from his treatment, and it was there where Jon proposed. They married in Boston on Sept. 7. Susanne has been inspirational to everyone through the strength that she has displayed. The doctors and nurses in Jon's ward at Mass General were especially impressed with her spirit.

"His wife, family and several of his closest friends were with him at the end. It will bring a smile to your faces to know that Jon was wearing his beloved Bowdoin sweatshirt and was listening to Johnny Cash as we said our goodbyes. He will be missed but never forgotten and will be waiting for us when our times come, with that Scholesy grin.

"A number of Kellogg alumni will be cycling the 150 miles from New York to Montauk, Long Island, in memory of Jon. We will be raising money for the Lance Armstrong foundation, one of Jon's favorite charities. If you would like to join the ride on May 18, e-mail thomas.stokes@gs.com. If you would like to make a donation, visit livestrong.org/grassroots/ridingforjonathan. Full details for the ride can be found at 5bbc.org/montauk, where you can also register if you intend to ride."

Neal Freeland recently moved to Zango, a privately held online media and advertising company, as their vice president of online marketing.

Jennifer (Crump) Antonow shares this news with us. "We recently relocated from Chicago to Palo Alto, Calif., where my husband, Eric Antonow '00, is working for Google. I am home working for our two crazy kids, Ben and Clare. We'd love to reconnect with any Kellogg friends in the Bay Area."

Lex Leeming recently joined an LBO fund in New York after leaving American Express in May 2006 and says they are busy raising a second fund and reviewing new investments. Lex would love to reconnect with any classmates in New York or those who are just passing through, so please stay in touch.

Alak Goswami is embarking on the Tour d'Afrique bike excursion from Cairo, Egypt, to Cape Town, South Africa, with the goal to bring clean water to communities across that continent. The tour crosses more than 7,000 miles and will take about four months to complete. Alak's journey began Jan. 12, and he will keep us posted on what is sure to be both an epic and scenic journey through his blog and pictures available through his Web site: gogoswami.com.

Michael Schreiber was promoted to vice president, sales business development, for NBC Universal (NBCU) Digital Distribution division. He is responsible for leading the execution of new distribution deals for NBCU content with Internet, wireless and emerging technology partners.

Tom Stokes and Vicki Tung married Sept. 8 in Buckinghamshire, England. Tom says: "We would like to thank our Kellogg friends for traveling to England to celebrate our wedding. Friends in attendance included Andrew Quarles, Stacey Quarles, Rowie Villaneuva, Gizman Abbas, Juanita Abbas, Scott Roen, Renee Roen, Dyson Bogg, Sarah Bogg, Alyssa Camara, Alvaro Camara, Jenny Milward and Ian Milward. Sadly my best man Jon Scholes was battling cancer at the time and could not join us at the wedding, but Jon did manage to write a very moving best man speech."

Stephen Snyder shares his latest news: "I continue to serve as a VP for RCBG, a management consultancy focused on high tech and telecom business strategy. My most important news is the birth of my daughter, Maggie (full name Margaret Perry Snyder), on Sept. 4. She joins older brother Tom (born May 2005), and the two are the most wonderful, challenging, and surprising opportunities for success, frustration and joy that my wife Anna and I have ever experienced. As a lot of our fellow Kellogg colleagues know, kids are the best."

Dan Slivjanovski and Kate Solomon welcomed Rush Jay Slivanovski to the world on May 30, 2007.

Steve Pockross updates us with some exciting news: "I'm happy to introduce my son Zeca Ryan Pockross, born to my wife, Jen Sarche, and me on Dec. 3. We're enjoying learning new ways to get him to sleep and setting up playdates with other recent Kellogg babies in the Bay Area, like Maeve Norton (Evan and Katie Norton) and George Stubbins (with Ed Stubbins and wife Ashley) and looking forward to hanging out with Cecilia Lutz (Jim and Carly Loveman Lutz) as well. At work, I'm enjoying my fourth year at LiveOps, a private virtual call center technology and services company based in Palo Alto. The company has been rapidly expanding and I'm enjoying the ride."

Brian Lyke writes: "Martha and I have some good and exciting news to share. We welcomed Lilliana Rosalie Lyke into the world on Jan. 11. Martha and I have been enjoying life as parents, but need to catch up on sleep soon."

Allison Small writes: "The Small family grew again last year. Kathryn "Kate" was born Nov. 1 and joins Will (5) and Holly (3). We are extra busy and having a lot of fun with our full house. We're still in Arizona so call us for a play date when you are visiting."

Stephanie (Levine) Fong tells us: My husband Ryan Fong '01 and I are having a blast with our daughter Zoe, who was born March 18, 2007. We're enjoying watching her crawl, stand and make her first motions toward walking. We can't believe we're almost about to celebrate her first birthday. Ryan is enjoying his work at Yahoo! and I'm still at Abbott Vascular (formerly Guidant) and was recently promoted to group marketing manager.

Ed and Ashley Stubbins are excited to announce the birth of their son, George Edward Stubbins III. George was born Oct. 10 and is a complete joy to his parents. He's always happy and smiling. The Stubbins family is still in San Francisco and is enjoying getting together with other Bay Area alumni and their kids. Ed works at hedge fund Symphony Asset Management and Ashley is in marketing for Del Monte Foods.

Melissa Cooper shares some fun news. "We welcomed another little girl last May. Samantha Addison Cooper arrived a few weeks early on May 19. Kate is having a great time in her new role as big sister. Lucky for us the Kellogg network came through big and helped us land Cameron Janes as our Manny/Dog Whisperer. He was terrific with our two under 2 and our dog. Unfortunately, in September he decide to change careers and went to work for Amazon. The Shearers and Marines are lucky to have him in Seattle."
