1994 — Full-Time

This issue of Class Notes is dedicated to the memory of David Lavine. Linda (Anderson) Lavine wrote to let us know of the passing of her husband, and fellow classmate, David Lavine, from lung cancer on Jan. 7.

In Linda's words: "I'm happy to say David left us with few regrets about how he spent his 40 years of life. Luckily, over the past four to five years he spent a lot of time reassessing his life, trying to spend more time with his family and working on his own spiritual development. He became very interested in some of the tenets of Buddhism. He was always reminding me to slow down and try to enjoy the moment. I know many of us have crazy, hectic lives but as I think back to what made me the happiest over the past 14 years, it's been the lunches we had as a family, our talks during walks and car rides, and the times we just hung out with our friends.

"We were lucky enough to have traveled a great deal, taking leaves of absence from our careers and actually finding a way to work in Santiago, Chile, for almost four years. David took several calculated risks with his career, working as a consultant, at a high tech startup, and most recently with a childhood friend (Julius Mokrauer, who visited us often at Kellogg) to develop a model for a commodity trading fund that will be launched soon. He spent the last six months of his life in New York, surrounded by friends and family — we have two sons, Benjamin (4) and Adyn (3) — and fighting this disease every way he could. His memorial service was a true testimony to how he lived his life, and our Kellogg classmates Larry Rusoff and Brian Saltzman were among those who spoke."

A fund for lung cancer research has been set up in David's name. If you are interested in contributing, checks can be made payable to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center with a comment on the check that states, "In memory of David Lavine." Donations can be sent to: Attn: Hugh B. Kelly, Office of Development, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, 633 Third Ave., 28th Floor, New York, NY 10017. Tel. 646.227.2709.
