1978
Hi, classmates.
Our 30th reunion is coming soon, and you should have received
a registration mailing that summarizes the weekend's terrific
events. For more information, visit the reunion Web site at
kellogg.northwestern.edu/alumni/reunions, and don't
forget to complete the News & Notes narrative at alumni.kellogg.northwestern.edu/reunion/news-submit,
whether or not you plan attend.
With
sadness, I share the news of the passing last October of classmate
Alexis Calliacoudas. Alexis' son, Dimitris, writes
that Alexis suffered a stroke, and five of his organs were
successfully transplanted to recipients. The Kellogg family
extends our sympathy to the Calliacoudas family.

Alan
Brodie writes: "Ilana and I have been happily living
in Southern California since 1982, and became U.S. citizens
in 1985. We travel internationally frequently, especially
to visit Ilana's parents in Cape Town, South Africa, our original
home.
"After
nearly six years at Brunswick Corporation, during which time
I transferred from the Chicago area to Southern California,
I left the Fortune 500 arena. I joined a major financial and
insurance services company and started my own financial planning
practice, which is now more than 24 years old. We specialize
in retirement planning and life and disability income insurance
for professionals, executives and owners of small companies.
We also cover company pension and 401(k) plans.
"Ilana
has been a residential real estate agent here in Orange County
for nearly 20 years, and we have both participated in community
matters and raised our two children: Michael (you remember
him running around campus as a two- and three-year-old) and
Jessica (born in February 1978 before we graduated). Michael
is in financial services sales at the broker-dealer level
and is married to an attorney, Rachael. We have just become
grandparents for the first time, as Benjamin arrived in October
last year. They live close to us here in Irvine, Calif. Jessica
is an activities director at a home for the elderly in San
Francisco. We hope she'll also get married and start a family
in the not-too-distant future."
Iris
Newman Stone writes: "I have been living in the Bay Area
for more than 25 years and am a senior vice president for
Bank of America. I have a consulting and oversight role addressing
execution risks for large projects. I am working on the integration
of LaSalle Bank into Bank of America, so I have the opportunity
to travel to Chicago regularly. I usually see classmate Ellen
Baras when I am there. I hope to attend our 30th reunion
in May. I am married with no children. My husband, Patrick,
and I will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary this fall.
We love to travel and are planning a trip to China this spring."
Ben Ball
writes to share the short version of his history since graduating
from Kellogg: five years at General Mills marketing, 10 years
at PepsiCo (Frito Lay and then PepsiCo Foods International)
and 15 years at DHC Holdings Inc. "I left PepsiCo as
marketing VP for the Australasian unit of PFI, based in Sydney,
to return to the U.S. and join a couple of friends at DHC.
We have a sales and marketing consulting firm (Dechert-Hampe
& Co.) and a B2B communications agency (MossWarner Communications)
with offices in Connecticut, California and Northbrook, Ill.
(I didn't want to commute downtown anymore.)
"I
have three children, including a daughter who is a freshman
at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, another who
is a junior there and a son who graduated from the University
of St. Thomas in December with a marketing degree. (Anyone
need an undergrad marketing intern?)
"Home
is Libertyville, Ill., so we are still in the Chicago area.
The businesses have been kind, and we are trying to spend
more time at the mountain place near Ashville, N.C. —
but not nearly enough, yet. I would love to hear from anyone
in the class, especially those still around town."
Alan
Levow writes: "Alan Engel and I went into
partnership and formed a real-estate development and investment
company in 1984 that today is known as Crowne Partners, Inc.
We primarily develop large luxury apartment communities and
have developed or invested in properties that lie in 11 states
and 20 cities. Generally, we build to own for the long term
and, therefore, not only build the communities but also manage
them. I guess you could say that we took the Kellogg emphasis
on working in groups to heart, because we first began to collaborate
in Dr. Lerner's case-study finance course and have been successfully
working together ever since."
Peggy
Cleary writes: "I am still with the San Francisco
Unified School District but am looking for a new challenge
in educational administration, health administration, or a
nonprofit organization. My husband, Peter, is at Juniper Networks
in Sunnyvale, Calif. Daughter Megan is a cell biology sophomore
at UC Davis, while daughter Alison is working on her doctorate
in biological oceanography at the University of Rhode Island
Graduate School of Oceanography. We welcome guests to our
beautiful city."
Colin Kresock
writes: "I retired from R.R. Donnelley last
summer after a 25-year sales and management career in Chicago,
Los Angeles, Cleveland and Denver. In September, I joined
Moreton & Company, a business insurance brokerage headquartered
in Salt Lake City. I very much enjoy the business and the
people, and work out of Moreton's Denver office in the Tech
Center."
Don Hartmann
writes: "We recently relocated from Ventura to Eureka,
Calif., where I took on a job as SVP/chief credit officer
at Redwood Capital Bank, the only locally owned and operated
bank in Humboldt County. Our son, Bruce, will graduate this
spring from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and our
daughter, Roxanne, will graduate from high school. She is
waiting to hear from a number of Cal State schools."
Kevin
Nolan writes to say he is still with Navigant Consulting
Inc., where he is managing director responsible for the firm's
healthcare strategy practice. "I am based in D.C., which
makes it easy for me to see my daughter, Erin, who is a freshman
at American University. I am on the road pretty much constantly.
I recently caught up (separately) with classmates Mark
Sibben and Bill Eggbeer and am happy to report
that both are doing well."
Michael
Lehman was recently promoted to administrative vice president
of M&T Bank in Buffalo. "I have been with the bank
for six years," he writes, "and manage the ATM Services
Group. M&T is a top-25 bank with retail operations in
six Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states."
Dominique
Mathieu writes: "Nancy and I will also celebrate our
30th anniversary in France this summer. We moved to Duxbury,
Mass., in 2006 after several years in Montreal, and have enjoyed
being back in the states, reconnecting with family and making
new friends in New England. I recently joined Computer Sciences
Corporation as a partner within the strategic services group,
with a focus on technology strategy to help major clients
drive the most value from their technology-enabled business
solutions. Our sons operate in Detroit and Scottsdale, respectively,
and our daughter is finishing high school, with a passion
for photography and sports."
Steven
Weinstein, president and managing director of Chicago-based
Altair Advisers, was selected by Barron's as one of
the Top 100 Independent Financial Advisers and was named to
Worth's roster of the Nation's Top 100 Wealth Advisors
for the sixth time.
