We live in a world of increasing political turmoil, and this uncertainty affects and disrupts the landscape of business. Unstable political environments require savvy decisions on the part of business leaders. In this session, participants will learn how to cope with the implications of ongoing political change from business leaders who have navigated political unrest.

Stephen Anderson State Department Visiting Fellow, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs

Stephen C. Anderson is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. He served as deputy chief of mission and Chargé d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Antananarivo, Madagascar from 2014 to 2017, where he was responsible for restoring full diplomatic relations after a 2009 coup. Previously, he served as spokesperson at the U.S. Embassy in Rome, Italy and has served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan focused mainly on the management of provincial reconstruction teams. Anderson is the recipient of numerous State Department superior and meritorious honor awards and he holds an M.S. in applied economics and a B.A. in economics from Marquette University.

David Austen-Smith is the Peter G. Peterson professor of corporate ethics and a professor of political science and economics. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Cambridge University in 1978. Professor Austen-Smith is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Econometric Society, and the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory. He is also a charter member of the Game Theory Society. He publishes widely on positive political theory, social choice and applied game theory.

Juan Simón Mendoza Gimenez is a member of the board of directors of Bebidas Polar C.A. and Alimentos Polar C.A. He is one of the seven members of the executive committee, and also holds a seat on the audit committee of Empresas Polar. He holds a degree in law from Universidad Católica Andres Bello and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management with a concentration in international business, finance and marketing. Mendoza is the president of the Chamber of Venezuelan Business and vice president of the Venezuelan Chamber of Investments Promotion Agency. He has been the President of the Venezuelan Executives Association, and is a member of the Y.P.O. – W.P.O. Venezuelan Chapter.
