Introducing KPPI

“Rethinking ‘Shareholder Value’ and the Purpose of the Corporation” is jointly sponsored by the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and the Aspen Institute Business and Society Program. The conference is the first major event hosted by the Kellogg Public-Private Initiative (KPPI), directed by Nicola Persico, professor of Managerial Economics & Decision Sciences.

KPPI synthesizes Kellogg's and Northwestern University's thought leadership on issues at the boundary between the public and private spheres of the global economy.

A Message from the Director

Global health, aging populations, and investment in infrastructure and human capital present daunting challenges in the best of times. But in the 21st century, while national governments are overburdened with debt or stymied by political gridlock, there are few global institutions that can address these problems.

As a consequence, private sector leaders find themselves stepping into new and unfamiliar roles in which they must collaborate across economic and political boundaries not only for private gain, but also for the public good.

The Kellogg Public-Private Initiative is committed to producing cutting-edge research — the practical knowledge that business leaders need to build strong organizations that will meet these challenges.

KPPI will also be a platform for perspectives and commentary that are accessible outside the confines of academia. We expect that the initiative’s work will engage leaders across the public and nonprofit sectors — including government, NGOs and activists — across all ideological boundaries. The Kellogg-Aspen Conference is the beginning of that discussion.

The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University is a premier institution for management education — a global community that believes business can be bravely led, passionately collaborative and world changing. Founded in 1908 and based just outside of Chicago, Kellogg is home to a renowned, research-based faculty and MBA students from around the world. The Kellogg School’s academic portfolio includes the Full-Time, Part-Time and Executive MBA Programs, the PhD Program, and the non-degree Executive Education Program. The school offers two joint-degree programs: the JD-MBA and the MMM (MBA-MEM). Additionally, the school offers an Executive MBA Program at its campus in Miami and has forged partnerships with leading business schools in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Canada.

The Aspen Institute Business & Society Program builds on 60 years of Aspen Institute programming to help established and emerging business leaders put values at the heart of practice. Through dialogue, research, and outreach, this program creates opportunities for executives and educators to explore new routes to business sustainability and values-based leadership.
