2003

All right, Kellogg Class of 2003. This is the moment you've all been waiting for. The contestants have given their all in some of the best Class Notes the mail lady has ever flipped through. The judge, sitting here by himself in a pair of 1970s gym shorts and still-funny "I'm With Stupid" T-shirt, sipping a cool Labatt Blue, while simultaneously watching "Dancing with the Stars II: The Faceoff," has voted. And you, the reading public, have waited for MONTHS for the results. Or at least, since the top of this paragraph.

I am now proud, honored and proud again to present this edition's Kellogg World Champs, broken into our six usual categories:

Category 1: You had me at "Investment Banker"

class of 2003
After the wedding of Steve Atkins and Corinne Foo (both '03), friends gather to "desaturate." Clockwise from front: Phyllis Lim, Sam Benedict Lim '03, Steve Atkins '03, Tiur Hutabarat '04, KB Teo '02, Jan Sodprasert '03, Corinne (Foo) Atkins '03, Phillia Wibowo '03 and husband Christian. Not in picture, but at the reception: George Verghese '03 and Metinee Levarapakul '04.

As we all know, love begins with Steve Atkins and Corinne Foo. In what can be described as nothing less than a slightly hectic year, Steve moved from Novo Nordisk to Deloitte Consulting, Steve and Corinne moved from Princeton to San Francisco, and they also moved from being engaged to being married. Their wedding was in mid-May in Steve's hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon in the U.K. (that's England), where they were joined by Kelloggians arriving from the U.S. and various parts of Europe. David "The Voice" Grant sang several songs with the live band during the lull in dancing during the evening. Then, the newlyweds went on to Singapore for part two, where friends from Kellogg came from around Southeast Asia to celebrate their special occasion with them. Who needs Model UN?

And the 2005 Corinne Summit continued, as Kristian Traylor married Corinne Tso in Atlanta, Ga. on June 4. This follows their move to Atlanta in October of 2004. Kellogg attendees included fellow poets Greg Kennealey and Ed Bird. Kristian is working for Ariba Corporation in operations, and is doing well down south.

And joining the Atlanta love train, Mike Ebner married Suganthi Simon on Aug. 27 in Hotlanta. Kellogg was well-represented at the celebration and Jim McIntyre proved that he is finally getting old by NOT joining the couple at the bar after the wedding reception. Wait — I need to read that once more to make sure I read it right. OK — wow. Mike is a manager at a guar manufacturing plant in Dalton, Ga. and Suganthi works for EPA in Atlanta. We're assuming you all know what guar is, and have never smoked it. They stay busy by working on their 105-year-old home in midtown Atlanta and are quickly assimilating to southern living.

And our lovely songbird has broken some hearts, gentlemen. On July 30, Katarina Athanasopoulos was married in a little seaside town in Greece called Astros, about a three-hour drive from Athens. Sniff.

Our worldwide wedding tour continues with Paige Francis. She and David Flueck (not Fleck) were married last Oct. 9, 2004 (finally, and just shy of their three-year engagement anniversary!) on a beautiful fall day in Toronto. They spent two weeks honeymooning in Spain and Portugal, completely misjudged the weather, and had to buy warmer clothes. Paige reports that they fell in love with both countries and seriously wish they could all adopt the European lifestyle over here. Including leather pants.

But alas, Paige is still living in NYC and working in White Plains at Starwood Hotels & Resorts. Since starting, she has returned to her luxury roots by joining the St. Regis brand team as director of brand operations and guest experience. She says that life is good, except for her constant longing for a back deck with the arrival of summer.

Williamston, Mich., has never seen a finer wedding than that of Pam Supanwanid and Jan Henrich on Aug. 13. Kellogg friends shared in the festivities, dancing to Thai music, putting their ninth-grade German language skills to the test and celebrating beautiful young love.

And, another dream down the drain, fellas. Sue Lee's married now, taking the lucky hand of Adam Sabow '04.

But wait, there's more! There goes our very own Jenny Liang, walking down the aisle with Ian Milward '02. Way to go, guys! We saw this one coming . . .

And how does Will Hahn fit into all this weddingness? Well, while on a two-week vacation in Costa Rica to celebrate his longtime girlfriend's graduation from medical school, he proposed to her! He had also planned a surprise wedding down to the last detail (held three days later in Manuel Antonio National Park), including flying in their family. Jillene said yes, her dress fit perfectly, and she loved all of Will's efforts. Says Will, "Yes, she looked stunning." He also says that if she said "No," then this photo would be of him drunk in a lovely white dress. Ick. He and Jillene have recently moved to the Washington, D.C. area, where they will spend the next three years as she completes her medical residency.

And finally, let's not forget our still-newlyweds, Arturo Vera and Denise Lazo. They celebrated their second anniversary in Paris this past July!

Category 2: Babies Making Babies

And Suresh Khanna shows us how! Suresh is happily settled in San Francisco, where he reports that he and Anamika were blessed to have a baby girl last November, whom they named Jiya. Big brother Karam is almost 4 and speaks longingly of his days in Chicago (though he's making it all up). Suresh has been at SAP for the last year, enjoying the turmoil created by Oracle's attempts at world domination.

Kim Swanson was up to bat next. She and Dan had a baby boy, Cohen, on May 9. He was a big one at 9 pounds, 2 ounces and is doing great. Kim and Dan are still living in Grayslake, Ill. She's going on to her third year at SC Johnson and has just started working on Windex marketing.

And a quick update on the Zang-Sagiv family: Life in Seattle and Microsoft has been keeping Shira and Avi busy. After purchasing their first home last year, they welcomed their daughter Orr to the world. Orr (meaning 'light' in Hebrew) was born June 21, weighing 7 pounds, 9 ounces. She is now 3 months old, smiling and laughing a lot and getting ready for her first trip to Israel to meet all her family and friends.

And our very own Michelle Lev and her husband Eric are delighted to announce the birth of their beautiful daughter, Emily Hayden Lev, born May 22.

class of 2003
Taking a break from training in San Fran, from left, are Nevin Yuksel, Bruno Carvalho, Mandy Taft, and Neil Chernoff (all '03).

Esteban Delgado is proud to present the new Delgado Family! Tiana and Esteban brought new Longhorn (and U2 fan) Alexandra Brielle into the great state of Texas on June 14, weighing in at 8 pounds, 8 ounces and stretching a mere 20 1/4 inches.

Even Mike Hessling has big news! On July 6, beautiful Iris Brianna entered his life. Well done, Mike!

And last, but far, far from least, Oeds Jan and Janny Postma became the happy parents of Friso. Oeds Jan reports he is 7 months old at the time of writing this, and a (maybe somewhat overly) healthy and joyful baby. That means no more cycling holidays in Alaska, but a quiet, relaxed holiday in Germany. Being a parent himself now, it also gives a new dimension to his work for UNICEF. He started there as the head of BTC fundraising after graduation and says it is a great opportunity to give back!

Category 3: What the *#$*!! was I thinking back in 2003?

After five years of consulting, Fabio Sisinni has left ATK and accepted a position in the industry. He has joined the strategy group of Motorola Mobile Devices in Libertyville, Ill. In particular, he will be driving Motorola's global efforts to further expand the growing phone accessories business (headsets, MP3 and media players, Bluetooth, etc.). Fabio reports that the decision has been difficult, as he had a great experience at ATK, but he is very excited about the new job and less travel (along with more limited Red Bull consumption).

John Kim is also reporting big career news. He's accepted a position with Coca-Cola Korea, managing global key accounts, which include McDonald's, Walmart, Carrefour and 7-11. He and his family have moved back to Seoul and are getting settled again.

After dinner in a Latin restaurant in NY. From left to right: Rakesh Sehgal '03, Beth Heintzelman '03, Rossitsa Stoyanova '04, Leonardo Torress '03, Elaine Schulze '03 and Brian Fitzpatrick '03

Nice guy Mark Moore left HP in July, moved back to California (Menlo Park) and started a job as portfolio manager at Spectrum Equity Investors, a private equity firm in the media and telecommunications space. Sandy, Joseph, Evelyn and Mark are happy to be back in their home state. You know, together they're JEMS. Brilliant.

Miki, Lucas (6) and Miguel Hernandez have enjoyed their time in New York City. They will be relocating permanently to London in November as part of a transfer with Citigroup's private equity group (CVC International), which recently closed on a $1.6 billion fund focused on growth investments in India, greater China and emerging Europe. They recently visited Leandro Dallemule, Patrizia and their 6-month-old Angelina, as well as Wei Li, Xu and their 1-and-a-half-year old Alex. Lucas has enjoyed being the big brother to these new members of the Kellogg family (and rumor has it, he's cracked the key to LegoMan).

Adam Eisenberg has joined the Kellogg 2003 Entrepreneurial Team and started a new company in Wroclaw, Poland. Central Europe BPO provides "near-shore" call center outsourcing to the European market with a particular focus on German-speaking countries. Adam invites all of us to check out his Web site, MaxBPO.com. Way to go, Adam!

Seems like a lot has been happening in Abs Chowdhry's life in the last six months. He just got done with his wedding earlier this year, and now Anuja (his wife) and he have decided to move halfway 'round the world, from Singapore back to the U.S. He has started doing marketing with a B2B Internet-based publishing company in Washington, D.C. called Fierce Markets. Abs reports that it's a challenging and exciting new time while he and Anuja get settled into the suburban American life in Bethesda, Md. He's already had a blast meeting with a few Kellogg folks — Sud and Rajul (both 2003) in New York – and he's looking forward to getting back in touch with the others soon.

Say, now, did you know that Dean and Katja Lindo recently switched jobs? Yup — we couldn't make this stuff up. Dapper Dean now works for Bridge Associates in turnaround consulting. And Klassy Katja works for IEG in sponsorship consulting. They also bought their first apartment in Chicago (Lakeview) so it looks as if they'll be staying in the U.S. for a while. The Lindo Lovebirds held a recent '03 out-of-towner gathering at the Lindo Suites (including shiny bald twins Barry Grant and Amit Nag, as well as Brigette Wolf, Jessica Yang, and Lu Gallucci).

Category 4: All of the above (i.e., Overachievers)

class of 2003
The Class of '07 (whoah!) Big Dogs join Brian Addison, Jeremy Miller, Jim McIntyre, and Andrew Ingley (all '03, pictured in order from left to right at left end of second row) during CIM Week.

Karin Larson-Pollock wins our first Overachiever award. She got married in February 2004 to one of her good friends from college — Darren Pollock. (You guys all remember Darren from college, right? He had all those crazy sweaters.) He's a surgeon in Houston and a "wonderful man!" They've been friends for years, and they started dating in 2002. After many long-distance trips, she matched for residency in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and moved to the land of torrential rainstorms and rabid mosquitoes. Darren and Karin decided to elope during their vacation in Saint Thomas in 2004. Work-wise, she decided to add on to her MD/MBA and is finishing up a fellowship in hospital administration at The Methodist Hospital in Houston — a large academic medical center with over 900 beds at the main hospital, and three affiliate hospitals in the Houston community. It's been an excellent way to learn the operational and financial working of a large healthcare system — and definitely a change from internal medicine residency. On June 20, Karin gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Madison Ellen Pollock. At 7 pounds, 6 ounces, she's the joy of their lives!

Jan Rohde is also a proud father now. Carolina was born on April 1 (no jokes, gang), and has since then developed fantastically. She is in the 95th percentile of growth, already has two sweet little teeth, is able to say Papa and Mama (although it is more something like Papapapapa and Mamamama) and likes to wave good-bye. (Sounds like she can already do more than many of us could after the Lahima TGs.) She is a really "international" product and holds four passports (Mexican and German from Jan's side, Spanish from Patricia, and Salvadoran as she was born in El Salvador). Work for Jan at TACA International Airlines is enjoyable, and he really likes the people, specifically at the very international strategic development group. Work hours are much more manageable than at Bain, but responsibility levels have significantly increased. Managing teams is a lot of fun, and the projects offer great intellectual challenges. He is still managing to travel around quite a bit, and seeing Kellogg people around the world. This summer he was in New York, and presented Carolina to the Kellogg community there. In early summer, he had Attila Toth and his fiancee Edit Kincses visit the family in El Salvador, where they spent a great time at the beach, and in general enjoying the company. Attila is still with McKinsey and enjoying himself. Jan also saw David Nunez in Spain. Jan says he is thoroughly enjoying Kellogg World (even though it gets to El Salvador with at least a month of delay...) and he can't wait to hear more stories.

Andre Winarto finally finished his major strategy review of his business unit at Optus (it's about time, eh?) in mid-September, which resulted in some "neat" M&A work. After working crazy investment-banker-type hours for a few months, Andre is now happy to wind down for a few weeks! Helping him do this was his very own mini-me, Dean (not Lindo), who is now 7 months old. Andre would just like to proudly point out that it took months of meticulous advance planning with MS Project to ensure that Dean was the right size to be mini-me for the Optus fancy dress party. You gotta see this photo, folks.

Category 5: Just Me and my Homies

We begin with an update from Kasper Leschly. Because he's just so darned nutty, let's use his words, exactly (not to mention, we have no idea what he's talking about). "Greetings from the Middle East, where Thomas Poppe, Anouk Lee, Omar Hourani '02, Carlos Guy '02, Miguel Sotomayor '01 and the undersigned (Kasper Leschly) gathered to do a Tour de Jordan. Why? Cause Jordan rocks. It is insanely hot, and the great dance party — Distant Heat — takes place in a most unexpected venue the southern Jordanian desert, AKA Wadi Rum. It was a night to be remembered with Armin Van Buuren, 1,200 Middle Eastern party-goers and sand, sand, sand we missed ALL of you, but will be planning something soon, so stay tuned And what is going on with us? Thomas still sells expensive advice with McKinsey in Norway. Anouk controls coffee and cookies with Sara Lee down under. Miguel takes purchasing bribes with Santander in Madrid. While Carlos works at keeping the oil pipes running with Booz all over the world. Kasper has given up on expensive advice to make a difference in a drug company (Novo Nordisk, Copenhagen) and Omar has returned home to Jordan to run for president of Jordan soon using Distant Heat as his election platform! Your CPO."

From the Middle East to the Middle West, Amy DiMarzio checked in from the Michigan vs. Notre Dame football game in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Sept. 10. She, along with Julie (Sneider) Peller, Shari Gordon and Stacy Arend represented the blue and gold (and purple and white) exceptionally. Staci is also happy to announce that she left General Mills (gasp!) at the end of August for a new job. She's now a marketing manager at Lifetime Fitness for the Life Spa and Life Café businesses. Yea! Massages!

Anne (Ankle) Engelking reports: "I must have made a deal with Mephistopheles to get TWO '03 alums to come to Dallas in ONE week. Barry Grant whizzed through town just like a new car should, giving Ankle the VIP treatment during one of Ford's summer Fusion Flash Concerts promoting their new '06 Ford Fusion [starting at $17,995 – Ed.]. Who knew Collective Soul could still rock out after, like, 10 years? And then, not two days later, Attila Toth paused from McKinsey presentation preparation so he and Ankle could enjoy some tapas and conversation. I'm sure the client was none the wiser about all that sangria — it was time well spent. What a treat, and good to know that Dallas is always just one business trip away — come on out, y'all!"

Sam and Laura Pollack spent two weeks in Japan this summer. It was a great trip, and enabled them to see friends, watch Japanese pro baseball, consume great food (and sake), and generally kick back and relax. When they were in Tokyo, '03 classmates, Nori Urabe and Nori Ueno, hosted them for a lovely dinner. Nori and Nori couldn't have been more gracious hosts!

Arvin Cavartinton is back in the Notes this month. Little Orvis is finally sleeping through the night ("Hello Sleep!" sidebars Arvin) and Arvin and wife, Arlis, are finding much-needed time to work on their big charcoal project. Arvin also reports he was excited to spend a weekend in Chicago with First Couple Jeremy Miller and Mike Simonton, once again strolling the Miracle Mile, indulging in strawberry cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory, and sailing on a glass-smooth Lake Michigan. Arvin sends a big "shout out" to Dean Rogers!

Bruno Carvalho tells us that eight '03 alumni met at the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco from June 11 to 15 for Bain & Company's experienced consultant training. Present were Neil Chernoff, Joe Terino, Chris Dupre, Bruno Carvalho, Mareike Willimsky, Nevin Yuksel and Mandy Taft. Aine Denari was there too but missed the picture. After complaining about the long hours and travel, they renewed their intention to stick around for another year and weather the challenges of the transition from consultant to manager.

LAHIMA members Eduardo "Mene" Meynet, Mariano Ramos and Francisco "Pancho" Covarrubias recently spent a long weekend at a friend's bachelor party in Vilnius, Lithuania. Although none of them is yet considering marriage (except for Mene, who is dangerously approaching that stage), their desire to revive the good old Kellogg days took them to the former Soviet Union all the way from Chile, L.A. and Austin, respectively. Their next get-together will take place in Venezuela this December, where Eduardo might surprise us with some major news. LAHIMA lives!

Think that was cool? Nothing like what Emmy Berlind and a group of Kelloggians (and hangers-on) did in June when they took a wild ride down the south fork of the American River in California. Lots of fun, s'mores and guitar playing were involved. Check out that photo!

And our own Nathalie Kim was in Utah this summer for somewhat of a mini reunion with Margie Stineman, Mindy Barr, Michele Fischbach, Asheley Galloway, Daisy Hatch and Alicia Hassan-Waters. They rented a big house, cooked delicious meals and celebrated Michele's imminent wedding to Cameron Janes '02. Call it bachelorette, but there was a lot to celebrate and discuss while being together again! Nathalie reports that everyone is doing great.

Category 6: Category? I Don't Need no Stinkin' Category.

Where in the world is Clinton Kent? For those of you who have been emailing, calling, and IM-ing us, we can finally tell you. "The Clintonater" (as he insists we now call him) has finally leaked that he moved to Phoenix in June — just in time for the summer heat. Who says 116 degrees is hot? He's slowly learning that shade trumps distance in car parking, $150 is a "low" electric bill and what hell must feel like on a cold day.

Even scarier news from Marc Redman. After four years as roommates, he and Jeff Fleishman have finally broken up. The separation papers were filed in July, finalized at the end of August. Marc's also departed the consulting industry in favor of a job with less than 90 percent travel, and relocated back to Chicago on Sept. 1. He starts in October as director of sales, clinical solutions, for a new division of Siemens Medical (Siemens Molecular Imaging). Jeff, in the meantime, remains in NYC, choosing a more "family" lifestyle on the Upper East Side. Sorry it didn't work out, fellas.

Javier Rendon is excited about some big news in store for him and his girlfriend Amy. They met in Chicago while he was consulting and she was completing her master's degree as a nurse practitioner. Most recently, the two have relocated to San Francisco where they hope to establish Amy's new career, get settled themselves, and focus on planning a BIG party down the road....

Ajay Chawan is still living in Nashville, Tenn. Why Nashville, you may ask? He is still pursuing the business plan that he and some other '03 folks crafted around a technology that enables starch to function like dietary fiber. There have been some successes: the product was manufactured at a commercial plant and some customers have wanted to buy it. Now the trick is to make money at it. Ajay is hopeful that he will soon turn the corner and we're sure he will. Gimme an "A"!

And Jeff Vergamini writes, "No real news here. Kelly continues to commute back and forth from Columbus to Chicago. She has a new boyfriend in Columbus. He is pretty cool." Attagirl, Kelly!

Tindley Gilbert has been promoted to senior marketing manager at Pfizer, continuing to "fight the good fight" on the Celebrex brand. Tindley and Huw continue to love NYC and are having a great time with their now almost-1-year-old golden retriever, Hudson. She had a great time catching up with Colby Maher and Brady Countryman on a recent trip to Anaheim, Calif.

Vicki Nakata's been traveling a bit herself. She's been working on projects in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Bangkok over the last year. She says Bangkok's not the same without the Sasin exchange crew, but she's managed Bain-subsidized boondoggles to Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Burma. So she can't complain.

Our old pal Andrew Ingley writes the following: "There's a charity group in which a few of us from the Class of 2003 are involved, called Park Place Charities. Actually, Park Place was founded by Brian Addison in 1996 and is currently run by a 10-person board of directors, including four 2003 alums (Andy Bockelman, Andrew Ingley, Jim McIntyre, and Jeremy Miller) alongside Brian. Stanton Park serves as a community center and play area for residents of the Cabrini Green public assistance housing project in Chicago. Park Place Charities is dedicated to improving Stanton facilities and providing much-needed enrichment programs for the children living in Cabrini Green. This charity supports improvement efforts for a field house right in the middle of Cabrini Green, providing such things as basic cleaning supplies, facility improvements, computers and weekend programming for the kids. Last week we hosted the Big Dog section during their CIM Week charity project for a MAJOR clean up and improvement of the facility (see attached picture). If you're in the Chicago area, be on the lookout for our kickoff fundraising event in February." Nice work, guys!

David Nunez sends great action photos to us from Madrid! He and his wife went whitewater rafting in Norway this summer, in celebration of his promotion to partner in the private equity firm he joined a year ago. He adds that (according to a headhunter that told him so) he is the youngest private equity partner in the private equity industry in Spain! (Young enough to go crazy rafting and riverboarding he thought) Nice photos, David.

And what of our old pals Kyle and Michelle Peterson? Not to be outdone by Nunez, they took a serious hiking trip in the Alps. Serious, folks. The objective of this trip was to get in some high altitude (they're preparing for a high altitude hike in December). Check out that shot! Over the July 4 holiday, they traveled to Colorado and hiked the second and third highest peaks in the lower 48 states (the highest and second highest in Colorado), Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive. This was Michelle's first time actually camping — so it was a big achievement for her to sleep outside. While growing up in N.J. has taught her to navigate a shopping mall well, it certainly didn't prepare her for camping outside and eating freeze-dried food. The hiking was gorgeous but they definitely felt the altitude at the top. "Certainly makes you feel humbled about your fitness level."

And last, but oh so certainly far from least, we can't forget our regular "4Q Corner." Check out this edition's submission: "The 2003 4Q class is so busy jetting around the world that there is no time for our typical jollity and humo(u)r. I would be remiss however not to remind those of you that have been hidden in caves, or stuck down coal mines that Shail Thaker and Liz are now married. The ceremony in August was a fantastic blend of traditional Indian and high-society British with much fun had by all. People flew in from across the globe for a celebration that started on Thursday night with Indian dance lessons and culminated with great food, wine, dancing and of course table-football. Well done, Shail! Who's next? Leo?"
