Juan
Martinez and Santiago Rivera, both ’03, try a day
of adventure on the wild river in Veracruz. |
2003
Uh-oh.
It's happened. Flip forward a few pages. See it? We know,
we know. It was inevitable. There's another class after us.
Yep, it
is time, Class of 2003, to finally relinquish our position
as the final full-time class in the pages of the mighty Kellogg
World to the Class of 2004. And, indeed, it is time to
finally admit to ourselves that those little fawns we once
led into the KOA wilderness are now ravenous wolves who can
match us spreadsheet for spreadsheet in any corporate conference
room.
Spanky!
Where'd the time fly?
Let's
grab a few moments of the past and remember the B-school days
when we were having babies, getting married and, um, looking
for free stuff in our mailboxes.
And please
continue to send us news about what's happening in your lives
in between editions of Kellogg World. We hold onto
these little treasures, as well as photos that you send, and
save them for the next publication so we can share them with
our whole class. It's that easy. Why do we do it? All for
that priceless little smile we (imagine we might) see when
you read this stuff. That, and because it gets us extra bid
points this quarter to try to get into Rogers' class.
So what's
up with '03 nowadays? In this latest issue of Class Notes,
we kick it into high gear in the most fun way possible ---
makin' babies!

Jerome
Clavel ’03 cradling Elizabeth Marie, born May 24. |
|
|
|
We begin
with our beloved Midwesterner, Jerome Clavel, who
reports from Minneapolis that Elisabeth Marie Clavel was born
on May 24, weighing in at a "heavy" 8 pounds, 5 ounces. She
is doing quite well, thank
you, according
to big brother Alexandre.
Georgina
and Santiago Rivera's second child was born in June ---
a lovely little lady named Sofia. Rumor has it that that Nicolas
Careaga (son of Paola and Selman Careaga) is already
on the waiting list for potential prom dates, while Santiago
Rivera Jr. is suffering his first rejection as a Latin lover
from Viviana Ballesteros (daughter of Viviana and Ricardo
Ballesteros).
Dnyanesh
and Kanchan Patkar welcomed daughter Ruhee Patkar on
June 15.
David
Feinberg and his wife, Anne, also recently joined the
list of new Kellogg parents. Morgan Jean Feinberg was born
June 5. David reports that she burst on to the scene weighing
7 pounds, 1 ounce, and she is adorable. David is still working
for Sterling Partners in its new $200-million education real
estate fund, and he is a vice president in charge of student
housing acquisitions, development and joint ventures for the
fund.

David
Gill and his wife, Angela, welcomed a baby boy to the
world on Aug. 15. Ryan Crocker Gill , 7 pounds, 7 ounces,
is doing well in NYC, along with mom and dad.
Finally,
Valerie and Michael Hessling are delighted to announce
the birth of their son, Parker Ryan Hessling.
From makin'
babies to, um (insert joke), we take you to the Kellogg wedding
scene.
Rice and
corks flew for Ben and Maggie (Burke) Brown, who
were married in Milwaukee on May 22. Kellogg '03 was back
together again, and the new husband and wife are doing well
in San Francisco.
Janice
Farrell Jones and Dave Jones were married June 26 in Toronto.
They were thrilled to welcome Kellogg friends Dina and
Justin Silverman, Danielle Bozarth, Michael
Haberkorn and Mareike Willimsky to the Great White
North for the festivities. Janice and Dave spent the month
of July honeymooning in Thailand.
Olympics?
Nah. Ryder Cup? Bah! When it comes to a global sporting event,
nothing can compare to the '03/'04 international (Jamaico-Germo-Dano)
union of Dean Lindo and Katja Roever '04. The dreamy-eyed
couple was married on Aug. 7 in Munich, Germany, followed
by an all-night party at the unforgettable La Villa hotel
on Starnberger Lake. Friends and family from 17 countries,
including more than 20 Kelloggians representing the classes
of 2003 and 2004, joined Dean and Katja for the celebration.
From the pre-wedding reception the eve of Aug. 6 (think guys
in lederhosen, girls in dirndls and a night on the town with
the "locals" doing sweaty techno stuff), to the wedding-night
festivities (think Marley meets Nena, Dean meets German slap-dancing,
Katja meets reggae, crowd meets unending supply of local beer
and Red Bull, and our Class of '03 CPO meets his match) ---
it was quite an event.
Just a
week later our very own Kerry Mar got hitched as well.
On Aug. 15, at beautiful Golden Gate Park in San Francisco,
Kerry married long-time beau Sam Hopkins. Quite a few Kellogg
friends were in the crowd to cheer the happy couple to victory.
Congrats to Kerry and Sam.
And this
news from 1Y '03 reporter Paolo Cuomo: Pietro Brambilla's
wedding in northern Italy Sept. 4 was yet more proof that
the Italians are one step ahead of the rest of the world when
it comes to class. The incredible afternoon and long, long
night were enjoyed by an eclectic bunch of '03 1Ys and their
partners: Dina and Justin Silverman made it over from
the States, Mareike Willimsky and Bernd Heid
wandered in from Germany, Paolo Alessian and Paolo Cuomo,
and Liz and Shail Thaker flew in from London.
Hanna and Carl Von Schantz, and Florian Funke,
who have decided the United Kingdom is preferable to their
homelands (we have no idea why!), were also there. Pietro's
decision to project all 4,000 of his Kellogg photos on a wall
of the house brought back some wonderful memories of our time
in Evanston, made all the more interesting when we realized
no censorship whatsoever had been applied. Andy, what
were you doing that night in Coyote Ugly? With this many consultants
around it was inevitable that the event was over-analyzed,
but the common conclusion was "beautiful couple, magnificent
country, fantastic food and wine, and top-notch Kellogg friends."

and Dave Napier. |
Finally,
a hearty Kellogg congrats to Farnaz and Neil Pardasani,
who were married this summer as well.
When our
class wasn't having babies or getting married, it seems like
job news and/or moves were in order. Check out these interesting
little tidbits, won't you?
Jason
Kasarda has relocated with Hewlett-Packard to the Bay
Area and now lives in San Francisco. He would like to extend
a special thanks to HP forreducinghissocial lifejail sentence
in his previous Colorado location to just 14 months. The higher
cost of living and longer commute are worth every penny and
every minute.

From
left, Fabio Sisinni, Miriam Claes (visiting Chicago
from Belgium ), Mike Liu and Anne Tse (visiting from
Hong Kong ), all '03, enjoy the air show in Chicago
in August. |
Remember
our jolly, bald Aussie pal, Andre Winarto? Well, he
and his family moved back to Sydney at the end of August.
Andre is now the business strategy manager for Optus, Australia's
No. 2 telco. In August, Andre spent four weeks traveling around
the States, talking to Kellogg alumni in the telco industry
to gain insights into industry trends. Network, Andre, network!
Before going home, he spent time saying farewells to several
great Kellogg friends in Chicago. He and Michelle are happy
to be home and are now living in North Sydney, where Andre
enjoys a five-minute walk to the office every day and where
he has a great view of Sydney Harbour. He reports that he
is happy to be home, apart from being 15,000 miles from the
best friends in the world.

The
cast and crew of the Dean Lindo ’03/Katja Roever
’04 wedding in Munich, Germany, gather on the steps
of La Villa to revisit a moment in time. |
|

What
happens at Dean Lindo’s ’03 Vegas bachelor
party stays at Dean Lindo’s bachelor party —
or so the story goes. Pictured in the fine hall of the
Sahara Hotel and Casino, kneeling, from left, are class
members Attila Toth, Mariano Ramos and Esteban Delgado.
Standing, from left, Dean Lindo, Barry Grant, Gulshan
Verma, Gerry Gilligan, Eduardo Meynet, Amit Nag and Christian
Lenz (friend of the bride). |
After
being sent to Bangkok his second day back at work (his first
day being the same day he landed after a 30-hour flight from
Boston), Byron Paul jumped right into the zany work
schedule of a typical Kellogg graduate. He moved back to Malaysia
last summer and then returned to exotic Chicago in September
with his girlfriend, Charmaine, who is heading off to Kellogg
this fall. Byron is looking forward to the change in pace,
as well as the TGs and proms (we speculate).
Cheril
(Santini) von Barsewisch has become CEO of The Big Issue
in Scotland, an 11-year-old social enterprise that creates
opportunities for homeless and socially excluded people to
earn an income and participate in society by selling a national
street magazine, as well as through other initiatives. Way
to go, Cheril! If you are looking to apply your MBA skills
as a volunteer while spending your weekends exploring the
golf courses and castles of Scotland, please let her know.
Whoa.
Last June
was a big month for Patrizia and Leandro Dallemule.
First they moved from Connecticut to Milan. Then Leandro began
work as vice president of risk management in a startup of
GE Capital in Italy. Best of luck, Leandro.
Andres
Fosk recently started his business venture in the forest,
wood and paper industry in southern Chile: Forestal Millantú.
All LAHIMA I-bankers are already pitching in for his IPO in
the next five years. Don't forget your other Kellogg sisters
and brothers, Andres.
At the
end of July Elikem Kuenyehia returned to Ghana after
11 years to take up a position as head of corporate services
and legal for a newly established bank. He reports that it
is an exciting entrepreneurial opportunity, and he is grateful
to Funmi Afonja for putting him in touch with his new
employers. If business or pleasure brings any of you to Ghana,
please let Elikem know so he can ensure you get the GIM Ghana
treatment. Ian Powell, Eddie Hayden and Reid
Smith can elaborate more on this. Elikem also tells us
that the five Ghanaian alums in Accra are very excited because
they hosted the first-ever Kellogg informational session in
Ghana on Sept. 30. Kellogg's Jevelyn Bonner-Reed made the
presentation. They arranged for her to appear on a popular
television talk show and two radio shows.

Suresh
Khanna tells us that he is happily settled into life in
San Francisco. After working a year at Siebel, he has moved
on to SAP in Palo Alto. On a much more interesting front than
enterprise software, he, Anamika and Karam bought a home in
the sunny Mission District, where they continue their search
for the ultimate taqueria. Suresh also wants to add that his
head still hurts when he thinks about the 40-ounce party in
that dark, damp evil basement. He remembers it?
And, from
guest writer Attila Toth, a novella entitled Ben Mahnke
Lives Up to His Promise: "About two years ago, one foggy
autumn afternoon, Ben looked out of the Allen Center study
room windows and said, 'One day I will join Bridgespan (the
nonprofit arm of Bain) and I will make this world a better
place.' Nobody took him seriously, despite the fact that Ben
had 'nonprofit' written all over his résumé (and also his
forehead), a 760 GMAT and a laser-sharp analytical mind that
often made his teammates feel embarrassed. However, Ben did
not give up on his dream. Today is his first day on the job
at Bridgespan. We'd better watch out, because with this perseverance
this guy will really make the world a better place for us."

Neil
Pardasani ’03 and new bride Farnaz give the ’03
gang yet another reason to celebrate. Pictured, from left,
are Tony Owen, Jay Owen, Joe Levy, Greg Obenshain, Colin
Beatty, Stewart Meyer, Ian Knox, Natalie Shlafman, Vlad
Shlafman, Brian Helm, Mike Ebner, Mark Hamachek and Andy
Pollack. |
And, for
the Most Jaw-Dropping News Piece, the award this month goes
to Karen Lee. Ready for this one? And we swear we're not making
this up. Karen and hubby Andy are living in North Hollywood,
Calif. Karen is now at the UCLA Anderson School of Management
as associate director of MBA admissions. Yup. Read that one
again, '03s. As for Andy, he finished his master's in education
at UCLA and administrative credential this summer, and continues
as a band director at Royal High School in Simi Valley. Congrats
to both of them.
And finally,
we close with sundry pieces of fun from all over this planet.
Juan
Martinez continues in his official role as "beat reporter
in Mexico," and we once again thank him for all the great
LAHIMA gang updates scattered throughout our Class Notes section.
Please keep the great work coming, Juan.
Alas,
Juan had to miss a few more parties, including Dean Lindo's
bachelor party in Las Vegas and wedding in Munich. But
he did manage to spend one weekend in Veracruz with Santiago
Rivera going whitewater rafting and playing "Matrix"-style
paintball (just like KOAVeracruz and Grad Week).Next day muscular
pains showed them both that they ain't 22 anymore.

Adrianne
and Charlie Agulla hosted a 28th birthday celebration
for Gina Schaer in Atlanta. Pictured, from left, are Gina
Schaer, Joey Olivier, Brent Reid, Adrianne (Galvin) Agulla
and Charlie Agulla from the Class of 2003. |
In addition,
the "Poker and (insert intriguing Spanish word) Club" traditionoriginated
by the Latins in the Class of '02 and followed by the classes
of '03 and '04 on "Tequila Tuesdays," opened its first franchise
in Mexico City in September with the presence of Santiago
Rivera,Tomas Lange, Jorge Martinez and Juan Martinez.
Juan received comments that his apartment in Mexico City is
"waaaaay" cleaner than McManus 208, even though the neighbors
still complain about the noise (with the advantage that in
Mexico City, the police don't show up). Given all the compliments,
Juan had to admit that it was the work of Tomas;
otherwise, there would be empty Bacardi bottles and Wonderbra
ads all over the place instead of a wine cellar and paintings.
Future events will include Cuba in Eastern Week 2005. Anyone
interested?
Attila
Toth still remains enthusiastic about life in consulting.
His projects took him to many foreign countries in the Americas,
Europe and Asia, where he tried to visit as many Kelloggians
as possible (you know who you are, no need to mention names).
Also, Attila is thankful to all members of the Kellogg family
who supported him through the difficult experience of losing
his father.
Less than
a year after starting work, Tunde Omotoba was promoted.
He is now an investment officer at Smith Whiley. In addition,
the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services approved
his application (and those of his family) for permanent residency
last summer. Congratulations, Tunde.
Ajay
Chawan is still cranking away in Nashville. He's still
doing the day job/night job thing. His startup is the night
job and is evolving into a full-time deal. As a reminder,
this startup is a method to manufacture low-carb foods that
taste good. You can finally squeeze back into your thong,
Jeff Vergamini! We wish Ajay all the best in his new
venture.

Denise
Lazo ’03 and Arturo Vera ’03 drove down from
Orlando to meet with Kellogg friends in Miami. Pictured,
from left, are Denise, Patricia and Jan Rohde ’03
(visiting from Germany and flying the Kellogg colors),
Arturo, Ingrid and Rodolfo Novarini ’03 |
Denise
Lazo reports that she and Arturo always seem to
meet up with Kellogg friends in Miami (it's just such a "cosmo"
city). Although they live in Orlando, they try to make it
to Miami to see friends who are visiting for a couple of days.
That was the case when Jan Rohde and his wife, Patricia
Ojeda, stopped by while in town from Germany. At the same
time, they met up with Rodo Novarini and his wife,
Ingrid Gyldenfeldt, who live in South Beach.
Ravi Raghavapudi
reports that he and Padmaja are homeowners now and in debt
like everyone else. They bought a house in the Hyde Park neighborhood
of Chicago, close to some school called the University of
Chicago, and moved in a few weeks ago. They are still trying
to settle in and unpack all the boxes, and are very excited
that they have a bigger place for their 8-month-old to crawl
around in.

Pedro
Andrés Mejía tells us, via Juan, that he is enjoying being
marriedtoCristina, working for McKinsey & Co. and not traveling
as much. He has been spotted in the Dominican Republic and
New York due to "undisclosed" projects. Hmmmmm. Not sure what
that means, but it sounds very "undisclos-ey."
Francisco
Covarrubias decided that Texas wasn't as warm and sunny
as he expected, so heescaped for 10 days to Croatia.
Tomás
Lange celebrated his 32nd birthday and his first year
in Mexico City with a party at his apartment (you know, the
one with a full wine cellar and full bar). Apparently, being
a finance manager forAllied Domecq allows youto getwine and
liquor at really sweet prices.
And last,
but most certainly far from least, no news to report from
Clinton Kent --- except that he still longs
for the days with his pretend girlfriend, the great Nancy
Rosen. (Nancy --- please just call him. We can't get him
to stop writing to us about this.)
