2001

Hello! Just a quick note about submissions: Kellogg recently implemented discussion groups as a means of communicating with large groups, so I'll be sending reminders for Kellogg World deadlines through the Class of 2001 discussion group (the email will come from "2001 digest"). Please respond to my email address, drodriguez2001@kellogg.northwestern.edu. Feel free to send me news at any point, and I will savethe submission until the next deadline. Thanks, and I hope everyone is doing well.

'01 alumni wedding
Twenty Kellogg alums helped the Class of 2001’s Ann Rollert and Mike Biddlecom celebrate their marriage in Ann Arbor, Mich., on July 17.

Weddings: On July 17, 20 Kellogg alums made the trip to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the wedding of Ann Rollert and Mike Biddlecom. After some interesting weather (OK, it really turned out to be more than "interesting," with a brief but howling storm that started the minute the ceremony finished), all had a fantastic time. Good food, good drinks, good music and great people. Ann and Mike have recently moved from cozy New England to sunny Southern California, where they reside in San Diego. (Mike took a job transfer with Biogen Idec.) While Ann has yet to go for a dip in the Pacific (sharks!), Mike is looking for that rare long board to hold him up on the waves.

2001 alums Monisha Kaplan and Chris Lozier
Class of 2001 classmates (and soulmates!) Monisha Kaplan and Chris Lozier at their April wedding

Chris Lozier and Monisha Kaplan were married April 19, 2003, in Lewes, England, the town where Monisha was born and where Chris proposed seven months before. A handful of Kellogg alums were among the 35 guests at the wedding. Since then, Chris and Monisha have resettled in Chicago and love being back.

Christie Wong and Tom Barrett were married Aug. 7 in Kaupo, Maui. The 2001 Kellogg alums in attendance were Michelle (Bonner) Techel, Natasha Chaturvedi, Paul Celi, Ben Straley, Kendall Riding, Mandy Levenberg, Clay McDaniel, Bernard Zion and maid of honor Clara Kim. The three-day affair included one of the top 10 scenic drives in America, a hike to a 400-foot waterfall, a seaside luau, a service in a beautiful small, remote church, a poolside reception and a post-reception late-night pool party. Tom and Christie honeymooned on the Big Island and stopped on the East Coast for a few family celebrations, where they also saw Zach Taylor. They are now back in London trying to re-acclimatize to working life.

Michael Faulkender (PhD, finance '02) and Maria-Francesca Steyn were married May 1. Mike was a TA for several Finance I and II classes and taught a couple sections of Finance II while the Class of 2001 attended Kellogg. They commuted for a while after Maria graduated and now reside in St. Louis, where Mike is a finance professor at the Olin School of Business at Washington University and Maria is in strategic planning with Emerson.

Births: Patricia and Florent Carbonneau had a baby girl, Lauren, on Jan. 18. Big brother Martin is taking great care of her.

Susan and John McKnight are happy to reportthe arrival ofJohn Harman McKnight on July 5. Although Harman missed his July 4 due date, dad, in typical MMMfashion, is claiming 100-percent on-time delivery, as mom went into labor and thus "began shipping"on the Fourth. Harman was a healthy 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and measured 21 inches long. Mom and dad are very excited about the arrival of their first child. Dad is still working at Danaher and, in addition to his role as general manager for Danaher's motor factory in Tianjin, China, has recently accepted a business unit manager position. Susan left Home Shopping Network in the spring to focus on being a full-time mom.

'00 and '01 alums
Oscar Rodriguez ’00, Ivan Espinosa de los Monter ’00 and his wife, Rocio Monasterio, Guiomar Alvarez ’01, Andres Franco ’00, Carolina Castillo ’00, Pablo Urgoiti ’01, Clarissa Lourenco ’01 and her husband Roberto, and Beatriz Puente Ferraras ’00 (not pictured) gathered for an informal reunion in Madrid in June.

Benoit Vialle and his wife had a second son, Thibault, in December. Benoit is currently a business planner for Microsoft Corp.

On Sept. 2 Ari Zur and his wife, Niki, had their second child, Jake Alexander Zur. He weighed 7 pounds and was 20 inches long. He was born the day before Hurricane Frances, so he had a busy first 12 days. Although the Zur family was in the thick of the storm, everyone is safe and there was no structural damage to the house. Ari writes, "We didn't have power for more than a week, and our landscaping looks like a hurricane hit it (ha, ha)." Older sister Skyler just turned 2 and still doesn't know what to make of her baby brother, but fortunately, she hasn't asked Ari and Niki to send him back yet.

Dominic ’01 and Piper (Cutcliffe) Engels ’01 and family
Dominic ’01 and Piper (Cutcliffe) Engels ’01, Alisha and Jonathan Glaser ’01, and Tom and Trisha Maguire ’01 gathered with their kids for a beach vacation in South Carolina.

In other news, Dominic and Piper (Cutcliffe) Engels, Alisha and Jonathan Glaser, and Tom and Trisha Maguire gathered with kids in tow for a beach vacation outside Charleston, S.C. Given all the recent births and new jobs among the group, they sent along a collective update: Dominic recently left McKinsey in San Francisco to join The Gap in a brand strategy role. Piper has recently started in a consulting role, also at Gap, in its online business. She does training and organizational development. She left Siebel Systems' marketing group last year to enjoy an extended maternity leave with their son, Dylan. As Dylan begins to walk, the house is getting turned upside down, but at least sweaters are being folded really well.

Trisha left BCG Chicago last January to relocate to Raleigh, N.C., with her husband, Tom, and their new baby boy, Aidan. After an extended maternity leave, she has recently joined IBM in a marketing strategy role. She is looking forward to "turning a lot of earth" in the personal computing category.

Jonathan and Alisha welcomed their second daughter, Sophie, into the world in January. Jonathan is still enjoying his investment banking role at Wachovia Securities in Charlotte, N.C.

Classmates Debbie Curtis and Evan Goldberg successfully completed the New York City triathlon last June. Debbie participated in the triathlon through Team In Training, raising more than $3,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, thanks to many generous Kellogg friends' donations.

Some Kellogg friends from the classes of 2002 and 2001 gathered at Miguel Devoto's house in Buenos Aires to enjoy the great weather. The group included '02ers Fernando Garcia Poitevin, Marcial Rapela, Esteban Grinberg, and Cristian Letelier, Miguel Devoto '03 and Vicente Beltran.

Henry B. Nguyen was recently appointed managing general partner of IDG Ventures' Vietnam fund, a $100-million investment fund in Vietnam. IDG Ventures is a global venture capital and private equity firm affiliated with International Data Group (IDG). Patrick McGovern, founder and chairman of IDG, says, "Henry Nguyen has the technology market knowledge, the entrepreneur coaching skills and excellent relationships with key government and industry leaders in Vietnam to make him very well-qualified to be the managing general partner of IDG Ventures Vietnam."
