1987

I am writing to you the evening of Sept. 11 and hoping and praying you are all safe. If you know of any classmates who were in harm’s way today, please let me know. I send my heartfelt sympathies to any who might have been directly affected. It seems so inappropriate to be writing cheery class news at this moment. But by the time you read these words perhaps it won’t seem so out of place, and life does indeed go on.

Speaking of which, a new one (life that is) has been added to one of our classmate’s families. Rick Rosenfeld writes to say he and his wife, Meghan, had their first child on March 18. Her name is Erin Sydney Rosenfeld and like her dad, she’s feisty. Congratulations!

Michael Beck, who wondered out loud last year in this column if he was the only one from ’87 who was still with the same employer since graduation, has broken the streak. In July, Mike moved from Bristol-Myers Squibb to Novartis to be executive director of field analysis. Apparently Mike (and hopefully his wife) was bitten by the Europe bug while living in London when he worked for Bristol. He’s hoping to take advantage of Novartis’ headquarters location in Switzerland and get a Euro-based assignment again. In the meantime, he’s building (well, I doubt he’s actually building it … but you never know with Mike) a house in Flemington, N.J. Send a picture of the new house when you’re done, Mike; maybe a classmate will want to buy it when you move back to Europe.

Lee Wright sold what I think was his company (AnywhereYouGo.com) to H-P for an undisclosed sum, and headed off with his wife, Katherine, for their first trip to Asia. They visited Nobuyuki Adachi in Japan. Nobu is working for Ford, and if Lee hadn’t lost the digital picture he had of him, we’d be able to see how Nobu is doing. Your press badge is revoked, Lee. Apparently Lee saw it coming and has joined Nokia as their director of strategic partnerships for the Americas.

Heidi Noorany writes: “I look forward to seeing everyone at our reunion next year. It is hard to believe that 15 years have passed! The last few years have been very busy for me. After many years in product management at Nestle and as director of marketing at Cellular One, I started my own company, Noorany Marketing Resources, in 1997. Focusing on marketing, project management and new product development and launch, we provide marketing resources and expertise to help companies achieve their objectives. On the personal front, in 1997 I married Jeff Burg, and we have two children: Brandon, 2, and Brianna, five-and-a-half months. We moved to San Diego in 1999, and love it!”

Barb Golub '87 with sons Noah and Sam during a Fourth of July parade.

Barb (Sandy) Golub and her family moved from Atlanta, their home for the last six years, to New Jersey this summer. They, like Mike Beck, are building a house there, but Barb has probably hired someone to do it for her. I don’t think Barb’s the “power tool type.” Barb was more into cheese; that’s why she worked at Kraft for 12 years. But now she’s a child wrangler for Noah, 5, and Sam, 2. Occasionally she gets together with some classmates like Leah Goldman (in New York City) and John Baglivo (in San Francisco), who have their own marketing consulting practices. She also saw Naomi Pollack last year while on vacation in Portland, Ore. Naomi, what the heck are you doing in Portland? Windsurfing and kayaking?! Are you a changed woman or what?

Well, I have to say I enjoyed myself so much getting caught up that I forgot for a moment the horrible nature of this day. Thank you for sharing. It’s made a difference already. Hopefully the rest of you will feel so inclined as well. It’s simple; just drop me a line. ’Til next time.
