2003
You've done it! You've finally reached the Class of 2003 section of Class Notes! Feels good, hmm? Now that you've painfully waded your way through all of those "other" sections, sit back, pour yourself a frosty PBR, turn up that Sade CD (the sweetest taboo), and allow yourself to be cognitively massaged by the most indulgent Notes around.
Oh — and sorry, but no weddings this time. You'll have to check out the Class of 2009 section for that.
Quick note: As you know, not every picture will be included in the Kellogg World print edition, but they are included in the Kellogg World online edition. We apologize in advance if your photo is not printed, but we hope you'll visit Kellogg World online to see many more photos of our classmates. They've done a really nice job with the digital version — check it out!
Inbounds: Going way back on the baby front, Priti Choksi and Rachad Youssef welcomed their daughter Maya into the world on Jan. 4, 2010. Maya (1) is walking and learning to sail (well, at least she loves being on the boat). Priti is having a blast at Facebook, where she has been director of business development since May 2009.
The baby announcements continue with Pietro Brambilla, who is very pleased to announce the birth of his second son Daniel on Sept. 10 in Paris. Pietro and his family now live in Istanbul, Turkey, were Pietro works as CFO for L'Oreal (the "Because you're worth it" company). If you are in Istanbul for business or pleasure, contact Pietro! He and his family are more than happy to help you discover some true Istanbul nighttime entertainment.
Lisa Karbiner and husband Michael Boffa welcomed their first child, daughter Marcella Eloise, on Sept. 23. Baby "Ellie" was a healthy 9 pounds, 6 ounces and continues to smile and giggle her way through each and every day.
Stacy (Arend) and Todd Solow rejoined the ranks of the sleepless on Oct.14 when they welcomed their second baby Harper Elizabeth into the world. Big brother Jake (3) couldn't be more excited! Todd continues to enjoy his job at Norwest Equity Partners and they still love living in Minneapolis.
Kelly and Jeff Vergamini are excited to announce the birth of Ashley Elizabeth on Nov. 5. Weighing in at 7 pounds, 1 ounce, Ashley entered the world as a tiny, happy Vergamini.
Paige Francis tells us that things are well in Connecticut. She and David welcomed Brooke MacIntyre Flueck on Nov. 12. Their latest little addition is a perfect baby sister for big sister Elle. Paige and David are settled in Westport and enjoying the family life. Paige is still with Starwood Hotels heading up global marketing for three specialty select brands, Aloft, Element and Four Points by Sheraton.
Rob and Jennifer Stephenson were excited for the arrival of Sarah on Nov. 17. She weighed in at just under 8 pounds and 20 inches long. According to Rob, the family is delighted that she looks more like her mom and sister than her dad. The scheduled C-section was textbook and took less than one hour. Big sister Anne is positively enchanted with her sister!
Transitions: In Jan Rohde's last submission, he told us about his new job (switching from TACA to LAN), new country (moving from Panama to Chile) and new baby (Lena, his third). This time around, Jan is again switching jobs and will be working for his fourth company post-Kellogg. The latest career move should be for a bit longer, as he will be working with his father-in-law in the family business. Jan would welcome suggestions on what sort of pitfalls to avoid from anybody who has done this before . The company is in fast-growth mode, highly profitable, and should therefore be a fun challenge. It does all sorts of good things, such as training for corporations and the unemployed, environmental services, corporate social responsibility security, etc.
That also means a new country for Jan or, in reality, an old one: Spain. For him, it is a new city (No. 14!), but for his wife Patricia, it is a homecoming. She's been away since she was 17, so she has spent half her life outside her home city and is very happy to return. They will both work for the family business, therefore all value-add should stay within family boundaries, which is great! No news on the child front at this time. Jan and Patricia are very happy with the three kids they have: Carolina (5), Adrian (3) and Lena (1), who all get along very well and help them to keep going at all times. Jan and Patricia have seen a few of our classmates. Most recently, Philipp Goyeneche and the Rohdes got together to welcome Arturo Vera, who was in town for business. From time to time, Jan runs into some of fellow Kelloggians in Chile, and everybody seems to be doing great. He also saw Jose Etchegoyen on a brief business trip to Miami. They now look forward to seeing David Nuñez, his wife Elena, and their kids once they get back to Spain.
Derek Yung left LeapFrog after four great years, most recently as vice president of product strategy. He joined NexTag, the online shopping comparison company, as vice president of finance and strategy. It's a profitable, pre-IPO company that is looking to accelerate growth. This is an exciting time for the company, especially considering the type of valuations that other web companies have been getting recently. The Yungs are still living in Walnut Creek, Calif. Jill is still working as an environmental attorney at a law firm, and Casey (3) and Lily (1) are growing up fast.
In January, Mike Zechmeister was appointed treasurer for General Mills. Previously, Mike was the vice president of finance for the consumer foods sales division and was instrumental in driving change in and financial leadership for the sales division since July 2007. Prior to joining the sales division, Mike held a variety of financial leadership roles, including vice president/DFO for Pillsbury USA; director of corporate development; assistant treasurer and a number of financial operations roles across the company. Don't you wish Mike had been in YOUR FinD group?
Gulshan Verma joined Komli Media's management team as vice president and country head of ad networks (India and the Middle East) after almost five years with Yahoo! Komli is India's largest digital advertising network (and aims to be Asia's largest) and grew by 600 percent last year. They also represent Facebook sales in India (and are riding that wave). Plans for this year include opening an office in Dubai and Singapore, so Gulshan hopes to meet some old Kellogg classmates out there.
Miriam Claes moved to the Bay Area, where she will be helping a nonprofit focused on reducing stress in inner city schools. She's excited to get back in touch with old friends, alums in the area and/or involved in the education sector.
And all the other stuff: On the travel front, Edward Sim took his kids Alex and Emma to Singapore for Christmas. It was the sixth trip for Alex to Singapore, but the first for Emma. She was totally excited to see the country and meet all the relatives from great grandma to aunts to cousins she had not personally met before. Needless to say, the food was fantastic. They had their fair share of the famous chili crab, delicious dim sum and local dishes such as chicken satay (the Singapore version of kebabs). Edward definitely wishes they had more time to spend there, considering the fact that it took them 36 hours to get there. They practically circled the globe, starting from Charlotte, and then on to Houston, then Moscow and finally Singapore. Good thing they spent most of the journey on Singapore Airlines, so the kids stayed entertained.
Tindley Whipple Gilbert and her family continued to take advantage of living in Dubai by attending a friend's wedding in Egypt in early January. They fell in love with the country, after spending two days in Cairo and three days in Sharm el Sheikh, with the highlight being the camel ride around the Pyramids and the Sphinx. They have all of their old and new friends in Egypt and throughout the region in their thoughts as the Middle East continues to go through a transition.
After four years of living in Perth, Australia, Andre Winarto finally bought a house near the Swan River. With Michelle and his two boys Owen and Dean, Andre is now enjoying and learning (slowly) how to be a handyman. Andre was promoted in July and look after the operational asset maintenance and construction of the Western Australian electricity distribution network. A highlight so far was working with his teams to restore the network within a few days after a freak storm took out over 170,000 customers across the state in a matter of hours.
Joey Olivier writes that he and his wife Sherry are working to coordinate support for 50 orphans under the care of Malayaka House (malayakahouse.com) in Uganda. The plan is to create a safe place for the kids, give them the fundamentals of nutrition, medical care and education, and teach the older children responsibility, self-reliance, and productive vocational skills. In the coming months they will be working to recruit sponsors for individual children or for the orphanage as a whole. Please contact Joey (jolivier2003@kellogg.northwestern.edu) if you want to know more, or if you want to join them on a future trip to meet the kids. Congratulations on your amazing work, Joey!
Andrea Paiz reports that she's enjoying life in Guatemala, where she's currently running three franchises and serving as co-owner of Claire's Central America.
Do you stay up at night watching HGTV? It's OK to admit you like House Hunters. If you watched the show in January about House Hunters in Jerusalem, then you saw Joanna Shebson assisting her friend Hayley in choosing a house to buy. It's Joanna's second time appearing on the show, but her first with a speaking part. Her husband Jonathan, the realtor in Jerusalem, convinced her to do it. So which house did she choose? Google "House Hunters International Jerusalem" to find out.
Mike Simonton writes in from Chicago that he, Jim McIntyre and Tom Brown participated in the seventh annual Chicago Alumni Golf Outing last fall. While not exactly a threesome that fantasies are made of, it was still quite a competitive squad ... especially if the competition was for most beers purchased/consumed by 9 a.m.; most lost golf balls (Simonton); most times best drive was used from one individual (McIntyre 14); most real estate deals closed from the course (Tom and Blackberry); most unfunny jokes repeated 5-10 times (Simonton) and last group to arrive and last to depart. While "foursome" isn't nearly as funny to repeat 5-10 times as "threesome," they are looking to fill that fourth spot next year for anyone in Chicago that's interested.
