Shawn Coyne and his brother Kevin Coyne, both former McKinsey consultants, have co-authored a major new book on innovation, published by HarperCollins on March 1. Brainsteering: A Better Approach To Breakthrough Ideas (brainsteering.com) lays out a comprehensive approach for generating and evaluating ideas of all kinds, whether working alone on a one-time problem or turning an entire organization into an ongoing "idea factory." The key, say the Coyne brothers, is to take all the creative energy that people normally put into traditional ideation techniques like brainstorming and "steer" that energy in a more productive direction by better reflecting the way human beings actually think and work in creative problem-solving situations. By introducing just the right amount of structure into the process, and asking just the right questions, the brainsteering approach has helped Fortune 500 companies, small nonprofits, and individuals alike to generate ideas they previously could never have imagined. Brainsteering has received rave reviews, including being named as one of CIO Insight Magazine's "11 Best Business Books for 2011" and being selected as the featured business book in the March issue of Inc. magazine. Kellogg marketing legend Phil Kotler has called the brainsteering approach "a fresh methodology for creating, analyzing, evaluating and launching new ideas." The book is available in stores and via all major online booksellers.
