Once
again, we received a lot of exciting news to share. Thanks
to all contributors! Two common themes were clear: 1.) There
are a lot of people coming to Reunion who are excited to catch
up with everyone and 2.) No one can believe it has been five
years! In case you don't get e-mail, snail mail or phone calls
and had no idea that Reunion is coming up, our five-year Reunion
is in May! Find out more on the Kellogg Web site. Now, news
to keep you current until Reunion:
Last
issue's riveting feature on "same employer since graduation"
inspired a few more classmates to share their longevity tales
of bliss.
Sam
Levine writes: "I have been with Bridgespan since
graduation and enjoy it tremendously. I just got promoted
to manager in December, which is very exciting and gratifying.
The work is enjoyable and rewarding, with many of the benefits
of consulting (really smart colleagues, new challenges all
the time, using your brain to solve complex problems) and
a whole bunch of additional perks (the knowledge that your
work is contributing to solving society's most important problems,
and a better work/life balance!). I'll put out a call to fellow
grads who are disenchanted with for-profit consulting to come
to the light."
Another
"still at the same company" news bit comes from
Rob Persaud: "I'm still at PepsiCo, now the brand
manager for Aunt Jemima and Quaker Regional Grains."
Things are far from the same at home, as he and wife Alison
welcomed daughter Harlowe Frances into the world on Dec. 1.
She weighed a healthy 8 pounds, 2 ounces, measured 21 inches,
and had more hair than the medical community thought possible
(though thankfully only on her head). All three Persauds are
doing well.
We
aren't sure if this counts as a baby boom, but there are quite
a few more joyous births to announce. Teresa (Chan) Moye
writes: "We were delighted to welcome our baby daughter,
Kendall Riley Moye, on May 27. She has been such a joy, and
we are very happy to be near family (we moved back to San
Francisco two years ago)."
Tobi
Laczkowski and his wife, Tiffany, welcomed their second
son, Charles Kent, on June 4. Charlie came 10 weeks early,
weighing in at 3 pounds, 9 ounces. He's home and is healthy
and happy. Big brother Grant is very proud. Tobi is still
with ZS Associates and was promoted to manager in December.
Laura
and Jim Nollsch are in Denver with "not a whole
lot to report other than a baby daughter." Janey Elizabeth
Nollsch was born July 31. This was a big birth date, as Andy
and Liz Pfau are happy to announce that their daughter,
Hannah Michelle Pfau, was born on the same day!
Fran
and Wallace Saunders welcomed their second child as
well. Wallace "Marshall" Saunders Jr. was born on
Sept. 27 and joins big sister Ann Corbett.
On
Oct. 5, Jill Carter and husband Justen welcomed their
first child, son Liam David Carter. Mom, dad, and baby are
doing well, especially now that sleep has returned to the
Carter household.
Erica
'01 and Ian Norton moved from Chicago to Dallas a little
more than a year ago. Erica is still working with The Cambridge
Group, and Ian is now working for Cadbury Schweppes Americas
Beverages, managing the 7UP brand. Ian writes: "Since
both Erica and I are from Texas, it has been really great
to be home and closer to our families. On a more exciting
note, we welcomed a baby boy named Aidan Michael Norton into
the world on Oct. 19. Both mom and dad are adjusting to parenthood
and the lack of sleep (mom has definitely been hit the hardest).
Unfortunately, a baby-care class was not offered at Kellogg,
so we are learning as we go."
Christian
Letelier announces the arrival of No. 4: Santiago Letelier,
who was born Nov. 13. Christian shares that "life has
become more revolutionized, but we are very happy."
Brian
and Michele Martin, along with daughter Ella, are
proud to announce the arrival of Andrew James Martin on Oct.
30. He weighed in at a healthy 7 pounds, 10 ounces, and already
weighed more than 12 pounds by January! Michele sums up their
welcomed family addition with the following: "He's our
little prince and Ella takes her role as big sister very seriously!"
Ella
Martin isn't the only Ella who loves being a big sister. Catherine
Barron writes of Dani and her Ella (2) and Jessica (6
months): "They are wonderful and are so much fun."
The Barrons moved back to the 'burbs of Chicago in 2004 after
about two years in Pittsburgh. Catherine is working for Strategic
Leverage Consultants, a small firm in Evanston. They are launching
Tangram, a Web-based management tool that makes teams more
effective.
Congrats
to all these expanding families! Here are some more exciting
changes:
Jeff
Bougher and family
— Susan, Justin and Alex — have moved to China.
They're living in Suzhou and Jeff is working in Wuxi as director
of operations for Timken. Suzhou is only an hour drive from
Shanghai. Jeff notes: "I know with the variety of jobs
my classmates have, many of you will be making it to China
over the next three years. So if anyone makes it here, please
let me know. We can get together either there or here (I'll
gladly arrange logistics)." Jeff also shared his perspective
on their move: "The transition has been surprisingly
easy. The Chinese are wonderfully friendly and go out of their
way to help you if you use just a bit of Mandarin (we're all
learning it slowly, but steadily)."
In
early 2006, Janet Kroes left her role as senior associate
at Booz Allen Hamilton to take on a new challenge as senior
manager of corporate strategy at TNT N.V., a publicly listed
company with revenues of more than ¤10 billion that provides
mail and express services.
Stuart
Brown shares news of a significant career and weather
change: "In May of this year I left Target (and the 10
months of winter in Minneapolis) to return to Atlanta (and
its two days of winter) to accept a job with Buckhead Church
as a small groups director. My responsibilities include recruiting,
developing and training the leaders in our church."
Alyson
Gampel shares the exciting news that she married Shawn
Saraga on Aug. 27. They had a small, outdoor, casual wedding
by the lake in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada (two hours from
Toronto), with 120 of their closest friends and family. She
also shares her latest professional news: "I just couldn't
get enough of the MBA world, so I now direct MBA employment
at the Career Development Centre of the Schulich School of
Business in Toronto (Schulich is the Kellogg School's Canadian
partner for the Executive MBA program). I help MBAs figure
out their career objectives and chart courses to achieve these
goals. I also work with employers interested in recruiting
Schulich MBAs (and undergrad business students and alumni)
for internships and full-time opportunities."
Lori
(Siegel) '03 and Chip Craw married in May 2005 in St.
Louis, Mo. The wedding was gorgeous and attended by Michelle
Surhie, Michele Lee, Jay and Megan Marine,
and Eric Autio. They honeymooned in Belize at two resorts
owned by Francis Ford Coppola. The year prior, they bought
a 1916 Craftsman house in Seattle and made their first addition
to the family — their dog Ozzie: "He's a 75-pound
mutt (part lab, part Rhodesian ridgeback, part sharpei)."
Chip
left Amazon in September to join technology startup DS-IQ,
which, Chip writes, "has been great. My entrepreneurial
spirit is happy and the company is set up for great things.
It's got a ton of potential, and I've definitely gotten in
on the ground floor. The CEO is a Kellogg guy and the atmosphere
here is great."
Ed
and Ashley Stubbins are loving life in the O.C.
They've seen a lot of '02 alums over the last few months.
There is a strong group of alums in Orange County that get
together as often as possible, including Geoffrey Lasry,
Donna Riley and husband Kevin Bebb, and T.J. Karl.
Ashley
and Ed spent Labor Day weekend in New Hampshire/Vermont at
Linsey Simpson's wedding along with several other '02
alums. During a vacation in Thailand and Cambodia last November,
they visited Kellogg alums including Saiko and Tatsu Suzuki
and Dai Ishida on a one-night layover in Tokyo. While
in Thailand, they reconnected with classmates Darika Soponawat
and Pip (Wattanasiritham) Kulnides over a wonderful
Thai lunch.
Pip
has had a flood of visitors as Maya and Karthik Vasudevan
also visited Pip and husband Nat in Bangkok! They got to meet
the Kulnides' lovely newborn Praan. Since Karthik's work takes
him on the road quite a bit ("I hit 22 states in the
first year and a half"), he has had the opportunity to
catch up with a number of our fellow Kelloggians. Here's Karthik's
recap of this whirlwind of exciting mini-reunions beyond Bangkok:
"In 2007, I have seen Mike and Amanda Hansen in
Houston; grabbed a drink with New Yorkers Eddie Wu
and Andy Thung; and shared a drink with Dean Jacobs
in the Narita Airport Red Carpet Lounge in Tokyo. In the Bay
Area, Corinne Foo-Atkins '03, Steve Atkins '03, Barry Grant
'03 and I recently hiked along herds of elk in Point Reyes.
Steve Pockross and I lightened our pockets of $50 each
on 25-cent antes in a poker game that he hosted. Maya and
I look forward to seeing Don Angspatt, Megan and Charlie
Wyman, and other Bay Area alums in the near future."
Karthik and Maya are enjoying living in San Francisco, where
Karthik continues to co-lead Hilco Enterprise Valuation Services,
a firm providing enterprise and intangible asset valuations
for financing and accounting purposes.
Janey
Dean married Michael McWhorter on May 20 in Milwaukee.
Kellogg friends traveled from California, Minnesota and Illinois
to help celebrate. Attendees included Ashley Martorana,
Stephanie Gladney, Vanessa Zielke, Katherine
Gregory, Courtney (Turner) Mohr, Dorothee (Gutierrez)
Fisher, Kristina (Lutter) Bornhoeft and David Bornhoeft
'03. The Kellogg ladies hit the dance floor with moves reminiscent
of Kellogg Cheesy Wine parties. On their honeymoon in Savusavu,
Fiji, at a tiny shack-style airport with a grass landing strip,
Janey and Mike ran into two other Kellogg alumni — Brian
and Daisy (Hatch) Gauk (both '03) — who also happened
to be on their honeymoon! That random Kellogg run-in definitely
takes the wedding cake. Janey and Mike reside in San Francisco.
Johnette
Kao married Tim Johnson on Nov. 4 in Providence, R.I.,
with a beautiful reception at the Aldrich Mansion situated
on the oceanfront of Narragansett Bay. Classmates in attendance
included: Catherine Vaughn (maid of honor), Mike
Doheny, Ross Collins, Faith Son, Michelle
Awuku, Eric Autio, David Baker, Dave
Burke, Dave Walker, Evan Houtrides, Michael
Costanzo, Nancy Hoch, Will Whitman, Teresa
Lee and Devin Gallagher. Johnette met Tim at Johnson
& Johnson, where she has been working since graduation,
first in strategic marketing and now in brand management for
a newly launched drug. She has enjoyed her experience with
the company immensely, so much so that she's now Johnette
Johnson of Johnson & Johnson (how's that for alliteration?).
Johnette has this request for classmates: "If you're
ever in New Jersey, please come and visit!"
Doug
Monro writes: "My wife, Kim, gave birth to our first
baby, Thomas Robert Monro, on Dec. 20. Mum and dad are doting,
but very sleep deprived. Also keeping me busy is a new job
as the general manager of Gumtree.com (the United Kingdom's
equivalent of craigslist, and part of eBay). All those tech,
entrepreneurship and leadership classes need to start paying
off now."
We
received exciting news from Linsey Simpson. She writes: "I
married Lon Gallagher on Sept. 2 in my hometown of Norwich,
Vt. Classmates who made the journey to Vermont to celebrate
with us included Vanessa Zielke, Katherine Gregory,
Mike and Amanda Hansen, Ashley and Ed Stubbins, Alison
and Rob Persaud, Brian and Mary Anne (McConnel) Ericson,
Dana and Erica (Post) Rabb, Marcus Wunderlich
and Stephanie (Gallo) Tyler '99. After nearly four years in
California, I left my marketing manager position with the
E. & J. Gallo Winery last spring to work for my family's
real estate development business back on the East Coast. We
are in the process of opening an office in southwest Florida
that will offer services similar to those of the headquarters
offices in New England. Lon and I are now living in Naples,
Fla., and are very much enjoying the 'winter' weather and
proximity to the beach."
Brian
Lyke married Martha
McKeon on May 28 at Lake Lawn Resort in Delevan, Wis. Jason
Tennenbaum was his
best man. Brian and Martha took a delayed two-week honeymoon
in Costa Rica in December. He writes: "My wife is getting
her master's degree in biology (thesis on reproductive patterns
in African lions), so we spend most of the vacation in the
rainforest enjoying the wildlife." Brian is currently
a brand manager for World Kitchen (Pyrex) and is living in
Chicago.
We
would like to echo the sentiments from so many of our contributors:
We look forward to seeing everyone at Reunion! We can't believe
it has been five years! |
