Professor Haskel Benishay retires

After a distinguished 38-year career at the Kellogg School, Haskel Benishay, professor of managerial economics, retired in February.

Benishay joined Kellogg in 1967 and played an important role in the formation of the Managerial Economics and Decision Sciences Department (MEDS), which was launched in 1968. The MEDS department grew into what Dean Emeritus Donald P. Jacobs called "an intellectual hothouse, where bright theorists can indulge their creativity" and pursue cutting-edge research.

"Haskel's research has always been focused on understanding the real world," said Tim Feddersen, chair of the MEDS department and the Wendell Hobbs Professor of MEDS. Benishay brought this knowledge to a "much wider audience," Feddersen said, through a long-running column in the Pioneer Press and in many TV, radio and print interviews.

Benishay said being "both a conservative and a liberal" is one of his main accomplishments. He said he tries to bring that sense of balance to his personal Web site, where one can read his many movie reviews as well as articles on economics and health.
