Kellogg alums at wedding
A January wedding, complete with many Kellogg School well-wishers, was on order for Erica Fleischmann '01 and Ian Norton '02.

2001

Class of 2001: Thank you all for an amazing number of submissions this month! Below you’ll find news of births, weddings, job changes, personal accomplishments and informal reunions; however, you will also find a memorial to a fellow classmate who recently passed away and reminded us all how dear life is and how much we should treasure all of the good times. I wish you all the best for a happy and healthy 2004!

Birth Announcements: Marcus Chugh is proud to announce a new addition to his family. Baby Adam joined the Chugh family Dec. 30. He weighed in at 7 pounds, 12 ounces, and most importantly, they got him in just before the end of the tax year. Big sister Olivia (now 2!) has been “as sweet as you can imagine,” Marcus says. “Eva really has her hands full now!”

Kellogg alums
A new variety of Saturday night, as the Engels and the Higgins share a 'quiet' dinner together in San Francisco. Both couples are 2001 grads.

Piper (Cutcliffe) and Dominic Engels send their greetings from the Bay Area and want to share news of Kellogg friendships thriving as families expand. Dominic and Piper recently celebrated the birth of their son, Dylan Charles, on Aug. 3. Dylan spends a lot of time socializing with other Kellogg ‘01 classmates and their progeny, including Kristin (Tegtmeier) and Doug Higgins, and their daughter Lauren.

Alisha, Leah and Jonathan Glaser are excited to announce the arrival of Sophie Madeline Glaser on Jan. 6. Alisha and baby are doing great, and Leah is thrilled with her new playmate-in-training.

Temi and Evan Levy welcomed their first baby, Leanna Rose, on Dec. 1. Annie weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces. Everyone is happy and healthy!

Michele Marx is thrilled to announce the birth of her son! Quintin Scott Marx II was born Dec. 19, weighing 6 pounds, 15 ounces. Their daughter, Kelsey, who just turned 2, loves to help take care of her new baby brother. Everyone is doing great!

Thomas Otis and his wife Lee joyfully (and belatedly) announce the birth of their daughter, Evelyn Grace, on Nov. 21. Evelyn has recently moved with her parents from Atlanta to Columbia, S.C., where her dad is a financial consultant with Smith Barney.

Jennifer Stansbury and husband Chris Strunk are thrilled to announce the birth of their daughter, Shannon Emily, on Dec. 30. She is a mellow and easy-going baby and a joy to her parents!

Kellogg alums at wedding
Kellogg School classmates flocked to the wedding of Renee Thibeault and Scott Barkley, both 2001.

Marriages: Renee (Thibeault) and Scott Barkley were married June 14 at

St. Cecelia’s Church in Boston. The reception, which was held at the Gamble Mansion in the Back Bay, drew several Kellogg folks, including Susan Donohoe, Christine Wu, Denise Fogus Gibson, Kim Sladkin Digilio, Tricia Hough, Martina Sangin, Steven Altschul, Mark Gally, Matt Gibson, and Lucien Foster. Scott and Renee are now living in San Francisco, where Scott is at Siebel Systems and Renee is at Williams Sonoma, working with a fellow MMM, Matt Dober.

Renee also passed along a few updates from friends who were at their wedding ... Denise (Fogus) and Matt Gibson welcomed a healthy baby boy named Samuel into the world earlier this year. Tricia Hough has moved back to Toronto to take a position with Canadian Tire. She is very excited to be back in the homeland! And lastly, Lucien Foster recently left San Francisco to move back to New York.

Kellogg friends celebrate the wedding of Jason Moss and Debbie Rebell, both '01, in beautiful Miami, Fla.

Markus Binkert married Susanne in Zurich on Sept. 20. Among the guests were also a couple of cash cows: Abbott Lawrence, Eric Briggle, Steve Oblak, Tanya Tarar and Jon Gregg. Everyone partied until very late ... in true Kellogg style.

Congratulations to Ian Norton ‘02 and Erica Fleischmann, who were married Jan. 10 in Dallas. They had Kellogg alums spanning four years at the wedding. They included Deborah (Rebell) and Jason Moss, Ann Rollert, Michael Biddlecom, Paige Herren, Courtney Hendin, Kelly Cornelis, Jennifer Cuccaro, Corey Jacobson, Andy Jacobson ‘00, Emily Ford, Andy Ford ‘00, Chris Freeburg, Frank Fehrenbach, Dan Grace ‘02, Katie Arnold ‘02, Evan Norton ‘02, Gary Raucher ‘02, Cameron Janes ‘02, Jody Blencowe ‘02, Carrie Palmer ‘02, Dan Levine ‘02 and Michele Fischbach ‘03. Debbie, Courtney, Paige, Ann, Dan Grace, Gary, Jody and Cameron were all part of the wedding party. Ian and Erica honeymooned in Nevis, which they say was great!

Teaque Lenahan and Amy Stroud were married Sept. 13 in a little white church in Door County, Wis. Many Kelloggians and their significant others were in attendance including: Stephen Moon, Jason Moss and Debbie (Rebell) Moss, Gretchen Hall and Peter Solomon ‘00, Toni and Chris Millner, Robyn and Brad Paris, Shaun Gravistin, Dan Kang, Randy and Katie White, Laurie Burkland ‘00, Rob McIntosh and Suzanne MacDonald, Sara and Jeff Ferris, Sally Burns and Shane Smith, James Lange, and Stephanie (Blackburn) ‘02 and Tim Freeth. Stephen and Jason contributed to the weekend, emceeing with poems and preparing speeches during the ceremony. Three days of rain dampened no one’s spirits, and everyone danced at the Arts School reception and enjoyed the peninsula’s fall culture.

Stephanie Ritchie married Justin Kennedy on Oct. 25 at Timberline Lodge on top of Mt. Hood (11,000 feet) in Oregon. Stephanie and Justin met their first year at Kellogg on their KOA (yet another testament to the bonding power of these trips). Kellogg friends present included Andrew Malkin and Ellery Malkin ‘02, Elizabeth (Likens) and Chris Lane, and Jessica Drislane. Stephanie and Justin recently moved from Boston to Seattle, where Justin is working for EMC Corp. and Stephanie is working in the real estate field.

Amy Malisuwan and Mike Chen were married in Bangkok on Dec. 20. Kellogg alumni in attendance were Margaret Quan and Jennifer Wang. Amy and Mike will be residing in the Bay Area.

Dan McCarthy wanted to let Kellogg World know he recently was married to Erin Kelley (now McCarthy!). The ceremony took place Oct. 18 in Dana Point, Calif. Several Kellogg friends helped them celebrate, including Chris Freeburg, Steve Sherman, Mike Biddlecom, Ann Rollert, Mike Mclaughlin, Brad Turner and Brent Puff.

Jason Moss and Debbie Rebell were married Nov. 8 at the Loews Hotel in Miami Beach, Fla. The festivities began Friday evening with cocktails, Caribbean cuisine and an endless barrage of toasts and roasts, including a tribute to Jason’s “jorts” (jean shorts) and a quiz on Debbie’s knowledge of “The Godfather.” Guests spent Saturday lounging by the pool and wondering why they don’t live in this climate all year. In the evening, the gorgeous wedding ceremony was followed by Debbie and Jason’s swing-dancing entrance to “Zoot Suit Riot,” a surprise rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by Kellogg alums Gretchen Hall, Steve Sherman and Kelly Cornelis, and enough food, dance, Jewish chair-raising, and loving cheer to leave everyone with permanent smiles. Other Kellogg alumni attending the wedding included Erica (Fleischmann) and Ian Norton ‘02, Courtney Hendin, Ann Rollert and Mike Biddlecom, Rob McIntosh, Jen Cuccaro, Teaque Lenahan, Nick Cullen, Marcy Carlin, Paige Herren, Sally Burns, Jeffere Ferris, Chris Freeburg, Peter Solomon ‘00, Gretchen (Eschbacher) Koch, Clara Kim, Debbie Curtis, Zach and Barbara Taylor, Danika (Rodriguez) and Nate Harrison, Emily (Hazlett) and Andy Ford ‘02, Brad Turner, Chris Millner, Shari Friedman, John Resnick ‘02, Chris Tomseth ‘98, and Dan Spector ‘97. The celebration was also special for providing this particular Kellogg contingent with an amazing and lasting memory of Stephen Moon, one of Jason’s groomsmen, who tragically died less than two months later on Dec. 26.

Additional news: George and Elly Andriopoulou left Boston in September and returned to their hometown of Athens, Greece. Elly writes: “I took a couple months off to get settled here, and have recently started working for Citibank in its retail banking group. Our new contact info is: 21 Gravias St., GR 15342 Aghia Paraskevi, Greece. If anyone is coming over for the 2004 games or a vacation, let me know.”

With roommate Damian Yu leaving New Jersey to go back to his Canadian roots, Bendee Anzures decided to follow suit and moved back to California to work at Intuit (though she didn’t stray too far on the roommate situation ─ from D Yu ‘01 to K Vu ‘00)! She would like to thank all the Jerz/NY peeps for coming out to either the “Bye to Boken” or “Going Back to Cali” party, and is willing to carry on social rep responsibilities on the Left Coast if desired.

Kellogg alums and families
The Chang and Casillas families spent a wonderful weekend together in the Twin Cities. From left, top row, Julio Casillas '01, William Chang '01. Middle row, Lesley Casillas, Margarita Hu de Chang. Bottom row, Sofia Casillas and Nicki Chang

William Chang and his family visited Julio Casillas’ family in the Twin Cities over Thanksgiving. The Chang and Casillas families spent the weekend touring the sites.

Marcos Lutz left ULTRAPAR (Petrochemicals) in September and joined CSN (Steel) as executive director. He is still living in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Natsuko Miura wrote that Professor Mohanbir Sawhney visited IBM Business Consulting Services in Tokyo on Nov. 7. He gave the group a one-day seminar, sharing his insights and the latest business trends in CRM strategy, e-business transformation, and the telecom carriers.

John McKnight caught up with some fellow MMMers at a Northwestern football game last fall. Alums in attendance included Jason Nordin, Casy Logan, Teri Pacheco, Dave Barter, Jeri Richards Ward, Travis Vigil, Ryan McKinney and Alyssa Kennedy.

Motivated by Robb Hoenick’s ultra-human quest to run every marathon in the galaxy (see past issues of Kellogg World), Kelloggians rallied in full force to run last year’s Long Beach City Marathon in the treacherous and inhospitable weather of Southern California. The all-star roster included Class of 2001 elite runners Bridget McVerry, Juan Jose Orellana, Brad and Robyn Paris and Joanne Wong. The class of 2002 was represented by David “The Flash” Wolbert, who ran without a number and is under investigation for claiming to finish in just 1:21:08. Ousman Jobe ‘03, who chose not to run in order to be rested for his soccer tryouts with the Real Madrid Club, provided significant moral support through his bantering from the sidelines. Alums ran the race to assist JJ in raising money for his gubernatorial bid in the California recall election. However, he removed himself from the election after being advised that organizing LAHIMA parties was insufficient political experience.

Kellogg alum Stephen Moon 1972-2003
In memory of Stephen J. Moon '01, 1972-2003

Memorial: It is with great sadness that I share the passing of a dear classmate, Stephen Moon, on Dec. 26. “Smoon,” as he was known by many friends at Kellogg, was many things to many people: a loving son and brother, a dedicated student, a caring and witty friend, a passionate rugby player, a successful businessman and a person respected for his integrity and genuine concern for others. Stephen was living in Atlanta near his parents and four sisters, and died suddenly from a brain aneurism at the age of 31. Services were held in Atlanta on Dec. 28, with a sizable Kellogg group in attendance.

He will be greatly missed by many family and friends, and as one friend remembers: “I had the pleasure of being on nine out of 12 teams with Stephen first year. No one could have asked for a smarter, funnier, more compassionate or creative teammate. In school, Smoon effortlessly came up with titles to teams like the ‘High Fives,’ and to papers such as ‘Barillas in the Mist’ and ‘Data Mining: Ore You Ready?’ Outside of school, he was a leader, a prankster, a great listener. His outstanding friendship and love for life were very much a part of his everyday life, and I miss him dearly.”

Family and friends have expressed a tremendous outpouring of sympathy for this person about whom they cared deeply. The depth of his friendship is evident in the rapid creation by friends and family of a nonprofit foundation in Stephen’s name. True to Stephen’s passions, the foundation is chartered with promoting educational achievement through scholarships, cultivating youth-centered sports programs that encourage healthy living, and advancing the Korean-American community’s desires to foster good relations through promoting the needs of others.

Tax-deductible donations may be made to the Stephen J. Moon Foundation, c/o North Georgia Community Foundation, 615F Oak Street, Suite 1300, Gainesville, GA 30503. Teaque Lenahan, tlenahan2001@kellogg.northwestern.edu, is the Kellogg contact for the foundation, and would be happy to answer any questions.
