When a Health Economist Becomes a Cancer Patient

In February 2023, I noticed blood in my urine. After checking my symptoms online, I optimistically concluded that this hematuria, as it’s known, was due to vigorous exercise irritating my big prostate. I had an upcoming prostate exam, so I didn’t immediately tell my urologist. By April, I learned that I had badly misdiagnosed the problem. This wasn’t some benign irritation. It was bladder cancer.
