Course Assignments
For a complete list of course assignments, see your packet. The links below lead you to additional materials which you will need to complete the course assignments.
- Homework and Supplementary Exercises.
- Oil drilling simulation [SEE CANVAS]. Read the full instructions in your packet or on the web here before clicking on this link. Seriously.
- Extra Assignments Most lecture outlines contain extra problems at the end. They also contain answers. These are additional assignments that are not at the end of your lecture notes. The extra assignments give you a chance to work through the concepts from class, but with different examples. In some cases, I make one assumption in class and a different assumption in the supplementary exercise. This is a good way to learn what the effect of different assumptions is. If I develop additional exercises during the term, I will post them here.
- Quiz
- Extra Quiz 1: Bayes Theorem Videos [Khan Academy]. If you would like to review the logic of Bayes Theorem before completing Extra Quiz 1, I recommend the following videos: Probability 7 and Probability 8 contain the relevant material on Bayes Theorem. They show the intuition and mechanics of Bayes Theorem. Bayes Theorem is how you start with an initial probability estimate (guess) and then, given the data you observe, you update your probability estimate. Click here for a more complete explanation and how you can use the concepts to help you complete with Quiz 3. The concepts will also help you in several other places in class and life. Probability 7 and Probability 8 build on Probability 6, but I don’t think you need to watch it, especially if you have read my description of the environment. One feature I like in the way the material is presented in Probability 6 is the use of trees to describe the information. I find that decisions trees are very useful tools for analyzing and explaining real options valuation.
- Case Assignments. Case questions are in the packet on Canvas. The exhibits for the most cases are available in Excel format on Canvas (and Stata format for Exhibit 3 of the General Motors case). The required submission for each case varies. The details of what must be submitted are listed on the syllabus. The case assignments are group assignments with the exception of the first case which must be submitted individually. Case memos must be submitted through Canvas prior to the beginning of class. Pre-submission questions (due the day before we discuss the case in class) will be submitted through ForClass. You can access ForClass through Canvas.
