Business leader McGraw was renowned for his 'commitment to the environment and the business world'

7/30/2010 - In honor of business pioneer and conservationist Max McGraw, Kellogg professor Bard Harstad has been named to the Max McGraw Chair in Management and the Environment.

Harstad has been a member of the Kellogg faculty since 2004. His research focuses on international climate-change negotiations and agreements.

“This chair recognizes Max McGraw’s commitment to the environment and the business world,” said McGraw Foundation board member Bill Mauritz ’59. “Bard’s research will position Kellogg as a leader in the forefront of research on the implications of environmental issues in management.”

A generous supporter of Kellogg for more than 40 years, the McGraw Foundation has helped fund many programs at the school, including the Sustainability Lab, a Social Enterprise Program case competition and a sustainability roundtable event. The foundation’s namesake, Max McGraw, created two of the country's largest and most successful corporations, the McGraw-Edison Company and Centel Corporation. McGraw also had a strong interest in the conservation of natural resources and preservation of the environment.

Harstad said he was humbled to be named to the chair. “The honor will certainly inspire my continued research on environmental economics,” he said.
