A handful of EMP-66ers met up in Washington D.C., for our fourth annual reunion. The local D.C. crew shined, with special kudos to Roopak Manchanda and Srinivas Potluri for organizing and Martha Nowak for all of the activity ideas. We didn’t get a full report of what actually happened in D.C., but rumors are someone with the initials DM did some belly dancing. We look forward to seeing more of our classmates at the five-year reunion in Chicago 2012.
Kent Hawryluk left Marcadia Biotech, the company he co-founded in 2005, following its acquisition by Roche. He spent most of the summer traveling, and highlights included visiting Jenn Harper in Manhattan Beach, Calif., hiking and camping in the Western U.S. and cruising the Mediterranean. Currently he is advising life science companies on strategy while exploring startup ideas. In his spare time, Kent is pursuing a master’s degree in biology. EMP must have turned him into a perpetual student!
Trint Smith joined Joy Global (P&H Mining), a manufacturer of mining equipment for both above and below ground operations, as director of global service excellence. In his new role, Trint is responsible for creating global standards for more than 100 service centers and manufacturing sites located in 25 countries. Key areas of his role focus on facilities, operational standards and governing practices.
Chris Ball and family welcomed baby No. 6, Hudson Anthony Ball, on July 12. Hudson is doing great and is living back in the U.S. with Maranda and the rest of the crew while Chris wraps up his assignment in Italy. When Chris returns to the U.S., he will take on a new role at Whirlpool as general manager of laundry for North America after just less than two years living in Europe. He enjoyed his Italy experience and looks forward to getting back to the land of free refills and cheap(er) gas.
Tom Clark traveled all the way to Iceland to complete his fourth marathon. He and 30 teammates from Colorado ran to raise money for Challenge Aspen, a nonprofit that helps disabled vets get out of the hospital and enjoy the outdoors. Tom reported that Reykjavik is one of the prettiest places he has ever been and that the natural hot springs after the race were the best! Tom’s summer highlights also included sipping wine with Silver McDonald at Food & Wine in Aspen and houseboating with Jenn Harper at Lake Powell.
Chris Martinez is on his way to checking off another item from his bucket list! Thanks to incredible support from the Kellogg community, Chris’ Reciprocity Ring wish to build alongside President Carter on a Habitat Work Project is coming to life. Chris has applied over a half-dozen times in the past and feels so honored to be selected this year to go to Haiti to build homes for families devastated by the January 2010 earthquake. Chris and his son Ben (who just started 2nd grade) also took a summer trip to the Philippines to visit family. During their visit, they enjoyed zip lining, horseback riding, fishing, planting veggies and visiting a zero waste garden.
