Hi everyone, I’m happy to report that some of your were able to find the time to provide updates. I know it’s tough, but please send something if you can. Even if it’s just a few lines, people love to hear from you.
Richard Mandel writes in about some summertime classmate visits while dropping his two teenage daughters off at Northwestern for a three-week program. Richard and his family dropped in to visit with Cam and Diane Krueger and Michael Hollings and family in Wilmette. Everyone had a great time on the lake and barbecuing. All the kids have gotten to know each other over the years, so they had fun. Everyone is doing fine. In July, Rich was in Connecticut to celebrate Steve Bonebrake’s 50th with his old Kellogg roommate Rab Ker. Given the occasion, Rab showed up in full Scottish kilt (Editor’s note: Rab is ALWAYS looking for an opportunity to wear his kilt). The Bonebrakes and Ker clans are all doing well.
From Chip Gilbertson: “After many years in the world of sales and trading, I recently made a change. In June, Pig Up Station LLC published Fly Danny, Fly, an illustrated children’s book that I coauthored. It is about a boy and his flying pig and his adventure of personal discovery. The book was inspired by a neighborhood boy who died of epilepsy. Inspired by the boy, his family, and the foundation they created, dannydid.org, we set out to finish the book and donate part of the proceeds to the foundation. Dannydid.org focuses on increasing awareness about epilepsy and delivering seizure detection devices to families that cannot afford them. We have done school presentations around the Chicago area and inspired many to pursue the creative balance we all need. The book is starting to do very well. It is presently sold to retailers across seven states and the base is growing. More about our efforts and the book can be found at pigupstation.com. And as we say in flying pig land, Pig Up!”
Preston Kendall was named president at St. Martin de Porres High School. He joins Kellogg alum Tim Mahon ’91, who serves on the executive council of the board. St. Martin de Porres serves the economically marginalized youth of Chicago’s poorer far northern suburbs, providing a Catholic, private college preparatory high school experience to those who would otherwise have limited, poor educational options. One of the unique elements of the school is that students earn nearly 70 percent of their own tuition through its corporate internship program, gaining valuable work experience as part of their high school curriculum. St. Martin last year had a 100 percent college acceptance rate and the students were awarded over $6 million in scholarships.
Arthur Fleischmann’s Toronto agency has reached a major milestone of about 100 employees with clients that include Tetley, Mitsubishi Motors, Ferrero Chocolates, Corby Distilleries and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. Check out the website (johnst.com) or follow Arthur on Facebook. When out in L.A., Arthur sees Chip Bailey and his wife, Ruthie, who are still very close friends and who they see a few times a year as well. Arthur and daughter Carly are still working on their book, Carly’s Voice. The manuscript is nearly complete. The publish date is in late March in time for International Autism Awareness Month. They are getting great responses so far and some nice endorsements. Arthur comments, “I’m hopeful, though not planning on getting rich on it!”
Finally, an early reminder for everyone: Arthur says he will definitely come to Reunion next year and hopes to see everyone! Please start making your plans NOW, too. See you there! ‘Til next time, Tony
