Colby McGavin writes, “In April, I left Medtronic to join a smaller, private medical device company called AccessClosure. How could I say no when my new boss is a Kellogg alum? So far it’s been a great move, I’m enjoying the faster pace of the start-up world. Fortunately no relocation was required — Mike and I still live in San Francisco, and happily get to see a lot of Kellogg folks frequently!”
Betsy Cantlin spent two weeks in Italy this summer with Ben Jones (NU Law ’02). Thanks in part to great recommendations from all of their Kellogg friends, they ate and drank their way through Tuscany and had a spectacular time. Betsy also reported that she left Clorox in June after five years in a variety of brand management roles. She has shifted from trash bags and salad dressing to wireless routers and is now a brand manager in consumer marketing at Cisco.
In other Clorox-related news, Meghan Coles also departed the Oakland-based company over the summer to accept an exciting new role. She is still in the Bay Area, but is working at Prophet Consulting. Prophet is a boutique consulting firm focused on maximizing the value of brands through marketing, innovation and design. Meghan wrote that she is looking forward to leveraging everything she has learned at various CPG companies in a start-up environment.
Megan Hitchner and Matt Ketchum are the latest to join the growing Kellogg crew in San Francisco. Megan had been working at Bain’s New York office and transferred to the firm’s San Francisco office, where she is working in the private equity due diligence practice. Matt left his job at Wyeth Consumer to accept a role as a product manager at Shutterfly. Matt would like to urge the Class of 2007 to check out the site for all your greeting card and gift-giving needs this holiday season!
Danika (Van Beek) Addy and Chris Addy moved to Boston in November. Danika is transferring with Deloitte, while Chris has left Bain and will start working at The Bridgespan Group to pursue his passion in the nonprofit sector. If you live in Boston, they’d like you to get in touch!
Aaron Robinson sent a long-overdue note. He writes: “My wife Libby and I welcomed Penelope Bonahoom Robinson (PBR!), our first, in October 2009 in New York City. Since then, I quit my job at Merrill Lynch and we moved to Detroit where I work in our family business, Wolverine Packing Company. The switch from bond trading to meat processing was something. Think of Gordon Gekko as a butcher.”
A super-quick update came from Sara Borthwick, who writes: “I moved to Australia for another job within CBS in October. I’m the director of marketing and consumer insights at CBS Interactive in Sydney.” At the time Sara sent in this update, she was busy packing up to move five days later! Sara had been working at CNET in San Francisco since graduation.
Eben Roberts is still working at Homeland Security in Washington, D.C., where he is the section chief for Mexico operations. He notes: “It keeps me very busy these days, as our friends to the south continue to struggle with terrible violence. I hope to get overseas soon, so fingers crossed. My wife and I also have a new pup named Cooper. He is a great little guy, mischievous though! He makes sure I don’t have a second to rest, for sure!”
Scott Orn and Ben Munoz are thrilled that their side project (building online communities for patients suffering from rare diseases) is gaining a lot of traction. Bensfriends.org started with communities for two diseases, but in the last year it has reached 20 communities, serving more than 6,000 members and growing rapidly. In September, the network of communities logged over 200,000 page views, growing 20 percent in a single month! To request a network on behalf of a loved one suffering from a rare disease, or to help, check out BensFriends.org.
Ryan Clark wed fellow Dartmouth and Kellogg alum Carolyn Fusfeld ’08 on June 19 in Newport, R.I. Both Ryan and Carolyn are still at their original post-Kellogg jobs. Ryan is a turnaround and corporate restructuring consultant at AlixPartners and Carolyn is in brand management at Kraft. The Clarks live in Chicago.
Amy Roddy, who is working as investor relations manager for Transocean in Houston, completed the biggest project of her life this summer. She and her husband Jason welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Margaret Renee, on July 25. “Margot” is a happy and healthy baby.
Alina Laurie was proud to welcome her third child, Gretchen, on Sept. 25. Alina is married to Steve Heckard (NU MSC ’09). Their older children, Elliott (4) and Rosemary (2), are enjoying their new little sister. When not on maternity leave, Alina works as a program manager at OfficeMax Inc. Steve is director of operations at Northstar Aerospace. The growing family lives outside Chicago in Naperville, Ill.
“We are doing great here ... crazy but great,” writes Christine Anthony. She continues: “We have a new addition to the family. Sierra has a little brother! Skyler Ryan Anthony was born on July 22, weighing in at a whopping 9.5 pounds, and is absolutely perfect. My husband (Jeremy LeBoy) and big sister Sierra (3) and I are all doing great and having lots of laughs.”
Emma Blaylock writes: “Rick and I are very happy to announce we welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Annabel Eileen Blaylock, on April 25. Annabel is settling in well and I’m enjoying being a mum! We moved back to London, England last October, having lived in New York for two years. I left Sony when we moved and worked for a startup, Skiff LLC, building an e-reading service. Hoping to go back there later this year.”
On Sept. 19, Joris Wijpkema and Stephanie Pirishis welcomed baby girl Andrea Sophia Wijpkema (6 pounds, 11 ounces, 19 inches). Stephanie writes that Andrea is already loving all the Kellogg visitors she has been getting so far. Stephanie and Joris also purchased a new place in Chicago in order to welcome the little one.
Bryan Bullock and wife Billye welcomed their first child, Benjamin Davis Bullock, on July 2. According to Bryan, “He is already sporting a purple baby hoodie with ‘Northwestern’ across the front.”
Nuno M. Morgado writes: “After graduation, I took a quick trip home to Brazil to marry longtime sweetheart Marcela, then joined Dell in London in product marketing. In July, Antonio (out first son) was born here in London. Now we’re headed back home to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where I’ve been offered a position as a product line manager (consumer laptops, Latin America) with Dell.”
Ashish and Sutapa ’09 Kuthiala and the kids decided to finally move out of Chicago and landed back home in the sunny Bay Area. Sutapa joined Cisco Systems as a marketing consultant and Ashish took over a new line of business at Hewlett-Packard. He now manages HP Software’s networking management solution’s worldwide business. Between the two job changes and Shreya (6) and Rahul (3), it was a hectic move executed in under a week! Both Sutapa and Ashish look forward to catching up with their friends in California and helping Shreya and Rahul make new friends.
Squeaking in right under the press deadline, Craig Alcorn wrote to let us know that he was married on Oct. 2. Craig wed Ashley Rybowiak, whom he met on a plane returning from a Kellogg job interview (seriously!). Craig and Ashley were married in Oak Brook, Ill. Craig is an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in Chicago, where he specializes in M&A and securities. Ashley teaches sixth- and eighth-grade English at Bernard Zell Day School in Chicago. Jon Haug was a groomsman, Anuj Khanna was an usher, and Avi Oler, Cameron Smith, Lisa Ward and Sonia Khanna all attended the wedding.
On Sept. 5, Andrea Gouw married Tom Sparrenberger on the island of Lana’i, Hawaii. The late afternoon ceremony took place on a cliff-top lawn overlooking the sea and was officiated by Kellogg alumnus Eddie Chen. The occasion also served as a great reunion of Kellogg friends. In addition to Eddie, Christina Scharer, Daniel Tschopp, Sarah Teunis, Heather Stone, Dave Ripley, Michael Loesel, Anwei Li, Scott Orn, Lisa Sweet, Megan Hitchner, Matt Ketchum, Paul Renno, Katie Brodnik, Shannon Jones and Kristen Fedak were all there to celebrate!
Keep in touch, and send me your updates anytime!
