1988

We enjoyed another great Reunion, folks. Sorry to those who could not attend. A nice TG Friday, with Ed King and Catherine James King opening up their beautiful home to the '88'ers to keep socializing going until late. The picnic and party on Saturday were both well attended. Personally, this year was especially great. So many of us are sharing ideas on things outside of work, like getting kids into colleges and supporting their survival of middle school. Like many of you, I'm committed to keep these connections alive and am proud to say I'm on that path with a few. I think the alumni office sent out an all-points bulletin to have you send pictures in so maybe they're still stuck on your camera phones? You know, there is a way to get those snapshots off of your phone!

Anne Doty ’88 and daughter “GeGe”

Speaking of going through similar things, Mark Leizman and I spoke at length at Reunion and found that our daughters both have interests in Asian culture. His daughter Emily was part of an exchange program in Japan where she lived with a family near Kyoto for a couple of weeks. My daughter Jamie has been going to a Japanese immersion camp the past couple of years and I suspect she might do some kind of extended living gig in Japan too. Marc works for Grenway Capital in Cleveland, Ohio.

Since Reunion, Bob Baird has taken a new role with Dorel (think Cannondale, Schwinn, GT, Mongoose, Sugoi bicycles), where he'll be president of recreational/leisure segment of the firm. Good timing, Lance Armstrong needs a new bike. Speaking of bikers and France, over a Carmen's pizza, Patricia Collomb, Carolyn and Brent Koehler and I, decided we'd join up at Le Tour de France and do some biking in and around Patricia's family chalet, which is on the Le Tour route. Carolyn's doing some contract consulting these days. Completing the biking theme, I also had lunch with Jay Cohen, an avid biker, on a swing through San Fran. He was handling the stress of sending his oldest child off to college that week. I missed seeing Laura Cox, since she was taking care of delivering their son.

Bernardo Araya is director and partner of Southstar Consulting, a boutique marketing consulting company, focused on U.S. companies who wish to expand operation to Latin America or visa versa. It's sort of a version of Match.com for companies and they find the company's market information, partners, distribution and customers.

Anne Doty adopted Elizabeth Claire Xiu Ge Doty (you can all call her GeGe for now) in 2006. GeGe was 10 months old but now she's three years old and a bundle of energy, cuteness and imagination. Anne's trying not to think about how old she'll be when GeGe's in college, but as Anne puts it, she'll be able to withdraw from her 401K to pay for tuition and not pay the penalty! These days, they're doing the petting zoo and playground vacations. Anne writes that she is living the dream and still working for R.R. Donnelly.

Fred Kindle left ABB, where he was CEO, and recently joined U.S. private-equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice. They're trying to boost their business in Europe and Fred has been hired to help the company find takeover opportunities in Europe. He'll be living in London.

David Garrity took a position with interClick as CFO and also will serve as chief strategy officer and spokesman for the company. He'll be managing interClick's finance and accounting groups and take care of internal controls, public files, corporate development, like merger and acquisition partnerships, and external financing initiatives.

I'm doing my part to take Motorola to the next level, the next chapter of its story. Having fun, looking forward to the future. Jamie's filling out college applications and is now a big bad senior at her high school. Wow. Rosemary's teaching another year of high school, molding young minds. Write me. I'm in LinkedIn, and I'm building my Facebook page, so find me at these places.
