2003

Ahhh, it certainly does feel good to be back. As many of you know, we enjoyed our first hiatus from our demanding roles as class reps this past summer. The most visible sign of our retreat was, of course, a gap in the regular Class of 2003 contribution to Kellogg World. Despite one or maybe even two pleas to remain here in the States and continue the arduous challenge of producing knee-slappingly great photo captions every few months, the siren song of the South Atlantic was too mighty. We packed our Kellogg duffel bags, shut down our IBM Thinkpads (we miss you, KIS), filled the purple travel mugs and headed out for two spectacular months in the Bahamas. Time well spent. Very refreshing. Tindley, with shimmering gold beads braided into her hair, was a perfect "10" running along the beach in front of the Ramada Inn every morning. Barry, lying on a chaise longue with a wide-brimmed straw hat (two bucks, Bahamian, at the open air market) and zinc oxide coating his rather substantial nose, was the image of youth as he challenged the sun to tan his sculpted form from dawn till dusk. This was a hiatus of hiatuses, fellow classmates. And we thank you for the gift of warmth and relaxation.

But enough about us. It's time to get back to business and help to protect our class from extinction! It's time to cheer our collective successes and thumb our noses at our secret failures! It's time to lead by example and turn lemons into lemonade! It's time to speak of wee'uns, weddings, workthings and such.

Wee'uns:

As you will see, our Kellogg classmates have been nothing short of "busy," if you catch our drift.

Bill Nahmias and lovely bride Joann are proud to announce the arrival of Andrew Robert Nahmias on May 1. Andrew weighed in at 7 lbs., 15 oz. and measured 20 inches. Both mother and baby handled the birth thing well and recovered nicely. In May, Bill accepted a position in the corporate strategy group at Miller Brewing Co. in fair Milwaukee, Wis. Since then, Joann graduated from NU with a master's degree in counseling psychology, the family has lived in two different temporary apartments, got robbed, bought a house and moved (a few times). They are now settled up in Milwaukee and enjoying watching Andrew get bigger every day. They have seen a lot of Christy and Dean Peterson, Sue and Chris Nolte, Sue and Matt Ross, and Rob and Jen Stephenson over the past few months.

Rob and Jennifer Stephenson have settled into Seattle, where they moved from Chicago in spring of 2005. Rob is still with Jones Lang LaSalle, and Jennifer is on maternity leave with Kraft foods to take care of their new daughter Anne Dorothy. Rob snuck away from parent duties to "bag a few local peaks" this summer, including Rainier. Rob and Jen have also been reportedly hanging out with Mark Hamachek, Brian Helm and his fiancée Amanda Squires, Tony Martinez '02 and his wife Tracy, Lori and Chip Craw '02, Ben and Laura Burke (who have a new daughter), Jay Marine '02 and his wife Megan, and Joe Levy and his wife Heather (who also have a new daughter). Greg Kennealey and wife Shannon are thrilled to announce the birth of their daughter Emma. She was born on Aug. 11, weighed 7 lbs., 11 oz., and was 20.5 inches tall (or long, depending on if she's standing or lying down). Emma and Shannon are home and both are doing well. As if childbirth weren't enough news for Greg, he recently left LaSalle Investment Management to join the asset management team at Strategic Hotels & Resorts.

Denise Lazo and Arturo Vera also welcomed a baby girl into the world on June 4. Micaela is an adorable new Kelloggian and can burp in two languages. From Down Under, Michael Ilczynski reports several pieces of big news: 1. He and his wife Trudy welcomed their first daughter, Tess, in March; 2. Michael has a new job, running strategy and corporate development for seek.com.au, Australia's leading online employment and training business; 3. Michael recently caught up with Ben Frewin in Sydney — Ben and his wife Emily recently had their second child, Harvey, younger brother of a very happy Ester, who loves having a new playmate. Ben's enjoying his job as an investment director at Sydney private equity firm, Archer Capital, which was recently bolstered by the arrival of Jose Matosantos '06.

Jeb Trowbridge and wife Ali announced the arrival of Elizabeth "Lilly" Braislin Trowbridge into the world on Aug. 5. She weighed 8 lbs., 10 oz., and was 21.5 inches long. Jeb is now working in sales with the entertainment products division of Tribune Media Services.

But that ain't the end of the babies! Kanchan Patkar and husband Dnyanesh had their second baby girl, Isha Patkar, on April 25. Older sister Ruhee (2) loves having a baby sister. After 12 weeks of maternity leave, Kanchan is back at Kimberly-Clark. She was recently promoted to Brand Manager. Way to go, Kanchan!

Allegra Stella Emilia Cuomo was born to Paolo Cuomo and Alessia on July 24. Everyone is doing well, Alessia is enjoying maternity leave and Paolo is still with McKinsey in London. Paolo and Alessia have also opened a ceramic tile shop, so if you are redecorating a house in London let him know and he'll do you a fabulous deal in lovely Italian floor and wall tiles. Just mention Kellogg World when asked how you heard about this offer.

Jenny Liang sends news of a new baby, Charles Alistair Milward. He was born on June 7, 2006 to Jenny and Ian Milward '02. The happy family is still living in New York.

Kevin Pendleton and Michelle (Medill '94) celebrated the birth of their first child, Evan, on May 27. They have since visited with a few of our 2003 classmates and their young ones. Lisa (Hsueh) Swearingen visited the Pendleton clan with her new son Reed back in June. Then, Yihao Zhang and his wife Wendy visited them with their two children in July. And finally, the Pendeletons visited Chuck Scholpp, his wife Elaine and their child Alexander in Denver at the "infamous" Casa Bonita on Labor Day Weekend (dear readers, you all do recall what went down at the Casa Bonita, right?). Kevin reports that he also found Evan some great shades to help with that mile-high Denver sun at the end of August. In addition to finally sleeping through the night, Evan has taken up kick-boxing and is accepting baby-modeling offers. Michelle and Kevin are still enjoying their stay in the D.C. area, where they have watched the recent oil market heat from the inside for the last three years at ExxonMobil while Michelle has been running the Mongerson Prize for Northwestern's Medill while also supporting the Military Reporters and Editors trade group.

Winning this issue's award for "Most Identifiable Baby" is Burke Brown, new son of Ben Brown and Maggie Burke. Burke was born on March 15.

Margarita and Deniz Cultu welcomed their daughter Carolina Izel into the world on July 18 in Saint Paul, Minn. Carolina weighed in at 6 lbs., 10 oz. Mom and Dad say they have quickly learned that Carolina now manages the household.

More babies! More babies! Next in line is Rachel Wexler, who reports (a bit late, but still great to hear) that she and Michael had a baby boy named Gabriel Jason on Jan. 20. Rachel reports that he has a wonderful smile, an insatiable curiosity, and (unsurprisingly) a ton of energy. They're having a ball in Boston with him!

Andy Brown, a rookie (late-bloomer) to Kellogg World submissions, writes to us from Fairfield, Conn. Andy is pleased to report that he and Claudia welcomed their beautiful daughter, Victoria Rose, to the world last April. Victoria arrived two months early and weighed in at a svelte three pounds. After a month in the NICU, in which they frantically put together the nursery, the proud parents brought her home (in time for the World Cup), where Victoria is now thankfully thriving. Contrary to the odds-makers  predictions, Andy is still with GE Capital. In fact, the recalcitrant financiér was recently promoted to vice president, where he works with distressed debt in the Restructuring Finance Group. Although operating in quite a different environment than when with the Peace Corps in rural Honduras or teaching high school pre-Kellogg, Mr. Brown seems to have been able to bridge both worlds admirably...though we still think he's most likely to open up a surf shop/orphanage/bakery in Costa Rica by 2010. Andy reports that he has recently visited with, on different occasions, several fellow 03ers including Don Gualdoni, Rajul Aggarwal, Kurt Kempkes and Oz Rubio, along with Barnaby Olson '04. Keep the submissions flowing, Brown!

Gulshan Verma '03
Gulshan Verma '03, Anusha and new son Karan take a break from feeding the waterfowl to pose for Kellogg World.

Anuj Gupta '03
Anuj Gupta '03, son Arnav and wife Shivani.

Gulshan Verma and wife Anusha gave birth to a baby boy, Karan Verma, on Nov. 21. He delights in making them run around after him. The Verma clan is still based in Los Angeles, although Gulshan is now with Yahoo! They still see old Kellogg friends (Karen Lee, Nancy Tanaka, Anuj Gupta and Russell Roenick), but not as much as they'd like to. Class of '03: let's help Gulshan to change that, shall we? Over the summer, Gulshan and Anusha attended Sanuj Ravindran's wedding to Neera Dahiya in India and caught up with some ol' Kellogg friends (Sriram Jambunathan and Vikram Bhartia) there. More on that wedding in a bit.

And, in final baby news, Anuj Gupta reports that he and wife Shivani are proud parents to a baby boy. Arnav was born on March 25. Says Anuj, "This is that one time where the happiness of becoming a parent far superseded all of the excitement and anticipation that I built up through the pregnancy." Arnav is a joy to his parents. Anuj is going on his third year at Countrywide in the treasury management area and enjoying it. He can't believe it has been three years since we graduated. Also, Shivani graduated from dental school — another big milestone for the both of them.

Weddings:

After all those babies, what comes next? Logically, marriage! And so, we begin with our first new duo. In the fine tradition of glamorous fall wedding, Beth Heintzelman and Rakesh Sehgal became man and wife on Sept. 2 in Chevy Chase, Md., at the Woodend Mansion.

A little bit earlier in the year (May 13), Kellogg's First Couple, Brian Gauck and Daisy Hatch, got hitched in Los Angeles.

A bit of Kellogg (and national) history was made when our li'l darlings, Mandy Taft and Leti Pearman, got married on Aug. 26, in the good state of Massechusetts. A large Kellogg crew was in attendance, and the newlyweds left for a wonderful honeymoon in Greece afterwards. Congratulations, Mandy and Leti!

Not pictured but present: Corinne Foo '03 and Steve Atkins '03.

Also in attendance at Mandy and Leti's wedding was Ben Mahnke, who set the precedent for the Taft-Pearman marriage by getting hitched in central Massechusetts on Memorial Day! Reports the elder Mahnke, "Various Kelloggians (especially the always dangerous Atilla Toth) have threatened everything from getting cut off from their Christmas card list to being forced to re-take FinD if I don't get one of our wedding photos into this next Kellogg World. Some of them could tell you more about the weekend. While I successfully married the right woman, most of the rest of it went by in a wave. The whole shindig went down on Memorial Day weekend at a summer camp we rented in central Massachusetts. The Kellogg crew, which clearly didn't get enough of the ski trip the first two times around, all piled into one large cabin together at the camp. I can only imagine the kind of trouble they caused over the weekend (I only have the evidence of what they did to my car); let's say I was a little distracted the whole time." Here's to you, Ben Mahnke.

Andrew Freed and his wife Cristiana were married on Aug. 12 in Napa Valley. There were some Kellogg folks there, including Jeff Leach, Gerry Gilligan, Emmy Berlind (and her husband Andy), Andy Pollack, Vlad and Natalie Shlafman, Chris Pratt (and his fiancée Bea) and Brian Talbott. It was a beatiful day and all had a good time. Andrew missed the post-wedding bar with the Kellogg crew, but he heard stories of hook-ups, people doing snow angels in parking lots, and one unfortunate soul who didn't arrange transportation back to the hotel and had to borrow money to pay the owner of the bar (The Deuce, West Side) for a ride home. That's our class. All class!

And while we're talking about spectacular L.A. weddings, we'd be remiss if we didn't spend a few moments discussing the wedding of Javier Rendon to his adoring new bride Amy. Javier and Amy made it real on May 6 and were joined by a legion of even more adoring bridesmen: Amit Nag, Doug Dixon, and Bob Hostetter. Kellogg was there in full force, of course of course, dancing up a storm to the rockin' tunes of none other than Huey Lewis and the News. Way to go, Javier and Amy!

Representing our 2003 family in other parts of the globe, we begin with Shail Thaker, who reports on his wedding to Liz Elmhirst a year ago in Chelsea, London. In attendance were quite a few Kellogg brethren and sistren. Shail reports that a great time was had by all, and he and Liz were touched by how many made international trips to celebrate in London.

Where's Kellogg? Circle the following folks' heads to reveal a very familiar pattern: Ajan Reginald '04 and Sara Reginald, Manuel Ho '03 and Fiona Tan '03, Florian Funke '03, Ariel Hasson '03 and Inbar, Chris Bayham '03 and Val, Sid Sharma '03 and Michaela, Mareike Willimsky '03, Chris Jones '03, Joe Packee '03 and Jen, Paolo Cuomo '03 and Alessia, Pietro Brambilla '03 and Katia.

Taking the mighty matrimonial thrones are newlyweds Abid Ahmed '03 and Mohsina Khan.

And then our very own Abid Ahmed married new bride Mohsina Khan on Nov. 24, 2005, in New Delhi. The couple now lives in Minneapolis, where Abid is working as strategic marketing manager with Pentair Inc.

The wedding of Neera and Sanuj Ravindran '03; bride and groom are accompanied by friends including Kellogg classmates Gulshan Verma '03, Vikram Bhartia '03, and Sriram Jambunathan '03.

Not to be outdone in Indian weddings, Sanuj Ravindra married Neera Dahiya whom he met in 2002 as a part of the Kellogg exchange program with the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad. They were married in New Delhi, as well, on July 5 and had subsequent receptions in both Cochin, India and Saginaw, Mich. (also known as "mini-Cochin"). Kellogg classmates in attendance included Gulshan Verma, Sriram Jambunathan, Vikram Bhartia, Sudarshana Yeleswarapu and Neel Shah.

Finally, we land in the state-that-would-be-country, Texas! In a crushing blow to lovesick fans across the Kellogg galaxy, yet another Kelloggarhythm, Anne "Ankle" Engelking committed herself to holy matrimony this past spring. Details? Ankle married the charming Ashley Harrison Smith on March 10 in Dallas, in a lakeside ceremony just before sunset. Tindley Gilbert provided the vocal accompaniment, proving that once a Kelloggarhythm, always a Kelloggarhythm. Ashley is an actor and professor of theatre at Southern Methodist University. Originally from Wichita, Kan., he moved to Dallas in 2003 (coincidentally, on the same weekend that Ankle moved to Dallas) after living in New York City for eight years. Given that a Shakespeare quoting competition began their relationship, it was not long before the writing (iambic pentameter, of course) was on the wall. After honeymooning in Tulum, Mexico, at an eco-resort, they settled back in their East Dallas bungalow with the company of two fabulous cats. In the professional world, Ankle is still working at Frito Lay and recently became marketing manager on the SunChips brand. Ashley recently completed his fourth season at the Utah Shakespearean Festival, where his featured role was Laertes in Hamlet. Ah, sweet love.

Work things:

The winds of change continue to blow, proving once again that we should never have committed to a career plan on our admission essay.

Branimir Petranovic '03 and, um, Dubrovnik (12th century).
Branimir Petranovic '03 and, um, Dubrovnik (12th century).

Take Lee Purcell, for example. After almost three years, he recently left Deutsche Bank's real estate investment banking group to join Credit Suisse's real estate private funds group. Lee's new group works with private equity general partners to raise capital from pension funds, endowments, foundations and family offices. For those in the New York City area, he says he will no longer be chained to his desk and will be more available for lunch or dinner. For those not in the area, he will be traveling more throughout the United States and some international (but predominantly in the Northeast/Southeast) and could make a surprise visit. And for those who really haven't caught up with Lee in a while, you'd be interested to know that he and wife Dianna moved out of Manhattan a couple of years ago to live in Staten Island. They bought a house five minutes from Lee's in-laws, who watch their son during the day. Dianna is still working at Towers Perrin and Hayden is 21 months old as of the writing of this article.

Spencer Phua writes that he left Lehman Brothers Inc., in June and started work with their client, Prudential Investment Management of Newark N.J. Spencer is now senior credit analyst covering U.S. banks and finance companies. Nice work, Spencer!

Congrats to Chris Dupre who was promoted to manager at Bain & Co. in the Dallas office earlier this year, following his return from a six-month stint in Melbourne, Australia.

John Kim reports from Korea: "Got a craving for Big Macs? Well, that's my new gig — hawking Big Macs, Egg McMuffins and Filet-O-Fish. I'll be the senior marketing director at McDonald's Korea as of Oct. 1, so if you're passing through Seoul and get a hankering for a taste of home, give me a shout!"

Pack 64 Cubmaster Scott Abbott '03 and his son, Cub Scout Nick Abbott.
Pack 64 Cubmaster Scott Abbott '03 and his son, Cub Scout Nick Abbott.

Scott Abbott recently joined Diamond Management & Technology Consultants as a principal in the firm's financial services practice. More important, Scott was also recently appointed Cubmaster of his son's Cub Scout pack in Northbrook, Ill.

And a welcome update from Karin Larson-Pollock. Karin was recently promoted to executive director of strategic planning and women's services at Methodist Hospital in Houston (same hospital she was at before), which, as it turns out, is where Andy Robbins's father is the chair of medicine — small world! The new job has been fun but crazy for Karin. We know she'll be fine. Just fine.

Barry Grant has left Detroit. After nearly 10 years with Ford Motor Co., Barry summoned the strength to fight the irresistible pull/charm of the Motor City, and headed to the promised land of Northern California. He's taken a job as senior product marketing manager with PayPal, and he's living in the heart of the city and loving every moment of it. Consider this an open invitation for yet another place to stay in San Francisco if you're traveling through! And open a PayPal account if you haven't already; you'll be glad you did.

On June 1, Jose Aragon launched the Multi-Alpha Portfolio, AIG Global Investment Group's new multi-strategy hedge fund. His plans of world conquest are proceeding apace. He recently ran into Marty Dorow '90 and Bill Galanis '05 in the elevator. "No one was injured in the collision," says Aragon.

Bernard Sfeir and Priti Chinai (both '03) conquer Paris.

After a few weeks in Cuba (the last days of Castro, so a shaky environment, but amazing weather, water and nice golf clubs), Bernard Sfeir got himself promoted to senior manager at Accenture Paris and transferred to the strategy/global service line. He's also a lecturer at a top French business school (specialized masters at ESCP-EAP) and another engineering school in aeronautics (SUPEAREO) in — guess what — decision science ("Thank you, Scott, for making me love this discipline. You're the best!"). Concerning other '03 alumni, Bernard met with Priti Chinai in Paris this summer. He's also in close contact with Sandrine Murcia '04 and president of the French alumni club (Bernard is co-chair).

After three great years in Seattle, Josh Miller and his wife Rachel are once again on the move. This summer, he wrapped up his job as the director of Jconnect Seattle while Rachel graduated from UW Law School and took the California Bar. In September, they began a ten-month stint living in Cordoba, Argentina. Rachel received a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct environmental legal research on the right to clean water, and Josh will be learning Spanish, working part-time as a nonprofit consultant and exploring the countryside on his bicycle. Best of luck to both of you, Josh and Rachel, and safe travels!

And a short update from the Kim Sawnson: Kim, Dan and Cohen have moved to Seattle (backfilling Josh Miller), as Kim is now a marketing manager for T-Mobile. Finally, no more Chicago winters! They've moved back to be closer to family and plan to remain in the Northwest long term. Kim says other alums in the area should to feel free to contact her, but no, she can't get them a good deal on a phone.

After two years in guar manufacturing (you all may need to look up "guar gum" again), Mike Ebner moved on to the next logical step: wind energy. He's accepted a position with GE Energy in Atlanta working in operations and logistics for wind turbines. Let Mike know if you own any land on a windy hilltop!

Jessica Yang has moved along as well. After three years rotating through Sprint in Kansas, Tennessee and Georgia, Jess has successfully "graduated" and will be moving out to Irvine, Calif. In Sunny SoCal, she'll be running national channel marketing and promotions for Boost Mobile.

On the Ravi Rhagavapudi front, he finished his sales representative rotation in Chicago with Guidant (now Boston Scientific since the acquisition) and moved to sunny and warm Minneapolis/St. Paul to take up a marketing position. Ravi says he's missing the sales life and money big time!

Natasha Salij has lots of news to report, too. After switching jobs in January from consulting to industry, she's had an unexpected switch again. In May, her boss was promoted and the company reorganized geographically such that her job was effectively eliminated! Perhaps a first for our class! Fortunately, Natasha had several options for a new role, many in New York and one to go with her boss. She decided to take the opportunity to go to Europe. She's moving to London, where she'll be the head of strategy for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Please give Natasha a shout if you live in London (or Europe) and/or you visit London. She'd love to see Kellogg friends!

Huy Hoang had enough of being tall, blond and blue-eyed in Stockholm (haven't we all?), so he decided to continue his GIM Vietnam experience by moving to Saigon to work as the managing director for Softbank Vietnam. So far, things have been good, as Huy can see the sun everyday (for once) and eat good food. Huy hopes everybody is doing well and hope to see his friends visiting him in Vietnam soon.

We've received hundreds of letters asking what's happening with Chad Mizee. Well, now we have an answer. We recently learned that he has been promoted to product director at Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Inc., working on the ACUVUE brand. Congrats, Chad!

Dean Peterson is doing well. He's still playing with power tools at Bosch, but he's now on the Skil product line. He and Christy are back in Evanston after buying a condo last fall. They recently vacationed in Italy and met up for a traditional Italian dinner with fellow MMMer Gabriele Galeani and his family. It was great fun and GG made sure they ate and drank plenty!

Ending our news of Workthings, Betsy Leis has lots to report. Betsy moved back to Chicago last summer, taking a finance job with Orbitz.com. Once again she had to explain to her family that although she is now a registered travel agent, that's more of a perk than her job description. She doubts they believe her after her two years of working at Target, where her specialty was those red and white plastic shopping bags. One of the best parts about the move, says Betsy, has been the opportunity to reconnect with fellow Kelloggians, including Debbie Hartman, Mark Redman, Katja and Dean Lindo, Mike Simonton, Barry Grant (he's hot!), Sam Pollack and Valerie Weisman. When Mark is not busy globe trotting, he joins Debbie and Betsy for their semi-weekly Sunday brunch where they rate restaurants based on how long you would stand in line for the meal. The book deal is still in progress, but they'll keep us posted! If you know of the perfect 45-minute breakfast spot please send Betsy, Mark or Debbie a note.

Finally, on to our favorite category. An eclectic mix of gatherings, sundry news briefs and general generalosities.

It's true. Clinton Kent was in Beantown for Mandy and Leti's wedding. Clinton surprised us with the news that he and Chris Tucker got caught up in the moment and hitched as well, since Massachusetts is the only enlightened state that allows gay marriage. With this marriage, Clinton admits he's given up hope of running for any political office. So sad. So sad.

Dean Lindo and Katja have been welcoming many a visitor to the fabulous Lindo Suites in Chicago! In August, Barry Grant flew into town from his new home in San Francisco for the Air Show weekend, and enjoyed a rooftop BBQ, Lindo-style, with lots of old Kellogg friends. Then, a few weekends later, Javier Rendon and new bride Amy (also living in San Francisco now) stayed at the Suites. Trust us, the award points are costly, but well worth it.

Brian Fitzpatrick had a birthday celebration at the Shore Club Hotel in South Beach, Miami. Several members of our team were there.

Last, but never the least, Branimir Petranovic says hi from Dubrovnik, Croatia, where he will be moving permanently as of next year.
