EMP-35

Bob Kalchik writes us to say he is now vice president, market finance and accounting, lodging finance for Marriot. Bob lives in Washington, D.C., and is enjoying his new climate.

Usually this column has news about our classmates moving to new areas, “climbing the corporate ladder” and accepting new positions or responsibilities. Good news is always easy and fun to pass along. Unfortunately, the following concerns a tragedy about one of our EMP-35 classmates and his family. Bob Kalchik sent this information to Ed Fialkowski with the approval of the Janeway family. Terry Janeway and his wife, Maureen, wanted all of EMP-35 to hear this news from them directly and said they would appreciate it if there could be some small note in Kellogg World in honor of their daughter, Katie.

As all of you know, Terry, Maureen and their two children moved to Santa Barbara, Calif., soon after graduation in 1997. Terry took on a new role as CFO of a small company based out of that city. The kids began to fit into the community well. On July 25, Terry’s 14-year-old daughter had a swimming pool accident at a local community pool. She died the morning of July 26 in the hospital. As you can imagine, it was devastating for Terry, Maureen and their 16-year-old son, Christopher. Eric Jakubowski and Bob Kalchik flew to Santa Barbara for the July 30 funeral.

The obituary for Katherine Celeste “Katie” Janeway included the following sentiments: “Our courageous and loving daughter, Katie, passed on to the compassionate arms of her Lord on Friday morning, July 26. Her lifelong fight for love and happiness finally succumbing at her young age of 14.
“Katie moved to Santa Barbara from her Illinois home three and a half years ago and bravely made the difficult transition to new friends and a new life. Katie blossomed here as a Special Olympian athlete and teammate, earning the News-Press Special Olympian Athlete of the Month Award in 2001. Katie was an experienced horseback rider and loved to swim and go ‘tubing.’ Katie never let her epilepsy or other disabilities deter her, overcoming time and again her challenges with determination and courage. She leaves all those who knew her in her short life better off for knowing her.

“Katie graduated from La Colina Junior High School in June and was looking forward to joining her brother at San Marcos High School this fall as a freshman. She loved music and could often be heard singing to her CDs.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made in Katie’s name (and honor) to the Santa Barbara Special Olympics, 423 W. Victoria, Santa Barbara, 93101 (805.884.1516).”
