2001

Hello everyone! I’ve had a lot of fun over the last few months attending Kellogg weddings all over the country, from San Francisco to Vermont! And then there are those single folks among us who continue their adventures around the world. Well, enjoy the upcoming holidays and keep the news coming!

Chris Mulshine and wife, Michelle, welcomed the birth of son Colin Branagan, who was born May 15.

Ernst & Young LLP’s Chicago office has promoted James P. Sherman to partner.

Zach Taylor and Barb Borgstrom TMP ’00 were married in a beautiful ceremony in San Francisco on Aug. 3. The following day, many Kellogg friends continued the celebration with a wine tour in Napa Valley.

Susanne van Laarhoven was married to Loray Greiner on Aug. 2 in The Netherlands. The next day, they took all of their guests for a full day of sailing fun on an old, very big, wooden Dutch sailing boat on the IJsselmeer, formerly the Southern Sea. Because Loray and Susanne lived for many years in Asia, their friends organized colorful shirts to create a tropical atmosphere. Many Kellogg friends were able to join in the celebrations.

Rob Leonard was married to Naomi Barenbaum on July 6 in Marin County, Calif. Quite a few classmates were in attendance!

Todd Asmuth and his wife, Dana, have a new daughter named Alexandra Diane Asmuth. Alexandra was born Aug. 5.

Tushar Dhayagude and his wife, Aparna, are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Ruhi. Born March 18, Ruhi is always smiling and is keeping everyone busy.

Grant Jackson and his wife, Katie, are happy to announce that Graham Austen Jackson came into the world Aug. 12 at 3:56 p.m., weighing 9 pounds, 1ounce, with a length of 21 1/2 inches.

Jonathan Glaser and his wife, Alisha, have settled down in Charlotte. They are keeping busy with their new daughter, Leah Grace, who was born in October of 2001. Jonathan and Alisha just got back from a West Coast tour where they saw Kendall Riding, Molly and Rob Bishop, Piper and Dom Engels, Kristen and Doug Higgins and little Lauren Ann Higgins.

Kellogg '01 classmates Elizabeth Likens, Chris Lane, Guiomar Alvarez, Pablo Urgoiti, Clarissa Lourenco and her boyfriend, Roberto, Debora Fang, Yael Lev Avidor and Lucy Carruthers enjoy some time together sailing on a boat while celebrating the marraige of Susanne van Laarhoven and Loray Greiner.

Scott Leonard and his wife, Lisa, are the proud parents of a healthy baby girl, Susan Lucille Leonard, born July 25.

Ryan McKinney and his wife, Liz, had their first baby, William (Will) Hale McKinney, July 1. He loves visitors, for anyone passing through Dallas.

Ari Zur and his wife, Niki, have a new addition to the family! Skyler Elizabeth Zur was born Aug. 23 and weighed in at 7 pounds 1 ounce. Skyler is happy and healthy, Niki is doing great, and they are enjoying living in south Florida.

Jorge Aguayo and his wife, Pilar Aguayo ’02 are moving back to the Dominican Republic the first week of September. They write, “We just couldn’t handle another Chicago winter! Feel free to drop by when you’re ready for a change of weather come January.”

James P. Sherman

After graduation, Peter Cork returned to Ottawa, Canada, and worked a term as an advisor to the prime minister, specializing in agriculture and biotechnology. In July, he returned to his home agency, the Communications Security Establishment, where he was promoted to director of planning. In addition to strategy formulation, Peter is also responsible for a program designed to improve general management practices. “CSE sponsored me at Kellogg, and it’s particularly satisfying to be able to pay their generosity back by applying what I learned.”

Several co-workers of Lisa Frazier (nee Mazzacato) wanted everyone to know that Lisa was publicly thanked in a press conference by the mayor of New York for her amazing contribution to the fire department in a McKinsey project that she worked on analyzing the fire department’s response to Sept 11. One colleague writes, “Mazz is a star for those of us inside McKinsey. She has been given accolades by various people including the managing director of the firm and heads of various offices.” Great job to Lisa!

Wendolyn Holland has been working since immediately after 9-11 at a security and investigations firm, GlobalOptions in D.C., as its vice president of corporate strategy. In D.C., she’s been hanging out with Chris Lozier and Monisha Kaplan, as well as Gwen Jones, and Todd Wincup and his wife, Tammy.

Ben Hsieh has been working as associate brand manager for Mattel since August. He worked on the relaunch of the mega brand He-Man, Masters of the Universe and the new Yu-Gi-Oh toy line. Ben also guided the creative direction on the brand new He-Man cartoon on Cartoon Network (which aired in September). He was then promoted and moved to the Hot Wheels marketing group in February to work in the Hot Wheels innovation and trend group. He’s been rooming with Benjamin Fonseca in Hermosa Beach, Calif.

Andrew Malkin and his wife, Ellery, wrote in about their “topsy-turvy year full of uncertainty when it came to their employment.” Despite Andrew’s long-standing desire to market wine globally for a Beringer Blass or an equivalent player, that search proved endlessly frustrating, so he elected to look back in book publishing and took a project job working for the CEO of AOL Time Warner’s book group. After a month there doing sales and marketing analysis, they created a spot for him — one which had never existed in the book business. It is the role of brand manager, working on the company’s franchise authors. He will begin by focusing on the best-selling author, James Patterson, before moving on to manage other book properties. Fortunately, Ellery was able to transfer her offer from Kraft Chicago to their Tarrytown, N,Y., office and began in September on Kool Aid. At press time, they were in the process of looking for a place to live somewhere in New York or Connecticut.Marisa O’Connor, Julie Oh, Robb Hoenick and Juan Jose Orellana created their own alumni KOA in August. Marisa writes, “We spent 10 days in Peru exploring Lima and Cusco and most importantly, hiking the Inca Trail to Macchu Pichu. It was an amazing experience and we had fantastic weather. Only Julie Oh, our “strong like ox” member escaped the altitude sickness and food poisoning that the rest of us suffered. Nonetheless, with 10 porters, a cook, a guide and a five-star hotel waiting for us at the end, it was the cushiest KOA I have ever heard of.”

Marisa also spent a great August weekend in Cape Cod with Priti Patel, Paul Celi, Bendee Anzures and Robb Hoenick. She remembers, “We sipped margaritas by the pool, danced to cheesy music and barbecued up a feast. Priti works at L’Oreal (free makeup for friends!), Bendee is at Nabisco (lots of free cookies for friends!), Robb is at PanAmSat (free concert tickets for friends!) and Paul is at LVMH (haven’t seen any free stuff, but he’s working on it!). I am still at Prophet and enjoyed my summer in New York after spending six months working in Europe.”

Isi Okogun writes, “I am doing great at Goldman Sachs here in Chicago. I joined a running club, and I am training for the marathon Oct. 13. Other 2001’ers that I am in touch with periodically are Brian Black, Deb Spence, Monisha Kaplan, Chris Lozier, Suzanne Ogunsanya, Tope Folayan, Nneka Rimmer etc. Call me if you are ever in Chicago.”

In case you’re wondering what’s new with Brian Poger, he flew straight from a two-month holiday last summer to work just outside of Philadelphia. After witnessing the 2002 graduation, he and Amy flew to Cambodia to see Angkor, Laos, to drink BeerLao, then on to Myanmar to discover just how awful a government can be, and then to Hong Kong to blow all the money they saved from traveling southeast Asia. After they returned to San Francisco, Brian and his dad went north to do a bit of fly fishing in Alaska and then headed back home to see Brian’s new nephew.

Evelyn To wanted to tell everyone what’s happening with some Kellogg folks in Hong Kong. There was a mini Hong Kong Kellogg Reunion held in one of HK’s hottest dancing spots in June. Party on class of 2001!

Art Weiss and a group of Kellogg friends traveled to Yosemite National Park over Memorial Day weekend.
