1984
Hello
from Riverwoods. After a summer of three kids in four day
camps, 10 days with in-laws and a 22-hour car trip (with 17
potty stops) home from New Jersey, my sports utility vehicle
and I are definitely glad the school year has begun. I hope
that everyone is doing well. Indie and I hope to hear about
your latest endeavors soon.
Over
the summer I had the opportunity to see Brian and Amy Hand
and their children. Their second child, Kate, was born July
2. Their 2-year-old is definitely the son of two Kellogg grads.
Brian asked Teddy to say hello to me, and Teddy thrust out
his right hand and loudly stated, “Pleased to meet you!”
I thought this was so cute that I tried to teach the same
thing to my 2-year-old. He was just not getting it. Then I
realized that it must be genetic. My husband is a U of C grad.
Jane
E. Rady has been named corporate vice president, strategy
and technology, for Irvine, Calif.-based Allergan Inc. and
Advanced Medical Optics Inc.
Laura
Price Coplan is happily living in Glencoe, Ill., with her
husband, James, and their children. After some time doing
the working mother thing, Laura decided to put her career
on hold to spend more time at home with her family.
Steve DeKrey writes, “I have remained in Hong Kong since
1996. In January, I will make the seven-year mark, which qualifies
me for permanent residency. This status will allow me to remain
in Hong Kong without a work visa and will speed up my transit
through immigration, a milestone that pleases my Chinese wife,
as well.
“One
of the programs I direct is the Kellogg executive MBA program
at the School of Business and Management at the Hong Kong
University of Science and Technology. Among the joys in running
this program is the constant connection to Kellogg in Evanston.
I spent a week there at the Allen Center during the summer
and attended a very good meeting with Dean Dipak Jain about
the future of Kellogg internationally!
“Another
joy in this job is welcoming some of my former professors
to Hong Kong to teach our students. Well known to many class
of 1984ers would be Al Isenman, Mort Kamien, Steve Burnett,
Sid Deshmukh, Don Jacobs and Lakshman Krishnamurthi.
“If
any classmates find themselves in Hong Kong with some time,
please make a trip to our university campus. HKUST is Kellogg’s
home in Hong Kong!”
Candace
Quinn married Michael Quinn of Scottsdale, Ariz., on April
14, in Laguna Niguel, Calif. Witnessing the nuptials was Dave
Chen, fellow Kellogg classmate and friend. The couple honeymooned
in Tahiti. Candace continues with Baystate Health System in
Springfield, Mass., as its vice president of strategic communications
and marketing. The couple, who will become grandparents in
January, are building a new home in Longmeadow, Mass., following
the total devastation of Candace’s prior home one week
after their return from their honeymoon. “It’s
been quite a summer!” says Candace.
Birgitta
Hanan writes from New York that she is still doing loan syndications
at The Bank of New York and still living in the city. She
had a pretty quiet summer with just a few weekend trips out
of the city. She gets visitors frequently. “Barb Vass
recently visited from L.A. for her annual theater weekend
in Manhattan. We had a fun time and she’s doing great.”
I received
the following email from Angel Rodriguez with news of our
friends in Mexico. “I am still working at Baxter as
vice president of northern Latin America, which has been a
lot of fun and activity. Also, Elena and I are the proud parents
of Mariana. She is 1 year and 4 months old. Parenthood has
been a major change in our lives.
“We
get together with the Mexico group on a regular basis (Carlos
Vera, Luis Vilatela, Arturo Arregui, Martha Ayala, Fernando
Rodriguez). Luis just turned 45, and he invited us to a great
rock ’n’ roll party, with a major show in which
he played guitar and drums. It was a great day. Arturo Arregui
and his wife are proud parents of a small girl. Saludos.”
Keith
J. Aspray wrote to say that he and his wife, JoAnn, will be
moving to New Delhi, India, this fall. “I have been
assigned as general manager and managing director of UOP India
Private Ltd.,” says Keith. “It was a long and
rewarding 25-year-career with UOP.”
Indie
spent some of her summer vacation in Vail, Colo., attending
her husband’s lacrosse tournament, visiting the grandparents
and hiking and biking with the kids. While she was there,
she and her family met up with the Dwight Hilson and Mindy
who enjoy spending their summers in Colorado. Indie also spent
some time away up on the cape at her home in East Orleans.
I get
so many inquiries from classmates asking me if I have heard
from this person or that one. Your friends want to hear about
what you are up to. Please send Indie or me a quick email
so that we can pass it on to the class of 1984.
