Submitted by Bert Taube WHU-03: The Kellogg Clean Technology and Energy Affinity Group San Francisco Bay organized and held an inspiring event on lighting and energy efficiency May 26 at Applied Ventures in Santa Clara, Calif.

“Busting the Bulb: Solid State Lighting and Energy Efficiency” gathered 147 professionals and leaders from clean technology and energy investment firms and companies as well as regulators and educators. The event featured a networking and business development portion followed by a sequence of keynotes and a moderated panel.

Chris Moran, corporate vice president at Applied Materials, gave a warm welcome to an audience of alumni from 12 top business schools (Kellogg, Stanford, Sloan, Haas, Columbia, Tuck, Booth, Fuqua, Keenan Flagler, Stern, Wharton and Anderson). Many of them represented industry leaders, such as Applied Materials, Synopsys, KLA Tencor, SunPower, Philips Lumileds, Cisco Systems, Qualcomm, EnerNOC or Southern California Edison. Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, Applied Ventures, Citigroup, UBS Financial Services and JP Morgan also sent members of their clean technology and energy practices to learn more about investment opportunities in lighting and energy efficiency.

Dian Grueneich, former commissioner of the California Public Utilities Commission and partner at the international law firm Morrison & Foerster, delivered an exciting keynote about policy and regulation in lighting as defined in the California energy efficiency strategic plan. Peter Ngai, vice president of R&D at Acuity Brands and a multiple award-winner for groundbreaking developments in lighting, explained his vision of future lighting solutions. Matthijs Glastra, COO at Philips Lumileds, provided an inspiring global perspective on expected developments in lighting markets, businesses and investments.

Later, a panel moderated by Robert Walker, partner at Sierra Ventures, discussed today’s challenges in energy policy implementation, lighting technology and market development, funding of early-stage companies and the education needed to face future challenges. Karen Owyeung, CEO of Lunera Lighting, and Julian Carey, vice president of marketing at Intematix, explained how their companies deal with current challenges in the lighting space. UC-Davis Professor Kosta Papamichael described how the workforce must be developed to satisfy the need for human capital in solid-state lighting and energy efficiency. Brian Hubert, investment manager at Applied Ventures, provided insight into the everyday challenges of making the right choices when investing in lighting and energy efficiency. Dave Leonard, founder and CEO at Redwood Systems, spoke about lighting control solutions. Mikhail Haramati, regulatory analyst at the California Public Utilities Commission, explained the challenges implied in implementing California’s energy efficiency strategic plan. And Brent Marsh, founder and CEO of Eutricity, a pre-funded energy efficiency startup, described the challenges in building a new lighting and energy efficiency company. The event was sponsored by Applied Ventures, the California Public Utilities Commission, Greentech Media, OnGreen and the California Society of CPAs.
