Dear Friends: It has been a very busy first half of 2011. It was wonderful to hear about all of the wonderful changes and updates in your lives and we are thrilled to be able to share them with your classmates.
Quick note: As you know, not every picture will be included in the Kellogg World print edition, but they are included in the Kellogg World online edition. We apologize if your photo is not printed, but we hope you’ll visit Kellogg World online to see many more photos of our classmates. They’ve done a really nice job with the digital version — check it out!
First, we would like to celebrate the only wedding announcement we have for this Kellogg World edition …
Class of 2003 classmates gathered in Spring 2011 to celebrate Debbie Hartman’s marriage to Vincent Roever. Classmates present in the celebration included Marc Redman, Dean Peterson, Britta Iwen, Rebecca Leis Bagdy, Francine Wang, Alyssa Pohl Barrett, Alena Guzenko, Lu Gallucci, Chad Mizee, Valerie Weisman, Katja Roever Lindo ’04, Dean Lindo, Arnicia Fleming Harris, Jessica Yang, Leti Pearman and Emily Sun.
Next, we are continuing to populate the world with future Kellogg alumni …
Rob ’04 and Marie Solem happily welcomed their third child, Zachary, in March, joining big sisters Kayla and Megan. They are quickly learning zone defense ... though they claim they are not very good at it yet!
Rachael ’02 and Glenn Coleman had their first child, Nathan Thomas Coleman, on Feb. 19. All is well in Singapore, and they would love some visitors, if anyone is passing through!
Deniz and Margarita Cultu proudly announce the birth of Alejandro Emre on Aug. 20. He joins big sister Carolina Izel (4), who will be starting kindergarten in the fall. Alejandro is a happy boy who is full of energy— especially in the middle of the night.
In March, the Cultus escaped the Minnesota winter and headed to Maui, where they met up with Dawn Perry and Russ Cornell for a week of relaxation, warmth and whale-watching.
Amy DiMarzio and husband Garrett Zella proudly announce the birth of their son, Griffin Michael Zella. Although he was born in February 2010, given his status as second child, he is finally being introduced!
Anne (Ankle) Engelking Smith and husband Ashley welcomed Cashel Dane Smith on March 21. This baby boy was so excited for the first day of spring that he came almost three weeks early! Clearly, he has inherited the ability to make a dramatic entrance. But thanks to the ingenuity of the midwives, he was born naturally and healthy, weighing in at 7 pounds, 4 ounces. Big sister Mackey (2) is getting very good at playing with Cashel’s “piggies” and saying “Shhh...it’s okay, Baby Cashel,” whenever he cries. In other news, Anne and her family are relocating to the Washington, D.C., area as Ashley has accepted a position as assistant professor of voice and acting at the University of Maryland. Stay tuned to find out what Anne, who is a marketing director at Frito Lay (PepsiCo) for eight years, will be doing next!
Mindy (Barr) Turitz and Drew Turitz welcomed baby Theodore Barr Turitz to the world on Nov. 27. Baby Theo enjoys pulling off people’s glasses, waking up at 5:30 a.m. and the antics of his big sister, Madeline. All in all, the Turitz family is having a busy but great summer in Chicago!
Andrea Paiz and husband Jimmy Cardona welcomed twins Alexia and Andrés on April 23. At only 31 weeks, Alexia weighed 3 pounds, 5 ounces and Andrés weighed only 2 pounds, 10 ounces! They were born in Guatemala, but because they were so small and high-risk, they were flown to Miami and spent six weeks growing and developing at a neonatal unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital. They are both doing well.
Sara Schieffer Sullivan and husband James welcomed baby girl Katherine (Kat) on Dec. 14.
Our classmates are continuing to change the world professionally.
On June 14, Brian Addison started a new position as president of EveryBlock, a hyperlocal site dedicated to making your block a better place by connecting neighbors around common causes and relevant news. EveryBlock is backed by MSNBC Interactive and currently up and running in 16 cities, so Brian would love for one and all to join the discussion by creating an account at everyblock.com and spreading the good word. On the personal front, Brian’s wife Darcy, son Gavin (4) and daughter Piper (9 months) are doing great, and he’s happy to report that he’s flush with cash from winning his bet with Mike Simonton that we’d all still be here after the Rapture.
After three years of leading the product team at BrightRoll (shameless plug: one of the world’s largest online video advertising networks/exchanges), Barry Grant is excited to announce that he has joined ShareThis as VP of product. Wait, you don’t know what ShareThis does? Let’s address that immediately. When you visit a website and see all those buttons that allow you to share content (articles, blog posts, videos, etc.) across hundreds of social networks, that’s ShareThis working to help you connect with others. In his new role, Barry is working to lead development of products to bring more value to advertisers, publishers and consumers. He is still loving life in the Bay Area, with only an occasional longing for the grace and beauty of Detroit. Barry recently had the privilege of joining Jennifer McKnight in ushering in her birthday with a spectacular day of skydiving. Check out the post-dive photo!
After a year and a half in Chile (his fourth country post-Kellogg), Jan Rohde and his wife Patricia (though not a student — she was heavily involved working for Professor Carpenter and co-leading JV) decided to move again! They relocated to Sevilla, Spain, where Patricia originally is from. This means being closer to at least one side of the family, and it also means Jan has stopped working for anonymous shareholders and now works for the family. Jan has joined his father-in-law’s group of family enterprises as director of corporate development. He is leading four business units (aeronautical services, consulting, outsourcing/call center and occupational health and safety), as well as the sales, marketing and strategy functions for the entire group.
Jan comments: “It is great to combine staff with line functions, and therefore enlarging my team to more than 120 professionals. Despite the severe economic crisis (much worse than in the U.S., unemployment in Andalusia is a staggering 30 percent), we manage to grow significantly, and it is likely I’ll be able to create a few dozen jobs over the next few months. As for our family, we still have three children. Carolina is 6, Adrian is 3 and Lena turned 2 in July. We are still adapting to the new environment and certainly miss Chile, which was a great experience, and has lots of potential as a country.”
Jan has been very happy to keep in touch with quite a number of Kellogg alumni over the past few years, and sincerely looks forward to hearing from everybody else!
Karin Larson-Pollock and family moved to Seattle in July to be closer to family. Karin’s husband, Darren, is a colon and rectal surgeon and will be joining Swedish Healthcare System. Karin is taking a couple of months off and transitioning the kids before getting back into the workforce, most likely in hospital operations, which she loves. But, Karin is DEFINITELY looking forward to some time off!
After three years at PayPal, Fabio Sisinni moved to Groupon. He is joining their mobile team in Palo Alto, Calif., to run some of the mobile products and lead some strategic initiatives. Fabio said he had a fun ride at PayPal building the products and growing the business from $24 million to more than $2 billion in mobile payment annual volume but he is even more excited for the terrific growth potential, the strong mobile-use case at Groupon and the opportunity to shape the company’s mobile efforts.
John Kim was promoted to vice president and chief marketing officer at McDonald’s Japan. With 3,300 restaurants serving over 1.5 billion customers annually, Japan is the company’s second-largest market in the world.
Elena Dobinda rejoined Goldman Sachs in New York and is commuting weekly to Florida, where her family is settled. Both of Elena’s daughters are training in a full-time tennis academy and hoping one day to build a career in this field. Despite a heavy schedule, Elena is in touch with many Kellogg friends and frequently attends Kellogg alumni events in New York.
Arturo Vera and Denise Lazo moved back to Lima, Peru, in October with their two daughters. Arturo is CFO of Cineplanet, a regional movie theater chain, and Denise is VP of marketing at ServiciosADomicilio.pe, a new online directory and review site for service providers. They’re happy to be back in Peru and are enjoying family, friends and awesome cuisine.
Erich Hoefer was appointed VP of corporate development and innovation at Choice Hotels International. Erich has been at Choice since 2003 but has managed about three different careers during that time. Erich’s latest responsibilities include managing investments in new growth opportunities, both domestically and in emerging markets. Erich, Eva Katsari, Alexandros (6), and Katia (4) continue to live and thrive in the Washington, D.C., area.
Andre Winarto has been earning his frequent flier miles! He was on the road for three weeks in the United States and U.K., visiting electricity distribution companies. Andre visited London, Virginia and the Carolinas, visiting crews replacing power poles, looking at trucks to buy and talking to senior management to figure out how his company could be a world-class leader in safety. So far, Andrea has learned that his company is doing a number of things well, but there are always lots of creative ideas for safety leadership everywhere he goes. The only downside is being away from home for so long and shirking his fun role as a soccer coach for his boys.
Brian Fitzpatrick moved back to Chicago after living in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and working throughout much of Latin America. Brian took a role with Kaplan Higher Education as executive director of strategy and planning, and is enjoying the Chicago summer and reconnecting with classmates.
After 10 years in Chicago and Milwaukee, Joann and Bill Nahmias moved to Oradell, N.J. Bill is still with MillerCoors, running category solutions for the grocery channel. They’re excited about being closer to family and old friends in New York but are going to miss all of their great Kellogg friends in the Midwest.
Wishing you all a safe and healthy rest of 2011. And we can’t wait to hear more about your adventures!
