EMP-31 It’s been a while, though we try to publish what we receive, so please send us your professional and personal updates. Leading these notes we are pleased to report that our own Donnita Travis was named Kellogg’s Social Entrepreneur of the Year. You may recall that after serving as a volunteer to children in Cabrini-Green for five years, Donnita stepped down as co-founder and president of Arian, Lowe & Travis Advertising in 2001 to start By The Hand Club For Kids.
By The Hand is an after-school program with an emphasis on academics and a commitment to nurturing the child’s mind, body and soul. Located strategically throughout some of Chicago's most impoverished communities, where overcrowded and under-funded schools abound, By The Hand Club is serving more than 700 children today and plans to serve 1,000 by 2012. Donnita serves as a full-time volunteer at the organization, where she uses her management, leadership and problem-solving skills daily.
Donnita has also been recognized by Today’s Chicago Woman magazine as one of “100 Women Making a Difference,” and is the 2010 recipient of the Chicago Bible Society’s Gutenberg Award, presented in recognition of an American who has made conspicuous contributions to the cause of the Bible. For more on this worthwhile mission, please visit bythehand.org or contact Donnita at Donnita.Travis@bythehand.org.
Also, please see the adjacent photos to see who enjoyed our 15th-year reunion at Kellogg, including a great round of golf and delicious dinner at Pete Miller’s!
Elsewhere, Sharon Gleeson was wintering in Arizona and regrets not being able to make the Reunion, but sends her best to all!
Karen (VanSandt) Huffman states that she’s been crazy busy. She’s returned to work as a financial consultant, running her own business. Her focus is helping small- to mid-size nonprofits in the accounting/finance/adminstrative areas. Right now, her main client serves severely mentally and/or physically disabled adults through housing, day programs and supported living. Additionally, Karen is still busy with many other volunteer and family commitments. Recently, she went through all her EMP notebooks and found a paper she wrote about whether or not financial managers should use derivatives, which ended by gently questioning Enron's claim that they were using derivatives appropriately to manage risk. Karen states: “I was so much smarter back then.” She’s also focusing on her twins (11) and trying not leave one at a soccer field somewhere.
Winne Clonts reports she’s had a challenging year with her health but is fine, and her business,Wonderlic, has been great. She says, “It turns out that although businesses were not hiring, lots of people were being tested to go back to postsecondary training schools. Go figure!” Best of luck, Winnie — here’s to your fast and full recovery.
Congratulations to Catherine and George Bennett on their growing family!
Greetings to all from San Francisco from Lynn Monica: “Just wanted to share the news that I tied the knot. I married on April 11 on the top of Mount Tamalpais, in Mill Valley, Calif. (a beautiful place). The wedding was wonderful. It was an absolutely perfect day and great fun was had by all! My husband's name is Jon Elfin. We actually know each other from high school (but did not date) and reconnected at our 30th reunion. Totally unexpected. Jon has two children, a daughter, Jessie (12), and a son, Jake (14), so I am also a stepmom now! Lots of wonderful new changes in my life.”
Please keep the info coming. Take care, Tim and Mark
