2003
— Full-Time
First and
foremost, thank you to everyone who joined us for the five-year
reunion in May! If you can believe it, we had over 270 classmates
participate in the weekend, an amazing feat. We would also
like to thank everyone who contributed to the Reunion Campaign.
Donations like yours ensure that current and future students
(maybe some of our classmates' children?) can enjoy the same
experience we had.
Our
class, again, has been extremely busy. Changing jobs, getting
married, having kids. They say you shouldn't do all of that
in one year, well, some of you have! So, put your seatbelts
on, because in addition to our usual updates, we have a fantastic
Reunion Round-up (thank you again to everyone who took pictures
and sent them in). As always, if you have any thoughts or
updates for our next version, please e-mail us.

In
case anyone missed it in last issue's update, the Solems had
a baby! Kayla Marie was born in October and she's doing a
great job of teaching both Marie Solem and Rob '04
a thing or two about parenting.
Belinda
Marcus shares that Ariane Sylvie Roth arrived on Jan.
29. Belinda reports that she's a sweet, sweet baby, but that
doesn't surprise us!
Kyle
and Michelle Peterson are proud to announce the
birth of their twin baby girls, born on March 13. Sierra Kylie
and Sonoma Beverly arrived a bit early so they have been living
at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis and getting amazing
care by the nurses and neonatologists there. Proud Mommy and
Daddy are anxious to bring them home once they are big and
healthy! Visit their Web site babysites.com/sites/mlcirino
for additional updates on their daughters.
Our
class continues to make Kellogg proud through all of our various
career endeavors. Spencer Phua reports that he recently
left Prudential Investment Management in Newark, N.J., to
join ING Investment Management in Atlanta. He's performing
a similar role at ING as his old job: senior credit analyst
for banks, brokers and finance companies.
Josh
Miller has a new job in San Francisco working as a program
officer for the Jim Joseph Foundation, a small nonprofit foundation
that supports Jewish education. So far, he's really liking
it and finds himself thinking about Professor Steve Rogers'
Entrepreneurial Finance class at least a few times
a week as he works with colleagues to identify where the foundation
should "invest" its resources. He's also been doing
a lot of cycling these days, training for the California AIDS
Ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles in early June.
Well,
it looks like Tony Chen took the lessons from the life-changing
experience of becoming a dad and turned it into a new business
opportunity. The experience, coupled with a lot of soul-searching,
led him to create a Web site dedicated to this passion to
be a great dad. You can now check out his new Web site at
savvydaddy.com to learn more about his company.
Barry
Grant is continuing to move down in the world, and he
couldn't be more excited. After careers at GM (750k employees),
Ford (375k employees), and PayPal (6k employees), he has recently
accepted a job as director of product management for BrightRoll,
a 15-person startup in San Francisco. Barry's new job will
require him to lead all product development efforts for the
company, which is the world's largest branded video advertising
network. He's looking forward to the fast-paced action of
an online media startup, as well as to a reduction in his
commute time of two hours per day and to a Jamba Juice in
his building.
Clinton
Kent works in mergers and acquisitions for Dubai Aerospace
Enterprise, an aerospace buyout fund based in Dubai. They
have moved to the Boulder area of Colorado, as Nicky found
her ideal job in a physician-run clinic. Look them up if you
are skiing, hiking "fourteeners," or munching on
organic tofu rice cakes. This summer, they are looking forward
to hiking to the bottom of the Havasupai region of the Grand
Canyon, the last place mail is still delivered by donkey.
Lisa
Karbiner reports that she and her husband are still living
in downtown Chicago and loving it. Lisa recently left the
corporate world to start her own business, Lisa Louvre Ltd.,
a boutique fine arts company that specializes in custom-designed
oil paintings and drawings for home or business. She is thrilled
to be pursuing her longtime passion for the arts, with the
first phase of her business plan complete. Check out Lisa's
new venture at lisalouvre.com.
Rebecca
Clements took a new position with ING, but will be staying
in London (one of the first times a job change has kept Beckie
in the same city). She'll now be back on the client side,
actually investing instead of just pitching trade ideas to
clients.
Edward
Bird married Sandra Mele in July 2007 and is now a wealth
manager for private clients at M&T Bank in York, Penn.
Ed and Sandra also bought their first house and had a baby
girl. Ed reports that 2008 is his year for a nap, although
he hasn't told Sandra that just yet!
Tindley
Whipple Gilbert has been spending the last several months
learning how to juggle her career and new job with motherhood,
following eight months off after daughter Pryor was born.
As if being back at work isn't busy enough, Tindley, Huw and
Pryor have been spending many of their weekends traveling.
In March they took Pryor on her first ski trip to Breckenridge,
Colo. With memories of the great times at Whistler in their
heads, they learned the harsh reality of trying to go on a
ski vacation with an 11-month-old! It's not easy! In addition
to Colorado, the Gilberts traveled to Chicago for Pryor's
1st birthday and again for Reunion. Although they would love
to take a break, family weddings and vacations mean that Pryor
may be rivaling some consultants soon with her frequent flyer
miles.
Joanna
Shebson recently wrote to us about her experiences in
domain sales: "While I was beginning my second year at
Kellogg, Jonny and I looked for assets to sell to pay for
my weekly trips to L.A. to see him, since Jonny had a startup
in mall gift cards out there. We decided to sell seven domain
names to Scholastic Inc. that I had bought pre-Kellogg and
we were happily surprised by our ROI. The tiny investment
yielded enough to pay for all my trips through to graduation.
The experience inspired us to buy four more names.
"Fast
forward six years when Jonny walked into Target before Thanksgiving
and a saw a large ad for their credit card that read "Shop
Red." One of our purchases in 2002 had been shopred.com. Within a few weeks and thanks to the invaluable
Kellogg network, we had our second successful domain sale
and this time it covered the year I took off to have our son
Marko.
"In
the meantime Jonny's mall gift card business was a big success
and after he sold it we moved to Jerusalem, Israel, for the
year. A good friend of ours, Hayley, came to visit and mentioned
that the Mister Men cartoon characters, which we all knew
from the U.K., had just launched a TV show on the Cartoon
Network in the U.S., in conjunction with a launch of the brand
by Chorion, as the master licensee for North America. Inspired
by a Kellogg project, we had also bought mistermen.com
in 2002 as one of our four purchases, and decided to hold
on to it. So now the wheels have started to turn again and
we are beginning the process of talking with a variety of
merchandising licensees who plan to launch products in the
fall. We are hoping this story will "beat the cake"
and we will keep you posted in the next Kellogg World.
You might be wondering what the last two domain names were
that we bought: extendyourstay.com and enhanceyourmedia.com."
Congratulations
to the many classmates who recently married! The past six
months have been busy for Brigette Wolf as she married
Corey Klein in Cancun, Mexico, on Dec. 2. Several classmates
made the trip down, including Jessica Yang, Lu Gallucci,
Dean Lindo, all '03, Katja Lindo '04, Iris (Seidmann)
Snyder '03 and David Cohen '02. In February, Corey and Brigette
climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania for their honeymoon and
recently bought a house in the suburbs. With extra rooms,
they look forward to Kellogg visitors.
Anthonie
Janse van Rensburg and fiance Natasha Taylor married on
April 12 in picturesque Knysna, South Africa, a small town
nestled between the Indian Ocean and the Outeniqua mountains.
Kellogg friends Ryan O'Toole, Jami Totten '05, Chris
Bayham and wife Valerie joined Ant, Tash and the Knysna
elephants for a magical time in South Africa. Ant writes,
"Thanks to our Kellogg friends for making the long trip
out to South Africa for the wedding. It was a truly memorable
experience."
Thank
you again to everyone who forwarded their updates. Please
have a great summer and get ready to send in your updates
for the next Kellogg World edition! |
