1994 — Full-Time

Hello classmates! We have a lot of updates to share, most of which rolled in after a fishing expedition in which I shamelessly casted for news. It was great to hear from so many classmates. Thanks to all who replied.

Louise Meyer ‘94 and spouse Steve ski in Zermatt, Switzerland.

First and foremost, in unsolicited news, Adam Epstein found motivation in what classmates submitted for previous Class Notes and wrote to say: "My wife, Allison, and I realized we too had to go out and do something noteworthy, so we went ahead and had our second son. Newborn Oliver joins big brother Evan (2). So far, they're getting along quite well. Professionally, I'm still running Site Analytics, a boutique consulting practice that advises retailers on site selection and strategic growth issues. And I'm still loving being in N.Y. after 10 years."

The last I had heard from Julio Torres, he was in Boston pursuing a mid-career master's degree in public administration at the Kennedy School. Well, into public administration he went! After a 14-year absence from Colombia, Julio and wife Ingrid returned in 2005 where Julio ran for the Senate. He lost the election, but was asked to join President Uribe's team as head of the Treasury and public credit. He managed Colombia's money through February 2008. After serving his country, Julio decided "to go back to my old tricks as an investment banker." He is launching a private equity fund to invest in Latin American infrastructure. He also included news of his family, including daughter Olivia (4) and son Baltazar (2). "We are happily managing family, public life, business, and in my case, getting prepared for the half-Ironman in Miami later this year." Julio also was planning a May get-together with Sunil Hirani, Peter Graham and Simon Cheshire in Cartagena, Columbia.

Mala Nanda sent in an update from Shanghai, China, where she is the general manager for Owens Corning's insulation business in Asia-Pacific. Mala wrote to say that she is still with the same company since graduation. "My husband, Ray, my twins (6) and I moved to Shanghai about two years ago and have been enjoying the challenges and benefits of expatriate life in China," she noted. "I am spending a lot of time in India helping Owens Corning develop the energy efficient building solutions market. We have tried to take advantage of being in China to enjoy some interesting vacations, the Yangtze river cruise and the controversial Three Gorges Dam, Guilin, and Xian within China, and Thailand and Malaysia for more relaxing times. Would love to hear from Kellogg alums, so if any of your travels bring you to Shanghai, get in touch."

Lars Terney also spent the first 14 years post-Kellogg with the same employer, BCG. However, when you read this, Lars will have begun a new professional challenge in the private equity world. After Kellogg, Lars stayed in Chicago for two years before returning to Scandinavia, where he was part of the team that opened BCG's Copenhagen office. He made partner in 2001 and headed up the Copenhagen office until his recent departure. As managing partner, Lars helped to lead the office growth to 45 people and four partners. This spring, Lars left BCG to become a partner in Nordic Capital, a leading private equity firm in the Nordics that has a stronghold in healthcare and is on its seventh fund. Personally, Lars has been married to Mette for 16 years and they have two children, Helena (13, born in Evanston) and Tobia (9). Mette is happily working at home, which she has done ever since Helena was born. The Terney family is planning their first serious U.S. vacation with the kids in July, taking advantage of the U.S. dollar's value to visit New York and Chicago.

In other new job news, Alec Frisch, with his wife and daughter, has relocated from Connecticut to the Pittsburgh area. He returned to more mainstream corporate America, running part of Heinz's food service business. Still in Connecticut, Sonal (Thakar) Rinello and husband John are enjoying life with their two awesome sons, Austin (2) and James (5). Sonal also does part-time consulting work through her own consultancy, JumpStart Advisors LLC.

Continuing with news from New England, Matt Crozier is starting a new job. As of July 1, he will be the chief operating officer of Middlesex School, an independent school in Concord, Mass., where he has been on the faculty for the past four years. Matt, wife Kelly and kids Grace, Louisa and Nate are all doing great. Rudy Ruggles is also in Boston, living in Weston with his wife Anne, and kids Lindsey (11) and Tommy (12). Rudy is now working at home and enjoying zero commute. After years in consulting, first with the now-defunct Cap Gemini Center for Business Innovation and then with Monitor Executive Development, Rudy went out on his own a few years ago. He is working with nonprofits, for-profits and communities on innovative ways to address social and environmental challenges. All is good, he reports.

Nick Von Moltke wrote that he is working for Goldman Sachs, living on the Upper West Side in New York City with wife Nina and two kids, Max (2) and Ella (1). Nick said it's "not very original and seems very retro, but enjoying it nonetheless." He recently returned from his annual Ryder Cup golf trip with a group of 16 fellow alums. They went to Caso de Campo in the Dominican Republic and split up East vs. West this time, with the East getting pummeled. It is great to see a Kellogg tradition continuing!

Another of the 16 golfers, Dave Moore, also gave some details of the trip. When not golfing, Dave is working as the CFO of an early stage company, mig33. He joined the company, which offers a social networking service for mobile phones, late last year. Mig33 has over 12 million users in over 200 countries and is growing fast.

Todd Myers wrote about his latest entrepreneurial venture – movieBOOTY (movieBOOTY.com). Todd is living in New York and has been developing the company for the past year, recently launching in the U.S. "MovieBOOTY is a retail and merchandising company that enhances the consumer movie-going experience while ultimately functioning as an integrated part of movies' marketing strategy by providing and opportunity for an impulse purchase in the theater lobby. MovieBOOTY offers official and licensed merchandise, including apparel and hats, for the whole family in movie theater lobbies, similar to what takes place at Broadway productions and at concerts worldwide. As of May, we have 10 locations in North America. I'm thrilled about how far I've come in the past year and am excited to continue the growth." Todd, I thank you on behalf of my kids and now that I know it is your company, if I run across a movieBOOTY in Chicago, I promise I'll buy something.

After several international stints in England and Mexico, Kate and Mike Schoenle, now a family of seven, are happily esconced back in Plymouth, Mich. Their fifth child, Elizabeth, joined her two older brothers and two older sisters last summer. Mike was recently promoted to controller of the lighting product group at Visteon Corporation. His product group makes automotive headlamps for many of the global automotive companies. They have a competitive manufacturing footprint with facilities in India, China, Eastern Europe and Mexico. Mike says that the Kellogg teamwork principles have served him well, especially while developing finance and accounting teams around the world. Kate and Mike visited with Suzanne Konstance Casolo and her husband, Lou, and Chris Jogis and his family at New Year's.

Louise Ward Meyer and family are going on their 10th year living in beautiful Austin, Texas. Louise loves the old saying, "I wasn't born in Texas, but got here as fast as I could." Life is great in the Hill Country. Steve is still with Dell and the three Meyer girls, Elizabeth (12), Katie (10) and Lauren (8), are thriving in public schools and in a variety of after school activities. In addition to being with her girls, Louise fills her time doting on their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Bentley, volunteering for several organizations and playing tennis. The girls will spend part of June at the wonderful Camp Champions in Marble Falls, Texas, owned by classmate Susie Osborne Baskin and her husband Steve Baskin.

Chris Newell and Helen (Barnes) Newell live in Sydney, Australia, with their two beautiful daughters, Kirsten and Victoria. Chris has been working as the CEO of a startup digital video technology company, Mediaware, for the past four years. The company is now one of the world's leading compressed video processing companies and supplies the broadcasting and defence industries with software and systems. "I recently completed a trade sale of the business to General Dynamics and am now looking for my next startup to run," Chris reports. One of the GD acquisition team members, Nathan Atherley '07, is a recent Kellogg grad. Helen was promoted to director of development and government relations with her employer, Asciano. Asciano is one of Australia's top 40 companies and owns and operates the primary rail (Pacific National) and port infrastructure (Patrick's) companies. She is now responsible for the company's strategy, business development and government lobbying functions. Chris and Helen recently ran into Kevin Stephenson and wife Laura '94 in Queenstown, New Zealand. They happened to be staying next door to each other at the Millbrook resort and were introduced by their daughters! Chris shared that Kevin has left Fitch and joined Macquarie Bank.

In more news from Down Under, Elaine (Riggs) Wilhelm and her husband David (Wil) Wilhelm '95 are also in Sydney. After some time in Kansas City, they have been back in Sydney for many years. Elaine is busy with their daughters Lauren (10) and Sophie (8), as well as doing a lot of fundraising for a favorite charity.

Melissa Loew and her husband, Kelvin O'Meara, are living in Park Ridge, Ill., with their daughter, Kelsey (7) and son, Parker (4). Melissa is a regional director for Allstate Insurance and Kelvin is CFO of a privately held manufacturing company. They love to spend time at their beach house in Michigan and welcome visits from Kellogg friends!
