1982

  Etsuko Nakajima ‘82

Etsuko Nakajima retired in April. After an illustrious career in the investment world, Etsuko is now launching a career in culinary arts. Her first career began in 1972 as an investment analyst at Baker Weeks & Co. in Tokyo. Etsuko has served as senior analyst at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers from the mid-1980s through 2003, then joined Ironbound Capital Management (a global hedge fund manager) as a start-up member and limited partner until her retirement.

The inspiration for her new career began years ago. "I love traveling and I enjoy local food," she writes. "On visiting Lyon in 2003 and dining at the restaurants of Paul Bocuse and Pierre Orsi, both of them came out to greet me." After exploring foods in Spain, Portugal, France, Austria, Turkey, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, China, Kenya and Tanzania, Etsuko decided to focus on Spanish, Peruvian and Creole dishes.

Cooking classes for Etsuko began almost 10 years ago, and include the famous Kinsa School (Japan), Boot Camp at Culinary Institute of America, and San Sebastian (Spain). Etsuko feels prepared. She has now formed an eating club in New Jersey, offering aperitifs, matching wines and after-dinner drinks.

In 2009 she plans to move back to Tokyo after another stint at San Sebastian (famous for more than 600 gastronomic societies). Meanwhile, she will travel this year to Peru, New Orleans, Quebec City, Barcelona (another cooking lesson, of course), Valencia, Tarragona, Montserrat, and in early 2009 will attend Spanish wine and gastronomy seminars in New York City before her move.

Malcolm Jones sends news from Sonoma Valley. He's a graduate of the Kellogg Part-Time MBA Program and in addition to his role at Trinity Partners serves on the advisory board of the Kellogg Asset Management Practicum. This unique finance course offers an intense, hands-on opportunity for Kellogg students who want to pursue a career in the asset management arena. Malcolm hopes to return to Kellogg more often because of his role on the advisory board and looks forward to connecting with more of us. He spent 13 years in public finance/investment banking (first at Lehman, later at Kidder). He still does some advisory work in public finance, and is primarily in institutional sales. Contact him at mjones@trinitypartners.us.
