2003

Thanks to this issue's guest editor, Mike Simonton!

The two-year itch is upon us. For some 2003 grads that means making a geographic move. For others it means making a career switch. For still others it means getting engaged or getting married. For a few it means you should pick your travel destinations more selectively. But for almost everyone that means following your human instincts and trying to MAKE BABIES. And the Class of 2003 would make Yoda proud. (He says, "There is no try, just do.") About a year ago most of the pictures we saw were of people partying. Nine months later, most of the submissions are of couples with their babies. See how one thing leads to another? We only have so much space, so I cut some descriptions short. If you'd like to know the width, radius/diameter, diagonal length, number of liters it can hold (and expel) or surface area of any particular baby, or if you'd like any of the stats converted to metric, please let us know and we can provide an Excel Baby-Model for your review.

Top of the list in the "We Knew Them Before They Were Director Of Corporate Strategy At General Mills" Category is Mike Zechmeister. On June 1, he started a new job as director of corporate strategy at General Mills. He'll be responsible for driving the business strategy process at General Mills, working with senior management and the business unit and functional leaders. We're figuring Mills' senior management probably thought, "Why pay those Kellogg-grad strategy consultants big money to tell senior management what it wants to hear when Mike can do it for a fraction of the cost, twice the intellect and humor and with many fewer usages of the terms 'framework,' 'triangulate,' 'optimize' and 'solutions.'" Congrats, Mike!

Jen Posner is practicing her English accent and working words like "queue" and "lift" into her vocabulary in preparation for a move to Jolly Ol' England. Boyfriend Dave Napier '04 (but cool enough to be considered an '03 grad) is already there. He took a permanent job with Kaplan's international strategy group and will be spending his time off trying to force those Brits to embrace baseball and the Red Sox. Jen is transferring with Omnicom Group and will make salacious adverts for the telly. Brilliant. Brilliant. Cheers!

2003 classmates

From left, 2003 classmates Gina Schaer, Colby Maher, Beth Krettecos, Adrianne Agulla, Claudine Coto and Melissa Mangini celebrate a girls' weekend in New York in April.

Megan Kashner reports that her kids are now ages 7 and 4 (almost as old as Jeremy Miller). Tessa is heading off to kindergarten in the fall and Zane has freaked them out by becoming an avid reader of science fiction and a die-hard Beatles fan. Trina continues to sing, but misses her Kelloggarhythms compadres. As of mid-May, Megan moved on from her position as chief development officer at Deborah's Place in Chicago and has taken on a new challenge as the executive director of the Infant Welfare Society of Evanston. For any of you who are still in the Evanston area, Megan would welcome help in terms of volunteerism, fiscal oversight, board membership, fund-raising input and such.

Pam Supanwanid is finishing her medical internship and starting her specialty in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. She's also had some exciting travels and celebrations, meeting up with fellow Buckethead Anouk Lee and Silke Henrich, sister of her significant other Jan Henrich '02, in Australia. In April she celebrated good friend Jaimi Goodfriend's 30th birthday with Rebecca Clements, among others.

Safe in the arms of love! Baby Patkar (right, duh) with daddy Dnyanesh Patkar and mommy Kanchan Patkar '03

Leandro Dallemule reports that he and wife Patrizia have not had much sleep lately. After six months living in Milan, Leandro in January was pulled back to General Electric headquarters in Connecticut as global mortgage risk manager. In March, their 8 1/2 pound, gorgeous baby girl, Angelina, arrived healthy and happy. Luciane Gallucci and Miguel Hernandez were among the first Kelloggians to visit Angelina. Miguel helped with the baptism, as well.

Katie '04 and Joe Terino recently celebrated their son Kyle's christening in Boston. They welcomed the young Red Sox fan, Kyle Joseph, into the world on Feb. 18, weighing 7 pounds, 15 ounces, and measuring 21 inches. He delights his parents every day with his heart-melting smile and many dramatic facial expressions.

My hero, Motohiro Hojo, reports from Japan that he attended Megumi Naito's beautiful wedding in December to an HBS '03 grad. Congrats, Megumi! Hojo also reports that in May he was the MC at Kaori Okui and Paul Bray's wedding.

Joey Olivier reports that he, Charlie Agulla and Ryan O'Toole wrestled in the snow in Breckenridge at their super-secret, private, mini-Kellogg reunion this winter. They also partied with goofy hats, made crazy faces and took silly pictures of each other on their digital cameras. Then when they showed the goofy pictures to each other they would try to get the camera away from the picture-taker, which in turn led to more zany wrestling and man-horseplay in the snow.

Major-league nice guy Mark Moore reports that he and his wife Sandy recently took their new bundle of joy, six-week-old Evelyn, to her first baseball game between minor leaguers: the Portland Beavers versus the Fresno Grizzlies. He knows it's negligent to have waited an entire six weeks to get her to a game under the lights and hopes we will forgive him.

Evelyn is reportedly a snazzy dresser and has a great sense of humor. She's getting along well with 2 1/2-year-old Joseph, and the Moores are very happy, but sleep-deprived. Mark's also enjoying his job at HP, is playing lots of softball and recently joined the local Moose lodge. We're hoping for goofy pictures of Mark in a Moose hat in the next issue of Kellogg World.

From left, Wendy Siskin '02 and husband Jonathan, MJ and John Kim '03, Charlie and Adrianne Agulla (both '03) and Mary and Russell Baker '05 welcome new Kellogg energy to Team Coke.

A lot has happened in Kanchan Patkar's life over the past year — most notably motherhood and a new home. Ruhee Patkar was born on June 15, 2004, and is now 1. Kanchan is now an associate brand manager at Kimberly-Clark Corp. and enjoys being a mom to an active 11-month-old.

Catching up in Kensington (from left) are Liz and Shail Thaker '03, Michaela and Sid Sharma '03, Fiona '03 and Manuel Ho '03, Florian Funke '03, Jeff Behring '03 and Gayatri Batra '03.

Michelle and Kyle Peterson were shaking it up (literally) during a two-week vacation to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. They fell in love with the city of Vienna (and retained that love even after enduring an earthquake). The highlight of the trip was their three-day hike in the Swiss Alps. They enjoyed amazing views, saw tons of snow and witnessed an avalanche in the Alps on the mountain across from them.

class of '03 in Thailand
From left, Jan Sodprasert '03, Mac Tuntavadcharom '03, Jason Kasarda '03, Toey Jintanawan '03 and May Leevarapakul '04 share a smile for Kellogg World while relaxing in Thailand.

Clinton Kent is moving to Phoenix next month since he really, really likes to be baked alive. He's still with the same company (Honeywell), but has joined a different division doing operations strategy. He was excited to find out that his new house has a grapefruit tree — until he remembered he doesn't like grapefruit. Clinton will miss his Illinois time and has some great stories to share for any of you interested in Midwest living.

From left, Leonardo Torress '03, Lu Gallucci '03, Bernardo '02 and Kiki Silva celebrate Leonardo's special birthday.

Jason Kasarda was in the Land of Beautiful Beaches, Happy People and Long Last names (Thailand) in February and had dinner with a few Kellogg alums including Jan Sodprasert, Mac Tuntavadcharom, Toey Jintanawan, and May Leevarapakul '04. Jason left the dinner with Long Last Name Envy and is in the process of changing his to Kasardanandawong.

International woman of mystery and intrigue Sam Barnes was in Amsterdam, Milan and Rome in January, and will be on the junior varsity travel squad over the next few months with trips planned to D.C., Houston, L.A. and Boston. She's also explored the outer boroughs of NYC and has a news flash for us: You don't need a passport to go to Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx. She's not sure about Staten Island (but we could ask the Purcells). She's planning to spend next year's bonus on the wedding attendee circuit this summer.

A staged backdrop? Nope. Michelle and Kyle Peterson, both '03, avoiding avalanches in the Alps.

Tony Owen — that's Mister Tony Owen to you — reports on his wonderful Australian March wedding in Melbourne. Some Kellogg grads participated in the festivities Down Under, including Jay Owen, Daisy Hatch, Brian Gauck and Bo Kemper (EMP-1) and his family. Dan Waters and Mike Simonton participated in the bachelor party. And Nathalie Kim, Danny Koblin and Neil Pardasani attended the engagement party in January. Tony and Monique spent their honeymoon in Bali and India and are proving life is a honeymoon in L.A.

Abhiram "Abs" Chowdhry married Anuja this spring in a very traditional Indian wedding. And by traditional, he means five days, two cities and 1,000 people in attendance. He mentions that the event was made special by the appearance of three 2003 Kellogg mates: Noriyuki Urabe (who incidentally welcomed his first born, a son named Ryusuke (Ryu) Urabe in Tokyo with wife Saori on March 16), Masahirot Ito and Vikram Bhartia. Nori and Ito flew in from Japan, traveling with the wedding party on an overnight journey on the Great Indian Railways. Since the wedding, Abs and Anuja have returned to Singapore, where they welcome Kellogg friends to visit if they are passing through the "Lion City." Abs continues to work with Thomson Learning, the company he joined after graduation.

Arvin Cavartinton reports from sunny Florida that he and wife Arlis are not getting much sleep. Arlis gave birth to the first of many children they expect to have (and expect to submit news of to Kellogg World). Baby Cavartinton (answers to Orvis) weighed 6.4 pounds, was 22 inches long, 4 inches wide, 9 inches circumference and has size zero feet. Arvin also reports he was psyched to meet up with buddy Paul Obermuller, who stopped through recently on business. They talked about how "busy" they are and how they miss Andrea Washington. We miss you, Arvin!

Beth Krettecos reports (in a weak and unsuccessful attempt to keep me from publishing that she turned a decade older last month) that she and Gina Schaer, Colby Maher, Melissa Mangini, Claudine Coto and Adrianne Agulla reunited for a girls weekend in New York recently to celebrate some exciting news: Gina and Brian bought a new house in Kansas City, Mo. Can you say "NASCAR Party 2006?" Colby is excited to be returning to L.A., where she'll be in not only the same time zone, but also the same city as Brady Countryman. Colby recently donated 15 inches of beautiful hair to the charity Locks for Love. Melissa is celebrating her move to San Francisco and new job with the Gap. Claudine has returned from travels in Australia and Thailand and has a new apartment.

Pictured, from left, Chris Bayham '03, Anthonie Janse van Rensburg '03, John Yurcisin '03 and Sean Mandelbaum '03 participate in the first (and last) annual 4Q '03 golf tourney.

John Kim reports that he, Wendy Siskin '02 and her husband Jonathan, and Adrianne and Charlie Agulla got together in May to welcome a new Kellogg recruit to Coke, Russell Baker '05, who will join the company this summer.

Chris Nolte and wife Susan welcomed Truman Edward Nolte last month. The APGAR rating system gave him a nine, but Chris and Sue think he's a perfect 10. He weighed 9 pounds, 4 ounces, and measured 21 inches long. The Nolte's are really enjoying their time as parents and can't wait to introduce Truman to the extended Kellogg family.

Karen Lee and Andy Van Horn have become first-time homeowners in an itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny condo/townhouse in Los Angeles. Karen continues to forego money for power as associate director of admissions at UCLA Anderson, where she grills prospective MBA students in interviews to uncover exactly what percentage of their business school essays/applications are bald-faced lies. She was glad to see Bullfrog classmate Allen Wang in L.A. in May during his visit.

class of '03
Celebrating Jeremy Miller's birthday are Phong Huynh '03, Rob Zamacona '03, Katja Lindo '04, Brian Fitzpatrick '03, Elaine Schulze '03, Yelena Lungin '03, Ed Bird '03 and Dean Lindo '03. Not pictured.....and not in attendance: Jeremy Miller.

Todd Solow reports that he, Glenn Coleman, Jose Aragon and Danny Koblin got together for a boy's weekend in L.A. last month. They spent most of the time celebrating Jose's (and his family's) promotions and bonuses. Supposedly the pictures are so scandalous they are not fit to print in Kellogg World.

Gustavo Gouvea reports that life has been busy since graduation. He married Ana Claudia (also from Brazil) in December 2003 and they welcomed their first son on May 19 – Luiz Felipe. He has been working at Eastman Chemical as a black belt, and he and Ana Claudia are almost adjusted to life in Tennessee and the States in general. He reports it's quite different from the beaches in Rio. Hmmm? How so?

Javier Rendon has some exciting news in his life and is planning a mid-summer move from Chicago to San Francisco. He's still consulting and paying down student loans. Fun.

Dan and Alicia Waters have made the move from San Francisco to Chicago and report they are settling in nicely. They bought a small- to medium-sized mansion in the heart of Chicago and are enjoying their jobs in marketing at Barilla USA and Kraft. The editor is not sure why he wrote the last two sentences as though the Waters are one person. For clarification, Dan and Alicia Waters each have their VERY OWN job. Dan is at Barilla and Alicia is at Kraft. Each Waters is enjoying their own job (and is separately enjoying the fact that the other Waters is enjoying his/her job).

Anne Engleking is still at Frito Lay and is recently working in a very challenging innovation role, developing strategies for new product launches. And recently, a product she launched in her previous brand-marketing role was in the local news: Baked! Cheetos were named the official snack food of Texas by a state representative. She recommends you buy them, even if they're not the official snack food of your state or country.

Away from work, Anne managed to get a bit of theater into her life when she directed her personal love-interest, Ashley Smith, in a one-man show. He wrote the play and it premiered at a theater festival in Dallas called "Out of the Loop." They drew good crowds, including Julie Saliba '02 and Greg Lyons '99, and got great reviews in the news. You can read about it at ahsmith.com/peacock.

Serial entrepreneurs (not Cereal Entrepreneurs) Chad Stevens and Brian Helm have launched Signature Destinations Club at locations around the country. They are headquartered in Seattle. They're working long, long hours, but doing it for themselves, which is reportedly very nice Š and currently unfathomable to the guest editor. Check out their great site at signaturedestinationsclub.com or Google either of their names and the words "resort," "luxury" or "destinations," and you'll see how popular a few of your classmates have become.

Leonardo Torress reports that he had a big birthday party in May. Bernardo Silva '02, his wife Kiki, and Lu Gallucci came from Chicago to celebrate his 35th birthday. Supposedly, the cops came (just like his good old days at Kellogg) because the salsa and merengue were too loud! Leonardo moved to Milwaukee in November to work for Miller Brewing Co. as senior associate brand manager-Hispanic marketing and is loving it. He says Miller is a great place to work and he's looking forward to summer after a long, cold winter in Milwaukee.

Gina Schaer reports that she and husband Brian, Sara Schieffer and Sara's significant other James Sullivan vacationed in Peru recently to hike the Inca Trail. The breathtaking sights during the trip made up for the sore muscles they acquired from the thousands of steps they had to climb.

Much to his surprise, as well as ours, Gulshan Verma is still at McKinsey, where he's managed to stay in a combination of media, retail and, somewhat randomly, healthcare. For the last two years he's been telling folks, "I'll only be in consulting for another six months," but he thinks that he'll have to give up that line sometime soon.

Arnaud Beernaert recently met up with former roommate John Schweiger. John, on behalf of the entire class, we genuinely appreciate the efforts and sacrifice you are putting forth in one of the most dangerous areas of the world: Afghanistan.

Four-quarter featurette, with visiting subeditor Paulo "The Viper" Cuomo:It would seem the lives that just 24 months ago revolved around the Keg, beach volley and 6 a.m. golf games now seem more focused on nappies (diapers?), mortgages, mid-management promotions and 8 a.m. golf games. It is a sad realization that the main result of our expensive master's education is an even stronger right to a mainstream office life, where a successful day is measured as one where you actually manage to see the sun both before and after work. No, really people, I am not bitter at taking a break from work at 11 p.m. to write this! Ironically, when I sent the email asking for thoughts, it made sense that the North Americans replied — after all, you're five or more hours behind. But Marieke (Willimsky), you are an hour ahead and should not be reading your email at this time of the day! So on to business. Congratulations to Aine Denari and husband John on the arrival of Kyla Anne, born April 21. Various other 2003 babies are out there at later and earlier stages of their development. We need your photos, so send them!

Another photo comes to us from one of Europe's most exclusive addresses — Michaela and Sid Sharma's Kensington apartment. With Manuel and Fiona Ho moving into the city, there now are at least six full-time 4Qers in London. Plenty more drop in from time to time, such as John Yurcisin, who had an interesting time watching soccer in a Chelsea pub — a story you should ask him about next time he's round for a beer.

That's all we have space for, team. As you can tell, the humor has finally waned away. If anyone would like to take over Class Notes duties, just let me know and I will happily pass the conch.
