Class of '02 at wedding

Mandy McMillen married Kevin McCarthy of Nantucket, Mass., on March 5. The ceremony took place at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, Fla., followed by a reception at The Breakers Resort. Several Kellogg School alums joined in the celebration. Pictured, from left, Dan Walworth '01, Meredith Walworth '02, Brian Martin '02, Natalie Schaefer '02, Matt Schaefer '02, Julie Saliba '02, Claire Lundin '02, Michelle Beels '02 and Adriana McGrath '02. Front row, from left, Karen Wargo '02, Michele Martin '02, Mandy McMillan '02 (bride) and Kevin McCarthy (groom). Not pictured, but also in attendance, were Rebecca Schmedlen '03 and Kevan Comstock '03.

2002

Hello everyone! For this issue we attempted to move into the new millennium (a few years late) by using a tool Kellogg has developed that allows us to send mail to everyone at the most current email address. But we didn't get our usual abundance of news. This could be because the Class of 2002 all simultaneously began leading uneventful lives, but we know you too well for that to be the case. Since we've been assured that 586 messages were successfully sent, we can only assume that many of you have not updated your email addresses on the Kellogg alumni Web site (because we couldn't imagine you would ignore us). We just want to plead that you take 44 seconds to update your information at alumni.kellogg.northwestern.edu so that we can stalk everyone equally and fairly.

Now on to the fun news that we did get from our very conscientious classmates, along with some we've thrown in from the grapevine:

Marlisa Kopenski writes: "Tim Condon and I were married (after a whirlwind five-week engagement) on Feb. 19 in the living room of our new home in Madison, Wis. Since the house is in near gut-rehab condition anyway, we didn't mind decorating by painting the walls with meaningful quotes and installing candle sconces everywhere. However, after the ceremony one of the candles tipped over, lighting the marriage license on fire. We hope this is a good omen. The fact that the fire was extinguished with a Coors Light, however (no offense, Albert), seems less propitious.

"I resigned from Gallo Winery in August (leaving behind Heidi Eggert and Linsey Simpson). Then Tim and I traveled for six weeks, hitting the Kate Solomon/Dan Slivjanvoski wedding on Martha's Vineyard, visiting Brian and Michele Martin and daughter Ella in Boston, Holly Kretschmar on Cape Cod, and making our way through Bosnia, Croatia and Italy before relocating to Madison. I am senior assistant brand manager at Kraft Foods, where I work on an entrepreneurial little brand of natural/organic food called Back to Nature. I am enjoying it very much."

It looks like the second day of the month is a great day to have a baby, as we have both March 2 and May 2 births to share: Blayn Barnard Jackson and her husband Scott welcomed Hannah Elizabeth Jackson on March 2. Hannah joins big brother Mitchell. Blayn is a hedge-fund marketer in Dallas. Kristin and Andy Martelli welcomed Joseph Daniel Martelli into the world at 5:56 p.m. on May 2. The Martellis are all very happy, excited, and as it turns out, learning quite a bit from each other!

Dave Shearer and wife Molly welcomed a bouncing baby girl, Kathryn White Shearer, to their family in the wee hours of April 3. Kathryn was the first daughter born in the Shearer family since 1872!

Mark and Karen (Wesoloski) Olszewski have good news from Cincinnati: "Our son Matthew Nicholas Olszewski was born on March 29, weighing 7 pounds, 15 ounces. He is a very healthy little one and brings new meaning to the phrase, 'Up all night drinking!'"

Stephen J. Snyder and wife Anna were delighted to welcome their first child, Thomas, on May 18. Tom weighed in at 8 pounds, 5 ounces, and measured 20 inches long. The family lives in Chicago, where Stephen is a vice president with RelevantC, a small strategy consulting firm.

Melissa Schudt and her husband Karl welcomed their second daughter, Grace Regina, on May 17.

Let's now discover what life can be like after leaving consulting, from three classmates who know: Jen Glaspie left Bain & Co. last fall to launch a company called W'EDGE. They design and manufacture fashion-forward women's golf wear. You can find their duds in some 30 pro shops across the country and abroad. Check them out online at wedgeusa.com.

Doug Munro married the lovely Kim on Oct. 30 (the warmiest and sunniest day they could have dreamed of) at Rhinefield House in the New Forest, England. Kellogg attendees included Hitomi and Shinya Naka, Dave Meierding and his significant other Mika, and Veronique and Steve Vernelen. The couple's honeymoon was a fabulous two weeks in Peru, courtesy of Jim Lutz's Vaya Adventures, which they highly recommend. Doug also shares that married life is good, he's really enjoying eBay, since the lifestyle is much better and work is more interesting than consulting. He's looking forward to a trip to Japan for Dave Meierding's wedding in June.

In February, Mike Dowhan left BCG and took a role at Morningstar Inc. in Chicago as director of data operations.

After moving about the country (from Evanston to Cleveland, Ohio, in 2002–2003 and Sarasota, Fla., in 2004), Ryan Wright and family moved west to Southern California! He has accepted a position as program manager with Eaton Aerospace and the family is living in Orange County (Irvine). Ryan's position includes responsibility for managing customer programs for global accounts from Shanghai, People's Republic of China, to Brazil. The family is doing well and looks forward to hearing from Kellogg alums living or visiting L.A. or Orange County.

In January 2005, Evan Gallinson left his mergers and acquisitions job at Harris Nesbitt to join Merit Capital Partners, a private mezzanine and equity investment firm. In February 2005, Evan and Jenny had their first child, the wonderful, beautiful, future-CEO, Madeline Grace. She was born Feb 21 and is doing great.

Sweta Shah has joined Orbitz as a transportation strategy manager.

Everyone should keep drinking their Starbucks, as we now have two classmates working at the company. Mike Goehle has accepted a position in corporate strategy with Starbucks in Seattle. He joins Megan (Ainsworth) Marine, who works in product management.

Laura Smith writes: "I recently relocated to NYC to work for the NYC Center for Charter School Excellence. Our organization supports existing charter schools in New York City and also acts as an incubator for new schools. As the director of school operations, I focus on schools' back offices, helping them run as efficiently as possible so that school leaders can spend more time on classroom instruction and less on school operations. I am working with Matt Candler '98 and living with Jesse Marmon '03. Jesse and I ran into each other in the East Village my second night in the city and immediately decided we'd maximize our living space by looking for a two-bedroom apartment.

Ronnie Frankowski, Dave Wolbert and Eddie Hayden '03 were part of a team of svelte noggins who once again shaved their heads down to the scalp to raise money for CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation, a leading nonprofit whose mission is to raise as much money as possible to save lives and improve the quality of life for children with cancer. Of course, you are probably asking yourself how much of a stretch this was for our favorite follicly challenged Tennessean, but Ronnie was able to raise quite a bit of money for getting his hair (yes, purposely singular) cut. (Now, we have to apologize to Ronnie for making bald jokes two years in a row, but we figure he took his shirt off two years in a row at Kellogg so now we're even.)

We (Natalie and Julie) were happy to see each other at two fun events this spring: Amanda McMillan's wedding to Kevin McCarthy in Palm Beach, Fla., on March 5 and Michelle Beel's bachelorette party. Meredith (Petrosovics) and Dan Walworth '01, Rebecca Schmedlen '03, Kevan Comstock '03, Karen Wargo, Michelle Beels, Adriana McGrath, bridesmaid Claire Lundin, Matt Schaefer and Brian and Michele Martin were also in attendance. Mandy's exquisite taste and attention to detail made the event an unbelievable affair. Now, she is training to compete (along with her new husband) in her first Ironman Triathlon in November in Panama City, Fla. We wish them the best of luck! We were also joined by Barbara Liss, Beata (Drizin) Kirr and Adriana McGrath in Memphis for Michelle Beels' bachelorette party. We had a great time saying "Goodbye to Beels on Beale Street" and getting great decorating ideas at Graceland.

Stephanie Freeth, director of major gifts at the Kellogg School, recently received one of the university's first Garfield awards. Named in honor of NU alum Dr. Sol L. Garfield, this award recognizes an employee of the university-wide alumni relations and development staff for outstanding performance. The award carries a $500 honorarium. The citation said, "Stephanie created virtually single-handedly a major gifts office that is already beginning to show solid results ... Stephanie also happens to be an excellent fund raiser. As only one example, she led the most recent 25th reunion class to a record-breaking performance. In part through the use of a challenge grant she arranged from a key member of the (first-ever) fund-raising reunion committee, this class raised over $330,000, with a participation rate of 28 percent."

Happy summer to all!
