1995
As usual,
the Class of '95 has been busy. If you want more details than
what appears below, send a note to me at rberg@ixl.com. I
have an expanded version of the newsletter called Word of
Mouse as well as more than 400 e-mail addresses or our classmates.
On the personal front, I have survived three staff reductions
at iXL and got promoted to client partner in the retail strategy
group. Ben Berg is headed into 3rd grade this fall, Sam, his
four-year-old brother will start pre-K. I'm writing this in
San Diego as my wife Ann prepares for her first marathon.
Jan
(Peterson) McDougal and Steve Peterson had a baby in San
Francisco. Their son Kevin (2) now has a baby brother who
tipped the scales on April 30. Aileen Sebastian
is still
living in Colorado. Bruce Boren joined a bunch of 4Q's to
play golf in April, this year in Las Vegas. Attendees included
Paul Posoli,
Mike McGill, Gary Dastin, Geoff Dybas, John Sabey, Alejandro
Gonzalez, Chris Snyder, Rob Feingold, Rob Metzger and Bruce
Boren.
On the
West Coast, Dave
Mathias lets
us know that "this update is a little late." He
had the good fortune to marry a wonderful woman, Devara Rodriguez,
on July 22, 2000. It was a beautiful sunny California day
with Dan Kelly playing the roles of Best Man and Chief Prankster
as well as the following Kellogg alums attending: (Pictures
were withheld to protect the innocent!) Ben Chou,
Beverly
'96 and Eric
Cox, Eric
'96 and Beth
Daliere, Todd
'94 and Christine Dow, Jackie and Alexx Dungey, Dan Hillenbrand,
Dan Kelly, Amy Lehr, Mark Medema, Dave Mitchell, Nicole Neuefeind,
Todd Reichmann, Seth Ruthen, Rebecca Swarr, Hedi and Skip
Wipson, Pete '96 and Julie
Wheelan, and Philip Yau. After
the wedding, Devara and Dave bounced around Europe on their
honeymoon. Paris, Prague, Luxembourg, Brugge...but one of
their favorite stops was the days spent in Brussels with another
classmate Sophie and Philip Laval
and their
kids Cloe and Emma. "Once we settled back into the career
grind, Dave joined eLogic Corporation in Los Angeles in November,"
they report. "eLogic is a Web site ASP specializing in
hosted information solutions geared toward companies with
loads of content to be presented and managed. Swing by and
say hello if you are traveling through L.A."
Nick
Palmer says that he has added another budding future member
of the Kellogg Australian Club with the arrival of Matthew
Edward on Feb. 19. So far he is doing everything right and
importantly sleeping through the night already. William is
happy to have a new brother and Nick is getting used to asking
"how are the kids?" from across the country in Perth
where he continues to be stuck working.
Jose
Prado just
completed his first year as vice president, strategic planning
and development for the Broadcast Video Group in Miami. He
is enjoying life in staying in touch with Kellogg grads. No
wedding, new home or new baby, "big news" announcements
from me at this time, he says. OK, he does admit to having
a girlfriend. James Pitts and I recently had lunch
together in Atlanta before he started to work as an associate
with Jones Lang Lasalle in Atlanta in April. James is now
working with William Lampley '94 in Tenant Representation.
His son Jake turned two in April. He has also been hanging
out with Alvin Thompson and his wife Zana and his little
girl, Rhea, who was born May 8.
Patrick
Meynial and his family have moved again but he is still
living in Chile. Andrew Buss started
his own consulting company and the independent consulting
is apparently going well as he now has a team of 8 on the
ground (including Sarath Ravipati '96). Betsy Berns
has been busy. She had a new baby girl on March 4. Her name
is Hunter Ariana and she's just 14 months younger than her
sister Drew. She is "having a blast with our baby girls
and are happy to say we know almost every Sesame Street song
ever written." She is coming out with a new book this
summer. It will be called Win, Place & Show: An Introduction
to the Thrill of Thoroughbred Racing. The
Daily Racing Form is
publishing it and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association
(NTRA) will be helping market the book. Look for details on
her Web site (www.femalefan.com).
All I
can say about Liz Wald is that this girl can travel.
I have been getting missives from her on a regular basis as
she has been racking up the frequent hiking miles. According
to her, "Since returning from Chile I have been able
to catch up with friends and family in N.Y., D.C. and Ore.
and spent two great weeks skiing inColorado. The biggest adventure
of all, however, was the 11-day trek in the Himalayan range
in Bhutan that my friend Jen and I completed. In a word, it
was incredible!"
John
Martin has
left soliloquy.com, but is looking to stay in the New York
area as he tries something new. He went back to Evanston for
alumni weekend. Apparently, Dean Wilson talked to every GMA
president since Dean Jacobs started and 25 returned for the
weekend. Further proof that Kellogg is a lifelong thing. Mark
Medema recently
joined KIPP, a nonprofit organization that is rolling out
its successful charter school model nationally. KIPP has two
grade 5-8 public charter schools in Houston and New York.
These schools have shown outstanding improvements for disadvantaged
children. The next step is to open three schools this summer
and up to 50 in the next couple years. Not to worry, Mark
won't be teaching. He gets to work on the "operations"
side of the business. He lives in San Fran. Julie Wheelan
got the
short end of the stick when MarchFirst went under. I received
a note from her saying that they were going to take her computer
in 30 minutes. Luckily we have a forwarding address.
Ken
Ewell is still with Mainspring in Manhattan. He is with
a strategy consultancy that started with a focus on Internet
issues, and is now expanding into a more comprehensive set
of eBusiness Strategy solutions. He was promoted to vice president,
and will focus on growing the communications sub-vertical.
He now gets more specific and quantitative objectives to go
with my general sense of stress! He and his wife Lisa and
child Lindsay (5) are all doing great. Vincent Grimaldi
has had a busy year hopping between European cities. He
is now back "home" to launch a new hedge fund with
partner George Szele. You can call him if you want to crash
in New York for a weekend. Claudio Ludovisi
says that
"things are going really well here in L.A." He is
still at Warner Bros, in the consumer products group. To celebrate
the AOL union he got to go to Rock in Rio, the largest concert
in the world, 200 thousand people a day for eight days! Performers
included Sting, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers and awesome Brazilian
acts.
In December,
Brenda Jacroux started at Primus Knowledge Solutions
as a senior manager for technology partnerships in business
development. Her husband, Richard, is at ImageX.com and is
leading the implementation of their Oracle project (ugh!).
Their daughter, Eva, recently had her one-year birthday party!
She's very busy "talking" to anyone who's around
and crawling all over the place. Carissa Ganelli launched
a new company after she and Andrew and I were on vacation
in Peru and Ecuador. The name of the firm is CompetEmail which
monitors your competitors' e-mail marketing efforts. CompetEmail
provides you with competitive intelligence that assists you
in proactively developing your direct e-mail marketing strategy.
Erin
(O'Malia) Gehan, Bob,
and daughter Bridget are living in Morris Township N.J. She
is running Bayer's Kid's Vitamins business now (Flintstones
and One-A-Day Kids), and also running around after Bridget.
She'll be turning one in March and time really has flown by.
Kelly Adams has been working in NYC for a division of GuinessUDV
for about a year now. She has been busy as senior brand manager
on Johnnie Walker Scotch Whisky. She recently launched a new
"Keep Walking" campaign and keepwalking.com, where
we have established the Keep Walking Fund. Her firm is awarding
up to $500,000 in grants to help people "pursue their
dreams." It's a great opportunity to get some seed funding
to start a business, but we are also funding non-business
dreams. Last year they even funded an expedition to the North
Pole!
Jane
Hunter and her husband Mark are the parents of a baby
boy named Hugh Joseph Walsh, born on Nov. 20. As you can imagine,
they are completely in love with him. After her maternity
leave, she returned to be the marketing director on J&B Whisky.
Charlotte Cudlip Bartol was
in London visiting for a week and got together with Nick Palmer
when he was in town for his grandmother's 90th birthday. It
was great to see both of them. Nick and Liz have an adorable
boy (age 4) named Will.
Margaret
Godfrey is
continuing to direct the Strategic Consulting group for Giant
Step in Chicago. Giant Step is a small firm that makes CRM
and user-experience focused Web sites for large companies
like GM, Proctor & Gamble and Lexis-Nexis. She has been here
for a year-and-a-half and they have already more than doubled
the strategy group, despite the dot-com market slump. Kelley
Rich
still
at SC Johnson and heading up their e-Commerce initiatives
(B2C focused). Her husband Kris took a job at Motorola in
corporate strategy a little less than a year ago and gave
up the consulting lifestyle (yea!). The whole family really
enjoys having him home.
Melissa
and Lars Hem remain in the Boston area working the same
jobs. She is working part time at Gillette three days per
week and really enjoys the work/family balance. Lars is still
at Stonebridge Associates, a small investment bank. Their
daughter Jessica just turned two. It is a wonderful age but
she is a handful. Lisa
Morrell recently
left her position as vice president of marketing for a division
of Royal Bank of Canada. She had been there for two years,
through an IPO and acquisition. She has started up the marketing
function for a start-up company headed by the husband of one
of my Kellogg friends, Sheila
Samii
(now
Matuscak), in Chicago. Matthew Reeves reports in from
Japan where after 2 1/2 years with Trek Japan, he has accepted
a position with Burton Corporation (Snowboards and related
products as well as the Gravis footwear brand) as a corporate
vice president and head of their Japanese operations. He reports
directly to the president in the U.S. and will also become
a member of the company's global executive committee. The
change does, however, require a move from Kobe to Tokyo. Ouch!
Avery
Schmeisser has
big news as she bought a house in Darien, Conn. About time.
"Have guest room should anyone be coming this way and
need a place to crash." She's right on the Metro North
train line from the Big Apple and still trying to get people
to drink the good stuff -- Sauza Tequila. Bruce Boren has
moved back to Mexico City. He "just could not stay away
from the active volcano!" He is now running corporate
development for SKY Global Networks here. They are a DTH satellite
TV provider (JV between News Corp., Televisa and Liberty Media).
Ed Brady and his wife Holly had a baby boy, Alexander
John, their first, in London, where they have been living
for over a year. He was a big one at 9 pounds 7 ounces! Axex
is already looking forward to joining a play group with Jane
(Hunter) Walsh's new son, Hugh, who lives nearby!
Todd
Reichmann wants
to make sure that everybody knows that he has posted all of
his old "Bad Attitude Corner" columns from The Merger
on his Web site (along with photos) at www.toddreichmann.com.
Rick Kuzyk reports
that he and Jane
Wachowich now have three kids: Elizabeth (7), Jack (4),
Eva (3). They are enjoying all that kids hat age entail. They
moved to an old (for Calgary) home, built in 1913 with real
character, to which they have added a kitchen with real functionality,
and bought a small place in the Rocky Mountains to get away
to on weekends. In 1997, he and partner and I started MiniBulk,
a company that procures and sells flexible intermediate bulk
containers (big woven plastic bags that hold about a ton of
dry, flowable stuff). In 2000, MiniBulk was recognized as
one of Canada's 50 hottest start-ups, and we continue our
growth with expansion into the U.S." He's always happy
to hear from classmates and looks forward to some of you visiting
him in Calgary "I'm always on the lookout for opportunities,
capital sources and great people to work with."
Simon
Rankin has
moved over to London with to work in Morgan Stanley's Canary
Wharf office. Seth Ruthen wants to let us know that
after five years in California, he has moved to NY to open
PIMCO's NY office. He is living on the Upper-West side and
is enjoying being there. Carolyn Olsen is enjoying life in
San Francisco. She is the vice president of marketing at a
company called iSaySo in SF. iSaySo sells a very unique employee
benefit to companies. They are looking for beta clients! Scott
Martin is still in Chicago where the past winter reminded
him of 1994: Cold, cold, cold. So cold it froze his eyelashes
together. He enjoyed duck hunting season with his new dog,
Missi, a choc lab.
Luk
Lau writes:
"My wife Winnie and I announce the birth of our baby
girl Joanna on Feb. 20. Winnie is busy taking care of Joanna
at home while Luk is busy at Chase's Cards business."
Fred
Lancia was
named vice president of sales of SpectraSwitch, a Santa Rosa-based
designer and manufacturer of optical switching and signal
conditioning components. Liam O'Neill was promoted
to a director position at Merrill Lynch. He is in charge of
the index products business as it relates to their corporate
and institutional client group. After four years at McKinsey
& Co., Derek
Holley had
had enough of solving other people's problems, and wanted
to solve some of his own. So he joined Jim Franke, another
McKinsey alumni, to found eTelecare International. eTelecare
International, (www.etelecare.com), provides customer service
and sales to U.S. companies from the Philippines. eTelecare
has over 500 employees, and expects to have three call centers
and 1500 employees by year's end. He may be contacted by mail
at: 602 E. Huntington Drive, Suite H, Monrovia, CA 91016.
His telephone number is 626.256.7570. Send him e-mail at derek.
holley@etelecare.com.
