Hi again, Class of ’03! As always, you’ve been busy. And we’ve noticed. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?
We start with lots to report from Jan Rohde. He and his wife had baby girl Lena Rohde Ojeda on July 17. They are now a family of five! Jan also has a new job at LAN Airlines, moving on from general manager work at TACA Regional to a project role, where he’s trying to save fuel for the environment. Jan’s now living in Santiago, Chile — his fourth country after Kellogg.
Sara and George Lane brought their second child into the world on Aug. 11. Margaret Josephine ("Margot") decided to arrive a couple days early in order to share a birthday with her older sister Millie. George is still at Deutsche Bank and says all is well in the Big Apple.
Daisie Siska and her husband Mike welcomed their son Jack Michael Siska into the world on Aug. 17. Daisie reports that it’s been crazy, but they’re enjoying every minute.
Mauricio Angulo writes that he’s been in Washington, D.C., since graduating from Kellogg. He is very happy to announce that his wife Daniela gave birth to their son Rafael on Oct. 6. On the professional front he is still working for ExxonMobil, now in a global marketing position, after completing several assignments covering the U.S. and the Americas.
Chris Nolte and his lovely bride Sue welcomed Sabine Elise Nolte to the Kellogg Nation on Oct. 30. Sabine weighed in at 8 pounds, 1 ounce and measured a full 21 inches. Truman and Hudson immediately began doting on their baby sister. Chris continues to work in private equity in Milwaukee.
Adding to the list of new kids, Henning and Cheril von Barsewisch introduced their second child, Catalina, to the world on Nov. 12. Cheril has done a career switch to full-time motherhood as she keeps up with Isla (2) and integrates the family into the German culture and way of life.
A new little fella decided to accept the offer to join Fabio Sisinni’s family on Jan. 19, coming in at 6 pounds, 13 ounces and 20 inches. His name is Leonardo and Fabio reports that he looks healthy, happy and sleepy in his new role. Brother Riccardo (2) is enjoying the company of the newborn and the new firetruck toy brought magically by the little one. After leaving Motorola and Chicago about a year and half ago, Fabio moved to sunny California and took on the exciting challenge of driving PayPal’s venture in mobile payments as director of PayPal mobile products and services. He is having fun building the team, inventing new ways consumers will use their phones to buy goods, and seeing the business growing at an amazing pace in the last year. He and Cristiana are loving the Bay Area as it reminds them of Italy, being so close to the sea, the mountains, the wineries and lots of fresh food and seafood. Give Fabio a shout if you happen to visit the Bay Area.
On Nov. 14, Andrea Paiz and Jimmy Cardona were married at a beautiful outdoor wedding in Guatemala City. Class of 2003 Kellogg friends in attendance included Jennifer McKnight, Vicki Nakata and Barry Grant. Following the festivities, the beaming couple embarked on a long honeymoon across multiple continents, enjoying some well-earned downtime.
Tim Volkema has been busy the past two years learning how to run a restaurant. After almost five years at Kraft Foods, he moved to San Francisco and opened Kasa Indian Eatery (kasaindian.com) in June 2008 with Kellogg classmate Suresh Khanna and Suresh’s wife Anamika. Suresh kept his day job at Google, but works with Kasa in his off time. They opened Kasa’s second location, also in San Francisco, in December. And just to keep things interesting, Tim and his wife Merideth welcomed their third child, Beatrice Claire Volkema, into the world on Dec. 3. Older siblings Simon (5) and Francesca (3) are very excited to have little Beatrice around.
Kristian Traylor launched a new business venture called Golf Genie which recently was named "Best Golf Product of 2010" at the January PGA Merchandise Show. His company makes instructional golf guides and mobile phone applications for all levels of golfers to assist them with any shot or problem swing they encounter on the course. Check out his Web site at golfgenieguide.com.
After being passed over several times for the roles of supreme master, monster of rock, captain of industry, thinker-outside-the-box-guy, chief daytime Web surfer and interim junior assistant undersecretary, Mike Simonton tell us he was promoted to managing director and head of U.S. leveraged finance in Fitch Ratings’ corporate group. Mike and his wife Nicole are enjoying the gorgeous Chicago winter.
Derek Yung was promoted to vice president, product strategy and planning at LeapFrog. His role is a blend of product development, marketing and strategy. He’s very excited about his new role since it’s a big step toward general management and P&L responsibilities. And he continues to really like working at LeapFrog, especially since his kids are entering their prime target years. Speaking of which, the Yung family is still living in Walnut Creek, Calif. They still don’t own a minivan, but don’t let that deceive you into thinking that they’re not a totally suburban family. Derek recently met up with Dawn Perry, Deniz and Margarita Cultu, over New Year’s weekend. They didn’t do anything crazy other than catch up and talk about how much they miss Fin D.
The Kellogg ’03s were well represented at the wedding of Colby Schwartz and Caroline Wainright on Sept. 6 in Chapel Hill, N.C. Attendees included Ben Brown, Dave Bornhoeft, Matt Brodnik, Tony Owen, Dave Feinberg, Drew Turitz, Jay Owen, Dan Waters and Naimish Patel.
Bill Nahmias moved the family back to Chicago in June after three years in Milwaukee. He is still with MillerCoors, working out of their new headquarters in the Loop. Their rooftop pub is open every day and has free beer — so drop Bill a line if you are feeling nostalgic for TG. On the personal front, Joann and Bill welcomed boy No. 2, Patrick, in December. Older brother Andrew (3.5) has mixed feelings about the new family org chart. They have enjoyed reconnecting with old friends Christy and Dean Peterson and Erin and Andy Robbins, but miss having Sue and Chris Nolte right around the block in Milwaukee.
This January, Pietro Brambilla and his family (wife Katia and son Fabrice) visited friends in Brittany, France, to taste oysters and crabs in the seaside town of Guerande. Work-wise, Pietro has been transferred to Istanbul (in Turkey for the C-grade geography students) where he will be CFO for the L’Oreal subsidiary. The next update will be from the Bosphorus.
Alex Malfitani writes that he’s still at Azul, the Brazilian airline launched by JetBlue founder David Neeleman, where he is director of finance with responsibility over treasury and financial planning and analysis. Azul is growing quickly, with 17 cities served and 2 million passengers flown in the first year (a world record). There are two other Kellogg alumni at Azul as well: Paulo Mesnik, who heads marketing and loyalty, and Raffael Alves ‘09, who works with Alex as a manager of financial planning.
Kellogg alumni in Korea gathered for a nice day of golf and ended the day with some great Korean barbecue. Il-Hyung (a.k.a. Robert) Lee left Samsung, where he worked for more than 23 years, and he began his second career at Ernst & Young as a business development executive in February. Dong Hwan Koh and Jun Hwan Kim both work at LG Electronics, Jang-Weon Seo, Tae Jin Kang ’09, and Jung Hyun Kwon all work at CJ Group, and Juh Ni Choye is with Bank of America Securities Seoul. It was a wonderful day during which all members learned once again the importance of being humble in the face of that little, uncontrollable, bumpy, nasty white ball.
After a few weeks in Ukraine, Brady Countryman was stranded in Amsterdam overnight due to a snowstorm. In a sheer coincidence, Kasper Leschley, who was en route to Denmark from China for a visit with family, found Brady in one of many booking queues and they shared a few beers in a Schiphol Airport hotel bar. Later, on his way to Perth, Australia, for more work, Brady stopped over in Singapore for the day to see Rachael ‘02 and Glenn Coleman. Finally, while working in Perth, Brady caught up with Andre Winarto, Michelle and their sons Owen and Dean for dim sum.
Finally, on a sad note, Sacha Litman recently lost his father, Jack Litman, after his long and brave battle against cancer. Our hearts and best wishes go out to Sacha and his family. |
