First things first: Yours truly is delighted to announce that classmate Tom Wieser has joined our firm, GreenSpark Energy Solutions, as vice president and regional manager. Based in Evanston, Tom will run much of our regional bizdev efforts (turnkey energy-efficiency solutions) for large customers, (e.g., supermarkets, factories, and schools, etc). and manage our new product line of food-waste reduction systems (same target market plus large restaurants and cafeterias). The economics and environmental benefits are great. Visit our revamped Web site at greensparkenergy.com. Tom also leads our recruitment efforts from Kellogg for class projects and interns.
Bill Krueger represented Nissan North America at the 2009 Heisman Award pre-party at the Times Square Hard Rock Café, presenting a plaque to each of the finalists to commemorate their top vote total as finalists. Bill also writes: "I keep busy with my wife and four children as well as preparing a lithium ion battery plant for the zero-emission, all-electric Nissan Leaf in Tennessee. I was also appointed to the board of directors of the Nashville branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta."
Julia and Bruce Guthrie welcomed second son Leander Snow Guthrie on Dec. 8. Older brother Griffin is not taking it very well.
Gerard Beenen and colleagues at Cal State Fullerton were awarded a $100,000 research grant by GMAC (the group that administers the GMAT) to study the relationship between managerial interpersonal skills and work performance. He writes: "This is a very hot topic for MBA students and graduates. We’re now seeking organizations to participate in the study. The benefits of participation are substantial and free. Anyone interested can contact me at gbeenen@fullerton.edu. More information can be found at http://business.fullerton.edu/management/gbeenen/csuf_HRstudy.pdf."
Gary Dvorchak has joined Integrated Corporate Relations, the leading investor relations consultancy, as a senior vice president. Gary will concentrate on the cleantech industry. ICR assists publicly listed companies in managing their relationship with investors and Wall Street analysts, and is often closely involved with assisting bankers and companies in the IPO process. Kellogg alums in senior management positions at cleantech-related firms, expect a call!
Sue Doctoroff is still at Trainers Warehouse, peddling innovative and playful tools to enliven the learning process. She writes: "My boys (6, 8) keep me running between various sports activities and visits to the doctor for stitches (boys will be boys). It’s been great to connect with some friendly 1992 faces on LinkedIn!"
Julia Cassidy Fitzgerald writes from picturesque Nuremberg at the international toy fair: "After seven years as SVP of marketing and product development at Vtech Learning Toys, I changed sides of the table. I went to the retail (i.e., dark) side and joined Sears Holdings as Sears and Kmart’s CMO of toys and seasonal businesses. The change has been great fun as I learn to market the retail experience, not just a toy brand. Fortunately, no relocation was needed and we still live in Chicago and my husband kept his landscape design business. I also have a blog (Mamasaysso.com) about marketing to mothers and kids and frequently discuss the toy business. Our kids are 12 and 15 and our French exchange student is also 15. It is a noisy, happy circus at our house 24/7."
Bernie Armstrong had lunch with Todd Morgan in London, but they’re still struggling to put together a combined family ski trip.
On his 49th birthday, Andy Hilliard wrote from Charlotte, N.C. to say that his company, Oneworld, a provider of near-shore IT services, has merged with another and has become Accelerance. Andy serves as president. He writes: "We provide offshore IT services through a global network of 30-plus deeply-assessed global offshore partners. Translation: lots of travel for me, assessing partners and ensuring that clients are happy and maybe a ‘Concierge Key Club’ for me. My wife, Silvia, and kids Sophia (16), Tomas (14) and Emily (12) are well. I’ve become involved in the reorganized Charlotte Kellogg Club."
Jeffrey Sacher was appointed managing director of the healthcare investment banking group at Brean Murray, Carret & Co., and is based in the Boston office.
James Conley, Kellogg and McCormick faculty member and visiting professor at the WHU in Vallendar, Germany, was appointed to the Trademark Public Advisory Committee in the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Patent and Trademark Office.
William J. Connell, previously corporate controller at McMaster-Carr Supply, was appointed vice president and controller at Duchossois Group Inc. in Elmhurst.
Yolanda Macias was promoted from SVP to EVP of business development and acquisitions at Vivendi Entertainment.
Joe Husman certainly gets out and about. He went to Barcelona in October and reunited with his Norwegian roommate from his quarter abroad at IESE. He also was at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner in Washington, where he was entertained by Lady Gaga on piano and President Obama at the Podium.
Traveling in very different circles, Paul Mistor went on another of his documentary film jaunts, this time to Mount Everest. Paul is working with sponsor Hanes Brands (owner of Champion, Duofold, Hanes, etc.) to produce a film about climber and motivational speaker Jamie Clark’s attempt to scale Mount Everest this spring. Paul writes: "We want to make a film to inspire others to realize their own ‘Everest.’ Hanes is also developing a line of extreme weather clothing. I got to meet several mountaineering legends, and we went to Mount Pumori for a practice climb. Although I wasn’t experienced enough to go to the summit, it was incredibly beautiful. Even organizing things at base camp has been a great experience. Check out climbwithus.com and climbeverestwithus.com."
This year’s most bizarre news source, The Ethiopian Review, reported that class VC guru, Matt McCall, joined New World Ventures in Chicago as a partner. Matt was previously with DFJ Portage Ventures, where he was co-founder and managing director. His investments at DFJP included EverDream, Feedburner, Imago Scientific, Lefthand Networks, Siimpel and TicketsNow. See ethiopianreview.com/news/17203 for more of Matt’s accolades and experience.
Kent Walker has surfaced after nearly 18 years! He writes that things are just crazy with a new job, major relocation, full-scale house renovation and big-time commute. He updates: "I just changed positions at J&J, which required me to move from Weston, Fla., (where I was with J&J’s Cordis division for five years) back to my home town of Montclair, N.J., about a 90-minute commute to my new position with J&J Consumer Products near Princeton, N.J. I joined Kellogg’s Alumni Council at the request of the recently re-retired Dean Wilson. It was great to be back on campus seeing Kam, Dean Wilson and the Allen Center, getting lost in Leverone, and hearing about all the changes and future plans. As many of you know, the biggest issue now is the search for a new dean. The committee presented to the council and sought and received feedback. Interim Dean Chopra is doing a good job holding down the fort during the search. If anyone has anything that they would like for me to present to the council on this or other issues, please feel free to contact me directly. To catch up with classmates, I recently met Allan DeYoung at an NYC alumni event and am trying this Facebook thing. I’ve friended 12 classmates when I get the rare chance to log in."
