EMP-39

Joyce Milner was kind enough to check in and offers the following update: "Life has been a roller coaster for the last six months or so. First oil and gas prices spiked, then energy and financial markets collapsed (taking my 401k with them). And then, when we all needed a breath of fresh air, we in the Houston/Galveston area got more than we bargained for with Hurricane Ike. My family was very fortunate, losing power and water but having no structural or medical issues. After cleaning up our yard debris (42 plump lawn/leaf bags, not including the numerous 5-to-10-foot tree limbs we pulled from the pool and surrounding areas) and realizing for too many days what life is like without being able to cook, watch television, surf the Net, drive (no gasoline) or even take a shower, it made us particularly grateful when the lights finally flickered on and life began to return to normal. Aside from that, my family and I are doing well. I hope all of our classmates are having a good (and hopefully more prosperous) year. Give me a call if you will be in the Houston area. Take care."

Ever the sports fan, Bob Driscoll writes: "Since the Super Bowl is only about one hour away and I'm still a big football fan, I thought I would just respond to this message to give everyone a quick update on the Driscolls. After spending the last three years as regional operations manager at O'Neal and traveling about 60 percent of the time, I decided to make a move in order to spend more time with my family. In August, we moved to Knoxville, Tenn., and I became the general manager for O'Neal, roughly a $50 million business covering east Tennessee. The family has adjusted fairly well and fortunately, we had some friends in the area that have introduced us to a number of other people.

"Delaney (13) is in the eighth grade and enjoys school and plays in the middle school band. Drew (12) is in the sixth grade and is active in a number of sports. Daryl (8) is in the second grade and has a passion for horses and playing with friends. Shelley is still active in the church and home schools the younger two twice a week. When I'm not working I spend most of the time doing family activities, coaching and exercising. I hope all of you are doing well and I sincerely miss our class. Please give me a call if you ever come to Knoxville."

On a sad note, we end our update with news from Stephanie Pincus: "With great sadness I report that my husband Allan Oseroff died of biliary cancer on Oct.16. For the previous 18 months following surgery at Hopkins, he had stoically continued to work while receiving chemotherapy and radiation. We traveled as much as possible to Budapest, Puerto Rico, Spain, Princeton for Parents' Day and even the Galapagos. The children spent much of September with us as we all said our goodbyes. Now I am continuing part-time work at the Buffalo VAMC, traveling for escape and dealing with the mounds of paperwork that come with being executor of the estate. I spent a weekend in Istanbul and weeks in Lisbon and Jordan, and went to California to initiate a lectureship in my husband's honor while preparing for a trek to Bhutan. My work to improve the recognition of professional women continues. Check out raiseproject.org. We are always looking for corporate support so let me know if anyone has any ideas for sponsorship. In the meantime, life is short, so eat dessert first. In my case, dessert is travel. Belated best wishes to all for a wonderful 2009."
