2001
Just
when I thought managing a huge pharmaceutical client's brand
migration to Siebel Marketing was the toughest job I could
ever undertake, then came motherhood. Nate and I were overjoyed
to welcome little (well, sort of little at 21 inches and 8
pounds, 12 ounces) Darby Claire Harrison into our lives on
Jan. 13. Of course we've had our sleepless nights, but her
little smiles melt our hearts. She has taught us the meaning
of unconditional love and reminded us how precious life is.
Judging by the number of you writing in about new additions
to your families, I know there are many classmates reading
this who share in the joys (and struggles) of parenthood.
We're so glad to finally join the club.
Welcoming
the newest additions to the 2001 family ...
Dominic
and Piper (Cutcliffe) Engels
are delighted to announce the birth of their second child,
Finn Joseph Engels, on Jan. 28. Finn weighed a healthy 7 pounds,
4 ounces, and measured 20 1/2 inches long.

Alex
Goldman and wife Linsey
became parents of twins Benjamin Jacob and Marah Rebecca on
Sept. 17. Alex is still working in finance for Travelocity
near Dallas, but he recently enjoyed a visit back to Boston,
where he and family were able to spend some time with classmate
David Joncas, his wife Lauren and daughter Elizabeth.
Gretchen
Hall and Peter Solomon
'00 had a baby girl on Dec. 20. She weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces,
at birth and her name is Sadie Olivia Solomon.
Scott
Leonard writes: "Lisa
and I are the proud parents of Samantha Leonard, born in the
fall. When not spending time with Lisa, Lucy and Samantha,
you can find me at McKinsey in Dallas."
On
Jan. 16, Clay McDaniel and Mandy Levenberg welcomed
their daughter Zoe Lev McDaniel to the world. Mandy writes:
"She came a week early, but not too soon. She's very
healthy and gorgeous. We're all about 'just in time' production
as Zoe arrived just as we finally finished all of the work
on our house. Come visit. Seattle is beautiful in the spring."
Martina
Sangin and her husband Mark are proud to announce the
birth of their daughter, Lucabella Helen Sangin. She was born
June 17, weighing in at 8 pounds, 12 ounces, measuring 20
1/2 inches. Now at nearly 8 months old, she's babbling, crawling
and the light of their lives. Martina recently returned to
work part time (80 percent) with Booz Allen Hamilton in Chicago
after an extended maternity leave, while Mark has left work
to stay home with Bella through the summer. Martina writes,
"We are loving parenthood, though it's the toughest job
we've ever had."
Corina
TMP '00 and Rich Yeh were blessed on Oct. 1 with the birth of their first child, Allison Yeh.
She was 6 pounds, 7 ounces, and 17 1/2 inches at birth, but
is now more than twice the weight and giggles when they sing
nursery songs to her. The family is still in the Bay Area,
where Corina is at Intel in a marketing role and Rich is at
Samsung in a strategic marketing role.

Several
more classmates tied the knot over the past few months ...
Jim
Argalas and Lindsey Tyler were married in Venice
in October. Many fellow 4Qs journeyed to romantic Italy to
share in an amazing weekend highlighted by a beautiful wedding
ceremony and reception. Kellogg alums in attendance included
Hagai Bar-Lev, Luca Cravero, Martin Danoesastro,
Fabrizio D'Eredita, James Gildea, Chris Hsu, Scott Leonard, Helge
Leinich, Peter Lenardos, Aldo Perani and
Damian Yu.

Matt
Bushell writes: "All good things must come to an
end, and Robb Hoenick's bachelordom is no exception.
After two-ish years since being introduced via Marisa O'Connor,
Robb Hoenick and Star Hampton got married on Sept. 18 on beautiful,
intimate Fire Island, New York (accessible virtually exclusively
via ferry; I think Robb thought about swimming across, actually).
Not so beautiful were the gusty winds and prediction for rain,
but lady luck was on the couple's side, as not one drop came
from the sky during the beach-based ceremony (thanks to Southard
Jones for putting some MMM skills on display by raking
the sand down for us). The ceremony was officiated by the
mayor (old friend of the Hampton family), highlighted by the
couple exchanging personalized vows for each other (not a
group project). What was a great group project was the entire
reception, with the bride and groom 'hanging' in the local
beachside bar beforehand, and the reception, which perfectly
reflected the newlyweds' persona (very gracious, laid-back
and fun)."
Quentin
Kluthe married Carol
Reid on Sept. 25 in Banff, Canada. Class of 2001 friends in
attendance included: Jean-Noel Poirier, Bill Berk,
Abby Berk,
Bridget Cooley, Ken Thompson, Heather Hammond, Gurmeet Ahluwalia,
Rob McClung, Rob Barry and Jeff Riedel.

Marisa O'Connor '01 married Dan Mulvihill at a seaside chapel on Cape Cod in August. |
Marisa
O'Connor and Dan Mulvihill were married at a seaside chapel
on Cape Cod on Aug. 14. They had a beautiful weekend and were
thrilled to be surrounded by many friends, including 12 of
Marisa's dearest friends from Kellogg. Julie Oh, Marisa's
roommate for five years (two in school and three in NYC),
was one of the bridesmaids, and people came from near and
far to join in the celebrations. Guests included Marni
Lefkowitz, Bridget McVerry, Juan Jose Orellana,
Julie Oh, Julie Cheng, Joanne Wong, Priti
Patel, Marie-France (Nuyen) and Doug Greer,
Robb Hoenick, Zeene (Chang) Ni and Steve Collens.
 |
Evelyn To '01 married Tae Sung Park on Dec.11 in Hong Kong. |
Marisa
writes: "It was a busy summer for Kellogg weddings with Marie-France Nuyen
and Doug Greer's in early July and Joanne Wong
and Dave Wolbert's '02 in mid-July. September brought Robb
Hoenick's wedding to one of my best friends, Star Hampton,
who also introduced me to my husband (I had to return the
favor!)." With so many weddings there was plenty of opportunity
for the Kellogg crowd to spend time together.

Robb Hoenick gives 2001 classmates another reason to celebrate with his wedding to Star Hampton on Sept. 18 on Fire Island, New York. |
On
Dec. 11, Evelyn To married Tae Sung Park, whom she
met during a job assignment in Santiago, Chile. The couple
was married in Hong Kong and is now living in Beijing, where
he is heading up a high-tech startup for an American company,
and she is actively seeking a job. Kellogg classmates who
came to celebrate included Tanya Estrella Gomez, Evan Auyang, Angela
Chen, Belinda Shi '02, Celia Chen, Chikako Iwata,
Alex Zhang '02, Yoko Yamomoto, Ying Luo, Xandra Ramos and Kuo
Loon Loh '02.
In
other news ...
Jean-Francois
Dieudonne is still working in London; he left LEK Consulting last year and joined
Sainsbury's as corporate strategy manager. Having worked at
Marks & Spencer before Kellogg, he is now back in the
wonderful world of retail, especially food retail. He writes
that it is an exciting time, as he is involved in the turnaround
of the U.K.'s third-largest food retailer (which remains to
happen — still in the early stages).
Kellogg
alumni Grant Jackson, Grant Jordan '02 and Tricia Maguire, all living in North Carolina, get together quarterly.
"Lots of pack-n-plays wherever we meet these days,"
they report.
In
July, after nearly heading to Mondavi to market its wines
with other Kellogg alums, Andrew Malkin elected instead
to remain in the book business, head to Music City and run
the international division of Ingram Book Group, headquartered
in Nashville. It is the distribution/services side rather
than product, but he is learning a new aspect of the business
and can travel to appealing wine regions (and bring Ellery
along). Andrew writes: "We sold our house in Darien,
Conn., and Ellery left Kraft/Kool Aid around Thanksgiving.
She is busy looking for a job, as well as a new home for us
near Vanderbilt. We are looking forward to meeting other alums
in this market and to playing a role with activities in Nashville.
Our current home number is 615.298.2172."
An
increasingly aged (his words, not mine!) Brian Poger (recently turned 35) is finally leaving McKinsey to start a healthcare
distribution company focused on seniors (slightly older than
him). About $700 billion of our taxpayer dollars will be going
to support a new prescription drug benefit for seniors. Brian
wants to return some of this money to his coffers. If you're
interested in joining him, or know someone who might be, reach
out and get in touch at his lifelong purple email, bpoger2001@kellogg.northwestern.edu.
The Trifecta (Steven Altschul, Trevor Cohen
and Brian) celebrated their birthdays together in San Francisco
this year in a surprise party Brian's girlfriend Lyn put together.
For those of you who missed the annual Trifecta tradition
in Chicago — don't worry, it will return in the next
couple of years.
Mike
Skurka began a new job
at HFR Asset Management in Chicago. He is the manager in charge
of HFR's single-manager hedge fund investment group.
This
year Keith Vendola stepped off Wall Street, moved to the Bay Area and joined Threshold Pharmaceuticals
as the director of business development. He says the biotechnology
company develops targeted therapeutics for cancer and benign
prostatic hypertrophy. About a week ago, the company completed
its IPO and has now begun trading on the NASDAQ.
The
inaugural "Smoon" Kellogg alumni rugby game was
held on Oct. 9 to honor Stephen Moon, an avid Kellogg rugby player who passed
away Dec. 26, 2003. The game involved the current Kellogg
team versus the Kellogg alumni rugby team. Alumni came from
all over the United States and overseas for the event, and
the weekend raised more than $5,000 for Smoon's foundation.
Alumni in attendance included Dave Malliband '00, Warren Spieker,
John
Fleming, Darren Dougan, Rob Day, Gareth Taylor,
Mike
Brodnik, Woody Maynard '02, Kevin Stineman '02,
Andrew Quarles '02, Tom Stokes '02, Albert Hwang '02, Shawn
Wischmeier '02, Matt Brodnik '03, Osvaldo Rubio '03 and Brian
Bak '04.
The
game was an overwhelming success and is to become an annual
event on the Kellogg rugby calendar. The group was honored
to be joined by Steve's three sisters for the weekend, and
the Smoon dinner on Saturday night was extremely memorable,
with a tribute to Steve's life followed by an alumni jersey
auction. As expected, the weekend wrapped up at the Deuce.
The
alumni triumphed with a well-deserved 12-7 victory. The man
of the match was Andrew "Pumpkin Head" Quarles '02,
whose pace and athleticism across the field defied his obvious
bulk. Other strong alumni performances came from Warren "Waltzing
with Spieker" Spieker, who scored the opening try and
then left the field exhausted; Tom "Foetus" Stokes
'02, who never gave up trying to bash his way through the
opposition team; Woody "I thought I was playing American
football" Maynard '02, who dropped the ball over the
line; and of course Kevin "Surprising I have no beer
gut anymore" Stineman '02, who didn't lace on the boots,
but propped up the bar instead.
Special
thanks to the current Kellogg rugby team for hosting the game,
to Mike Brodnik for organizing much of the weekend's events
and to all the alumni who attended. See you all next year!
As a reminder, donations to the Steven Moon Foundation can
be made to the North Georgia Community Foundation, c/o Mike
Brodnik, 1149 Shady Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15232.
