1994

Hello everyone! If you were understandably disappointed with my poor showing in the last Kellogg World, you won't be sorry you picked up this issue. Or maybe you will, depending on how long you were planning to spend leafing through the notes! I hope there will be enough space to print all our news and enough time for you to catch up on all that is happening with our class.

Many thanks to Betsy Schmitt who put out a call for news and to the many that responded and forwarded the messages on. It is great to hear from so many classmates and to share a lot of exciting developments. It seems just right to start with Betsy's own update! Betsy and Bill Schmitt were thrilled to be joined by daughter Haley Elizabeth, born Aug. 1. The three live in Redwood City, Calif., with their yellow lab Lucy. Bill is with Agile Software and Betsy is doing some part-time marketing strategy consulting and spending time at home with Haley. Haley is a well-traveled little one, having camped in Yosemite and traveled to Hawaii already.

Thanks to Scott Yates for sending in a thoughtful update about our classmate Paul Rebholtz. Tragically, Paul died in a plane crash Oct. 16, 2001. He is survived by his wife Amy and three young daughters. Scott recently attended a memorial weekend for Paul in Boise, Idaho, where Paul's family and friends held a kickoff event to fund the Paul Rebholtz Foundation for Athletics and Academics. Anyone interested in learning more about the foundation can contact Scott directly at sdy7@yahoo.com.

Scott also sent the following update about his life: "I feel like I have been out of touch with Kellogg and definitely want to correct this problem. As of November 2000, I am back in Chicago, living in Old Town. I left Ariba and joined an electronic manufacturer, running the OEM side of their business. When we decided to exit the OEM business and focus on retail, I left the company. With all of this happening over the summer of 2002, I met and fell in love with Elizabeth Duperier, another southerner living in Chicago. While I am enjoying my new personal outlook on life, I am searching for a business to buy and run. Working with business brokers and small business owners has been a great learning experience. One of the best parts about transition is the time off to travel — I logged 6,000 miles across the West, visiting friends, enjoying time with Elizabeth and fly fishing."

I (Suzie speaking now) have been fortunate to connect with a number of classmates in the past few months. In November, I trekked to Las Vegas for a weekend with Amy Rose, Lisa Axelrod, Sally Pofcher and Connie Gute Walsh. We had a fun, quick reunion weekend eating, shopping and hanging out. Just hours after arriving we ran into Pam Allen at the Canyon Ranch Spa! Amy lives in New York City with her husband Alan and son Jack (14 months). She has a very workable job share arrangement with Avon, which lets her have some time at home with Jack. Lisa and Mike Axelrod live in Evanston with their kids Ben, 3, and Emily, 18 months. Lisa is happily home with the kids and Mike is at Kraft, where he just recently made a move from corporate strategy to marketing. Lisa catches up regularly with Carlee Bilello who lives with Mike and their two sons in Wilmette. Sally and Scott Pofcher live in San Francisco with their two daughters Nicole, 3, and Nina, 6 months. Sally is with McKinsey and serves on several boards, including the Boys and Girls Club. Scott made a career change last summer from high-tech marketing to financial management. He is really enjoying working for Merrill Lynch in private client services. Sally and Scott catch up with a lot of classmates in the area including Alec Frisch and Doug Gillespie, along with his wife Serena and their daughter Alexandra (born in September). Trading one Kellogg neighbor (me) for another (Pam Allen), Connie Gute Walsh and her husband Jeff '93 are moving with their two girls to Wellesley, Mass. Driven by a relocation of Jeff's company, they are jockeying for an improved commute. Connie started a new job at Harvard Business School in November. She is an associate director for career services and works with potential employers to increase the number of opportunities for HBS grads — certainly a challenge in this environment. She works four days, loving the chance to spend one day during the week at home with her daughters Katie, 3, and Abi, 14 months. I am sad to be losing Connie as a neighbor, but excited to be gaining Patty Ricciardelli Sins, at least temporarily!

I live in Patty's hometown and Patty and her husband Jack are planning to move back to Boston with their two kids, Whitney, 2, and Cameron, 6 months. They have outgrown their two-bedroom apartment in New York and Patty recently left her marketing job with FOX News Channel to spend more time at home. They are going to temporarily stay with Patty's parents while they figure out where to work and settle in Boston. Patty plans to do new business development consulting for an advertising or marketing strategy company. We look forward to getting together once they move. The last time we saw each other was my and Jack's 10th Duke reunion — small world. That also happens to be the last time I saw Scott Young! Scott and Rose Klein live in NY with their two children, Emily, 3, and Noah, 3 months. Scott has worked since graduation for his family's business, Perception Research Services, and Rose is volunteering at nonprofits and taking a break from work to try to keep up with the two little ones. Scott keeps in touch with Jonathan Wilson and his family who live in Vermont and a small crowd of classmates in NY, including David Lavine and Linda Anderson, Larry Russoff and Brian Saltzman.

I recently had dinner with Grace Han who moved from New York to Boston last spring. Grace works for Adams, Harkness, Hill in health care investment banking. She recently caught up with Elizabeth (Feng) and Eric Woo who live in Belmont, Mass. I exchanged Christmas cards with Matt Crozier, who lives with Kelly in Concord, Mass. Their son Nathanial (Nate) was born in November, joining big sisters Grace, 4, and Louisa, 2. Dan Evarts and his wife Tray gave Sayle, 4, and Tyler, 2, a big Christmas present with baby brother Jackson Savoie, born Dec. 20.

I received a nice note from Marjolein Baghuis announcing the birth of her second child, Midas Luca, born Oct. 7. He joins Marjolein, daddy Koos Boering and big sister Aisha, 3. They live in Amsterdam, where Marjolein is enjoying maternity leave. She will soon return to work as a research consultant for Market and More, part of Synovate.

I ran into Pete Wheelen at Dartmouth last spring (he and my husband were classmates). Pete and Julie '95 and their son Luke came in from the Bay area for his 10th reunion. Pete sent this update: "I'm managing global marketing and business development for Lonely Planet and really enjoying it. Lots of flexibility and a bit of the 'pleasant' kind of business travel to our offices in London, Paris and Melbourne. Julie is working in marketing at Pottery Barn. Our son Luke will be 2 in June He bears resemblance to the Energizer bunny and is sure to be a star in Cirque de Soleil someday if he continues his knack for fearlessly leaping off just about anything he can find to climb. We have an equally high-energy chocolate lab who also keeps us busy — and has a habit of dismembering Luke's toys when she doesn't get enough attention. We're living just north of San Francisco in Mill Valley and spend a lot of time hiking and mountain biking in the hills around our house. Pete's email is petew@lonelyplanet.com.

A lot of news from others in the Bay Area ... Karen Jones Mak left Siebel and is launching her own real estate business and doing quite well, even in a down market. Ron Sann and his wife Jennifer have two kids — son Alexander and daughter A.J. (short for Ashley Jordan). They live in San Francisco, where Ron is running his own real estate business. Evelyn Armstrong Marks and Will Marks have a son, Max. Uzair Dada is working in venture capital with Iron Horse Ventures. Sheryl Zeldes Oloughlin is managing all of marketing for Clifbar and loves the culture that encourages regular workouts during work hours. Her husband Patrick Oloughlin has started his own company, concierge.com, and they have a son, Connor. Laura (Fink) Katter lives in San Francisco with her husband Bob and daughter Julia. Laura is at home full time with Julia. Catherine (Craighead) Briggs moved from Chicago to Northern California (Los Gatos) last summer with her husband Gary and twin sons (5-year-olds Trevor and Jonathan). Gary works for eBay and Catherine works part-time for Williams-Sonoma. She works just enough, while still having time to be involved in her sons' school and to keep on top of home renovations and projects. They like the Bay Area and Catherine says that with the remarkable weather and the beautiful scenery, it is hard to imagine living elsewhere. They live at the base of a small mountain and she walks her dog to the top every day. They are hoping to make it back for next year's reunion, which will be our 10th (hello!) and Gary's 15th. They have many good friends in Chicago that they miss. Janice Austin McKim and her husband Brent '93 live in San Jose, Calif. Janice is the CFO of an environmental consulting company called EORM and Brent is at Open Harbor, a global trade management company, where he runs product marketing and business development. Janice and Brent have two boys, Kyle, 3, and Cole, 1. I saw Ann Gnuse's wedding announcement in the New York Times last fall. She and her husband Dan live in Menlo Park and both work for Intuit.

Susan (Osborne) Baskin has her hands full with four kids and helping grow her and Steve's family camp outside of Austin, Texas, into a thriving year-round meeting center/retreat business. Susan said that she sees Louise (Ward) Meyer once in a while. She lives in Austin with her husband Steve (who works at Trilogy) and their three beautiful daughters — three blondes who all look like Louise. She actively volunteers in the community and with her children's school.

Lee (Stephenson) Johnson lives near Charlotte, N.C., with her husband and 9-month-old baby boy, Tucker. She is doing strategic planning for Lowes, which she reports is a great company. She is excited the corporate offices are moving in the fall to the next town over because right now she commutes 140 miles round trip to work! Yikes!!

Yvonne Yueh Humphreys writes that, "since graduating, I've moved around a bit — was in Sydney, Australia, for a while and then got married in Hawaii." She and Don have a baby girl (Alexandra, 14 months old), and live in the 'burbs of northern New Jersey. "I also switched fields and became a recruiter — who'd 'a thought?! We do marketing and market research opportunities. So hey, if any Kellogg folks need help — either finding jobs or helping FILL positions — I'm happy to help." Yvonne recently traded emails with Helen Barnes and Chris Newell. They are living in Sydney, Australia, with their daughters, Kirstin and Victoria.

Yvonne and Ned Ward caught up over Christmas in New Jersey. Ned sent the following update: "Things have been great here in LA. I'm working at Mattel, back on Hot Wheels, and it's a blast. 2003 is the 35th anniversary for Hot Wheels, so I got to work with the band Smash Mouth to write a theme song for us, and we'll have a movie out in 2005 that McG (director of Charlie's Angels, doesn't have a first name) will be directing that I'll get to work on. Other than that, our daughter Maia will be 3 in March and, surprisingly, likes playing with toys like her dad. Now if only we could share better ... "

Heather Sabatier wrote that she and Jamie are doing well. Heather left health care consulting at PWC three years ago when they got married. She worked at an Internet startup (ParentWatch) for a year doing business development and left that when they started their family. She is now home spending her days running around 2-year-old Jordan and 9-month-old Maya. Jamie is running corporate development at Starwood Hotels and Resorts. He has been there for almost four years and loves it. The work is terrific and the perks are great (inexpensive hotel and resort vacations!) They bought a home in the NYC suburbs a year and a half ago and are open for visitors. They get together pretty often with Stacey (Hochhauser) and Ed Witz, Patty Ricciardelli Sins and her husband Jack, and Lisa (Weinberg) and John Powers.

Noel Sy-Quia works for Manugistics and has lived in Paris full time since June. Noel travels all over Europe on business, and looks forward to hooking up with as many Europe-based classmates as possible. He hopes to meet up with Joao Caldeira da Silva and Pierluigi Antonelli in Lisbon in due course. Prior to moving from the Bay Area, Noel and Julie Roberts were colleagues for a brief period. Noel wrote that their Internet adventure was a great bonding experience and left them both "very comfortable with risk." Julie is currently doing some consulting work, and just bought a house in Noe Valley for her and her daughter Glenna.

In Chicago-area news, Kathy Miller Liu and Milt Liu had their first baby, Jasper Fu-zhen Miller Liu, in October. He is a champion eater and growing and growing and growing. She is back to work part time as the director of business development for a hospital. Milt is the chief operating officer of Flying Food Group. They bought a newhouse in Chicago and kept the old one, so they are dealing with the joys of being landlords and homeowners (not that much fun in snow when two places need to be shoveled). John Stellato moved from the city to Winnetka with his wife Julene and their two children, Karinn, 2, and Matthew, 4. Susie Silver works for Kraft in strategic marketing alliances. She continues to be an enthusiastic world traveler, going to Peru/Bolivia and Machu Picchu last May/June and southern India in January (her third trip to India since graduation). She was getting together over President's Day weekend to ski in Snowmass with Art Kessler and his wife, Richard Goozh and Bill and Betsy Schmitt. Susie also provided a brief update on a few other classmates. James Kim has moved back to NY after a long stint in San Francisco. Ryan Ruskin is in Chicago and he and Susie get together fairly often. Ryan is still working for his family business but has stopped commuting back to Pittsburgh during the week — he now works from home in Chicago.

Greg and Jessica Coleman bought a house in Lincoln Park last spring and settled in a few months before their son Henry Cooper was born in August. Jessica wrote that their house is right inside where the Old Town Art Fair takes place and they welcome visitors any time now that they have a guest room. Greg has been with Participate Systems since November 1999 and Jessica is going on six years in equity sales with First Analysis, covering New York and Minneapolis clients. Doug and Sue Warshaeur left the city and moved to Northfield, Ill. They now have three kids with their newest addition, Megan Clare, born last June. Doug and Art Kessler recently bought a company that sells products to restaurants via direct mail and the Internet. The company has been around for 20 years.

Tom Hession and his wife Missy recently had their third baby. Their son Rory was born on Christmas Eve. He joins 3-year-old Thomas 3rd (Trey) and 1-year-old Margo. They are living in Lincoln Park and Tom is with Merrill Lynch. Graham Cook just took a job with Bank of America in Chicago

Kathi and Steve Mettler are still in Connecticut. Steve is now the owner of his family's business, Circuit-Wise Inc. Kathi is with PWC. They have two children and a year-old chocolate lab named Murphy (after Murphy's bleachers).

Forman Wickes wrote that he and Nicky are still living in Wimbledon. They have a very demanding and precocious 6-year-old daughter, AimÈe. Forman is having a good time working at Information Resources and Nicky continues to work in banking, very successfully.

Scott Peterson is also in England, living in London as an ex-pat with General Mills. Based on Scott's holiday letter, it would seem that he gets A LOT of vacation! When not working to introduce salty snacks to the U.K., he continues to travel extensively.

Jim Kalishman wrote that he and his wife Amy have two daughters, 4-month-old Alyssa (Ally) and 2-year-old Amanda. They moved from Chicago to Miami about 1 1/2 years ago, and since then Jim has taken time off work to spend time with his girls. They are enjoying the warm weather and welcome any visitors during the cold winter months!

Joao Paulo Silva wrote that his second daughter, Maria Teresa, was born Aug. 20, joining Maria Carolina, 5. On Nov. 23, he and Chris Balough got together for the first time since graduation. They met in Columbus, Ohio, to watch the Ohio State-Michigan game. They saw Dave Moore, who also was in Columbus for the game. On his way back to Lisbon he spent a few hours in Chicago with Kevin Lee and his family.

Kevin Stephenson and his wife Laura TMP '93 are still living in Tokyo and do not know how much longer they will remain in Japan or where they will go next. Their daughter Sabrina, 2 1/2, can say most common animals in Japanese, but is struggling with her Kanji. They hope to see moreof Japan before leaving and plan to visit Sapporo for the annual Snow Festival. Kevin runs the structured finance group for Fitch Ratings in Japan.

Dave Gantt wrote the following: "It's been a very wonderful time for my wife Erica and myself. On Aug. 16, our daughter Catherine Grace was born and has been keeping us on our toes ever since. She is almost 6 months old now and continues to amaze us every day. I am doing some marketing consulting these days and Erica has just taken on a new senior project manager role for an executive vice president at Nortel Networks. We are looking forward to taking Catherine to her first Cubs game this summer. We expect to take many trips to Chicago to visit friends and relatives."

Scott Buckhout and his wife Marie had their first baby in September last year. Her name is Hannah Buckhout. They live in Michigan and Scott works for Honeywell. He is currently the general manager for their automotive brake pad business in the Americas and China.

Sonal Thakar Rinello and her husband John welcomed baby James in September on Sonal's birthday. They live in Greenwich, Conn., and Sonal is taking time off to stay home with James.

Suzy (Meier) DeLine is starting her fourth year in Hong Kong. She is there with her husband Rob and their 2-year-old son Tyler. Rob is still with Intel (heading marketing for Asia) and Suzy is producing and directing theater full time. Upcoming events include the Hong Kong premiere of that NY off-Broadway hit "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" and our old favorite, "Schoolhouse Rock Live." Suzy is singing with an a capella group (comprised of mommy MBAs, of course) and having a great time. They are planning on moving back to California sometime this year.

Wade Stokes sent a long and very interesting update. He wrote: "I am indeed back in Estonia with my wife Kristi and our 1 1/2-year-old daughter Katarina Ann Stokes. It has taken almost four years to get back here, but the journey was a wild one. In late 1998 I moved to Russia with Millicom, the same telco I had been working with in Estonia. However, I had to flee at the end of 1999 when my new employer, Metrosvyaz, a telco joint venture funded by Qualcomm and Leap Wireless, collapsed. I enjoyed Russia and the people tremendously, but I am very happy to be out of the whole situation. After Russia, events seem to speed up. It felt like I met Kristi (an Estonian), got married, worked on the founding team of End2End and moved to Denmark all in about six months. Denmark was a great place for us to live and like a good Dane, I rode my bike to work every day. In Copenhagen I helped get End2End, a 'mobile application infrastructure provider,' off the ground. In the end, End2End turned out to be another telco bet that was 'too early' for the market and when the Copenhagen office closed last August, we returned to Estonia. We bought a place a block away from Kadriorg, Tallinn's so-called 'Central Park.' Kalev Tanner has been back in Estonia for a few years and just became a neighbor. Estonia just joined NATO and is on the verge of joining the EU. I am searching for opportunities here that might take advantage of these events. While Kristi is finishing her degree at the Estonian Business School, I am spending a lot of time playing househusband, which means I spend a lot of time with Katarina."

Jeanne (Marcotte) Young sent in an update that she and her husband Rich work for ITT Industries Fluid Handling Systems. Jean is the director of the Ford business unit and Rich is a six sigma black belt. They have an 18-month-old son Ricky, and are adopting an infant in February. Jeanne also passed along the news that Roger Quesnel has his own M&A company and lives in South Carolina with his wife Alexa; Dave Buley is in Ohio with his wife Debra and Mala Nanda and her husband Ray live in Texas. Mala started her own business to sell imports and they have twins, a girl and a boy.

Bill Rustico married Debbie Hodges '95 in 1997. Their little girl Maggie is 2 and Bill writes that "even though I am biased, I will say that she is cute." Bill left Banc of America Securities a year ago and has been on sort of an extended "sabbatical" since then. He is interviewing and will probably return to Wall Street. He lives in Maplewood, NJ, which is 30 minutes outside of NYC. Debbie works at Deutsche Bank in NY.

Patrick Griffin and his wife Kristin live outside of Houston with their two kids, Aaron, 3, and Kate, 3 months.

Whew! If you are still with me here, that is it for the news this time around! It was a lot of fun hearing from so many people. It is hard to believe that we first were introduced as a class more than 10 years ago, and that our 10th reunion is coming up next year. Please continue to send updates. I love having the privilege of sharing the news and look forward to being in touch with more of you.
