2001

While the gloomy side of the business cycle is nothing new to many, this is my first experience with it. And as I watched 10,000 co-workers fall by the wayside at my company last year, there are many other things that serve as daily reminders of a weak economy. Like, where the heck did the free coffee go after Jan. 1? But seriously, members of the Kellogg Alumni Advisory Board and the Dean’s Advisory Board recently shared their career management insights with Kellogg students and encouraged job seekers to have patience and perseverance. So, congratulations to all those who have persevered in a difficult job market and hang in there for those of you still searching. On that note, I am happy to share with you news of new jobs, bouncing babies, memorable weddings, informal reunions, and far-off adventures.

Keep the news coming!

Congratulations to Kristin Tegtmeier Higgins and Doug Higgins, who had a baby girl on Oct. 20. The baby is healthy and happy! They are living in Redwood City, Calif. Congratulations to Darrell Hill and his wife, Anisha, who welcomed a son into the world on Sept. 30. Darrell Winston Hill, II (“Winston”) was 6 lbs., 13 oz., and 19 inches long.

Dan Matkowsky and his wife, Andi, had their second child in August. His name is Joshua Morris Matkowsky, weighing in at 21 inches and 7 lbs., 14 oz. Big sister, Dina, is very happy with the new addition to the family. And for those of you who enjoyed Dan’s performances with King Bee, Dan, Brian Black and Mike Nugent have formed an as-yet-unnamed blues band and expect to have gigs by the spring.

Elly Andriopoulou was married to George Vassilaras on Sept. 1, in Athens Greece, and the reception followed at a summer club on a cliff by the sea. Kellogg friends in attendance included Janice Dearlove, Kevin Rich, Alyssa Kennedy, and George Bakamitsos ’96. In true Greek spirit, the reception ended at 6:30 a.m. with Kevin complaining around 5:30 that some people were leaving too early! They honeymooned in Bali and have since settled in Boston.

Mariella Villa Spayde got married in August on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Jen Pack was a bridesmaid. Other Kellogg attendees were Du Chai, Sarah Chai ’03, Al Liu, Tony Joe, Kelly McClenahan ’99, Eila DeBard Johnson ’99, Jeff Johnson ’99, Derek Braddock ’00, Kanna Kunchala, and David Jennings. They are now living in NYC.

Mimi Ramesh married Bharathram on Nov. 26, in Madurai, India. Todd Wincup married Tammy Mank on Sept. 8, and many Kellogg friends attended the wedding. Todd was also recently promoted to deputy chief of staff at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Martha Wofford married John Knight on Oct. 7 on Nantucket Island. Several Kellogg alums attended, including Lisa Mazzocato Frazier, Lisa Stern Kaplowitz, Andy Kaplowitz, Isabel Pimenta, Doug Cruikshank ’92, Bill Holding, Pam Ruddick Holding, and Pam Hendrickson.

Alice Ayres Edmonds married Nathaniel Edmonds on June 9, 2001, in Washington, DC. They honeymooned in Italy and are now living in Chicago, where Alice works for Kraft as an assistant brand manager on macaroni and cheese. Several Kellogg friends attended the wedding and gathered together for a group photo.

Evan Auyang is having a great time with many Kellogg alums in Hong Kong. Picha Wattanasiritham, Alex Chan, Jenny Lee, and Larry Grace often join alumni gatherings.

Alyssa Kennedy interned with the Los Angeles Kings hockey team this summer, helping management with player salary arbitration and will be starting a new project with them shortly. Alyssa also traveled to the Czech Republic this summer to visit Jeff Zach ’02 and then to Greece with Kevin Rich and Janice Dearlove to attend the wedding of Elly Andriopolou.

Congratulations to Bob Kurinsky. He passed the Illinois Bar Exam in July 2001.

Teaque Lenahan started work in November at the Chicago office of The Hay Group, a global management consulting firm that focuses on organizational and HR strategy. He moved in with his girlfriend, Amy, to a great loft in Bucktown (Chicago) and would love visitors.

Mandy Levenberg and Clay McDaniel spent their summer with Ben Straley in Zimbabwe with Kellogg Corps working on a community business manual for Africare. Clay left Africa at the end of July to fly fish, while Ben and Mandy continued on a trip through Africa, visiting Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. After attending Todd Wincup’s wedding in D.C., Mandy and Clay moved to Seattle, where Mandy works for Amazon.com and Clay works for Microsoft.

Kelly Cornelis hosted a pre-New Year’s Eve party at her apartment in Lincoln Park, complete with an elevated disco dance floor. About 35 Kellogg alums were in attendance, including out-of-towners Shari Friedman, Kim Adams and Jen Hsu from New York, Jen Pack from LA and Lisa Lawton from Orlando. Why everyone wanted to be in Chicago in January is a mystery, but a great time was had by all!

On 02-02-02 the 3rd annual birthday bash for Trevor Cohen, Brian Poger and Steve Altschul was held at Chicago’s trendy club Kustom. The group rented out a VIP area and had birthday cake to celebrate the occasion. Many from the class of 2001 were there to extend their birthday wishes, including Chris Freeburg, Lisa Belcher and Gretchen Hall. There were also some new faces on the scene, including the love interests of party-goers Steve Sherman and Josh Daitch.
