1940s

Class Notes for 1948

Albert Pinder of Grinnell, Iowa, has been the publisher of the Grinnell Herald-Register since 1974. He has received several awards, including an honorary degree from Grinnell College in 1996 and the National Newspaper Association's Amos Award in 1999.

One project distinguishing him in the newspaper world has been the foreign visitor program which he and his family initiated in 1962. Under that program, over 400 foreign journalists and others have visited the Pinders and their newspaper offices. Another project has been a long-standing internship program which offers newspaper experience to Grinnell journalism students.

Al and his wife Dorothy have a family of six children and two grandchildren. They also enjoy visits to the East Coast, to Chicago and to sports events, as well as participation in church and civic activities.

Dorothy Fredrickson Sundberg of Addison, Ill., served as secretary-treasurer of the Gust Fredrickson Inc. construction company in Elmwood Park, Ill., until 1993. Her husband Howard was the company's president during those years, in which they built both residences and commercial buildings. They have two children and two grandchildren. Dorothy was greatly delighted in an event recently which many of the surviving members of our class have also had, namely a 75th birthday celebration with family and friends.

James Silliman of Lake Forest, Ill., still practices in his law firm, Eckhart McSwain Silliman, in downtown Chicago. His undergraduate studies were interrupted by service in the 8th Air Force, based in England, from where he completed 30 combat missions. After graduation, he worked for two years and then joined the Class of 1953 at the Northwestern Law School.

He and his wife, Lorraine Surman Silliman of '43 Arts and Sciences, have been enjoying visiting their children and traveling overseas.

Elliott Shapiro of Highland Park, Ill., operated his own business, Stacy Products, until 1989. Also a veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy following attendance in the V-12 Program at the University of Utah. The V-12 Class enjoyed a 50th reunion at Salt Lake City a few years ago. He and his wife, Nancy Obenhaus Shapiro of '50 Arts and Sciences, have three children and three grandchildren. Elliott has served as a West Deerfield township trustee for 25 years.
