EMP-31
We had
a bit of a problem with our notes last edition, so they are
now published with this submittal. Sorry for any inconvenience.
High-flying
Gary Binkoski was promoted to senior vice president
of strategic planning at ACNeilsen. The position is challenging
and fun; besides the company is doing well, as are his wife,
Cathy, and their daughters -- Christina and Nichole. Cathy
and Gary recently celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary
with a second honeymoon in Maui. Congratulations!
The affable
Richard Harewood sends his best and appreciates us
keeping him informed, while he continues his successful day
trading. Tongue in cheek, Richards asks, "Will the MM
be worth a premium to MBA sometime down the road in the market
for memorabilia?" Richard continues, "My older daughter
will be entering Northwestern as undergraduate this fall.
My younger daughter (16) completed Cornell University's Summer
College program, so she will have earned at least six college
credits prior to starting her senior year in high school at
MPA. So I guess that I need to find a job!"
Kindly
John Ayers continues his eleemosynary efforts, and
frequently runs into friends of Tim, asking them to join him
on the boards of the social service agencies John supports.
John can be reached at jayers@LQE.org.
Wild man
Mike Keefe accepted a new position within Nestlé and
will be moving to the DC area this fall. His new account will
be Ahold, an international retailer based in the Netherlands.
His better half, Jennifer, is doing fine as are Abigail (5)
and Patrick (2). Mike and Tim hooked up in South Bend for
the classic Boston College versus Notre Dame rivalry.
Avuncular
Bob Terwall writes from Cherry Electronics Corporation,
"I always enjoy your communications. Thanks for your
efforts, along with Mark Ship's, on the thankless job of trying
to keep us all in touch." Bob hasn't heard from any EMPers
in nearly a year, but would like to reconnect via rterwall@cherrycorp.com.
Entrepreneur
Greg Oslan writes, "Life remains active here.
Wireless Online is growing by leaps and bounds. We now are
approaching 100 employees, have offices in Israel, Brazil,
Texas, and California and are seriously looking at Asia. We
are beginning to position ourselves for our next round of
financing next year, perhaps an IPO. Wireless Online is having
its first opportunity to sponsor a student at Kellogg. Our
vice president of sales and service is now in the latest EMP
program. Glad to keep up the tradition! Julie, Jacqueline
and Leslie are now well settled in the valley. Going to school,
horseback riding, and swimming seem to be their main areas
of interest. I'm not getting much free time, so sleeping is
my main vice. I hope to see everyone at the next reunion."
Greg can be reach at oslan@wireless-online.com.
Man on
the move, Dave Lumley writes: "I am now in Golden,
Colo., as president and CEO of EAS, a large sports nutrition
company. We sell high protein drinks and bars (Myoplex, AdvantaEdge
brands). My family and I love Colorado and have become active
in the outdoors. Kellogg was great and has helped prepare
me and several others who work at EAS to advance. (Anyone
who wants to feel and look better, go to EAS.com and we will
take care of you!)" Dave can be reached at Dlumley@EAS.com.
A sight
for sore eyes, Rob Feder, provides us an update on
our EMP investment club, New Millennium Partners, founded
by George Bennett and Rob in 1997. The club now has 31 members,
including some non EMPers, across the country, who call in
to the monthly meetings when they cannot attend. Twice a year
they treat themselves to a dinner meeting paid for by the
club and twice a year we have a social event which includes
members and their guests. While not necessarily an indicator
of future performance, their annualized returns on investment
have soundly beat the S&P each year, 37 percent in 1998, 52
percent in 1999, and 16 percent as of fall last year. With
over $600,000 in assets New Millennium Partners has become
much more than Rob and George could have imagined when they
sat at dinner discussing the possibility of an investment
club in the fall of 1996. The hard work of the membership
has made it happen. Please contact Rob if you're interested
at r-feder@nwu.edu.
Terry
and Tim Koch celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary
over Thanksgiving weekend.
Pastoral
Mike Collins landed a big job with Cisco Systems, serving
large clients in the Midwest.
Finally,
party host Mike Mulica, Mike Collins and Tim
cheered the Wildcats on to yet another victory together this
fall. As of this writing, the Wildcats are in first place
in the Big 10, with visions of yet another Big 10 Championship!
May your
New Year be full of prosperity, good health and peace.
Spring
2001 notes
Here's
hoping you enjoyed the holidays -- except for our bowl game
loss. Like Cub fans, hope springs eternal for next season.
For all those who wrote to Jack Welch indicating that Pete
Arduini or Mark Ship should have been his successor
-- thanks! We are appealing the decision and insisting that
the ballots be recounted.
Lynn
Monika says she's "still seeking out new places I
have not seen in the world. Just got back from Egypt to dive
in the Red Sea for some scuba diving and Cairo to see the
Pyramids and Sphinx! Two things I always wanted to do. Also
had to get away from the chill."
Jay
Crookston tells us, "I have had several brushes with
EMP destiny over the past year or two. I had dinner with the
dashing Bob Levand about a year ago. He purchased a very fetching
toupee and has been hitting the gym four times a week. He
now has a striking resemblance to Mike Keefe, but with
bright red hair...and muscles. I ran into Bob Terwall
in a Red Carpet Club somewhere. I think it was Atlanta. There
he was, stuffing cheese and crackers and carrot sticks into
the pocket of his sport coat for the long flight home. He
seemed happy and successful and it was great to bump into
him.
"Over
the past three years, I've run into Todd Ryne in the
Glen Ellyn Jewel, once in the Sportmart, and unbelievably,
ran into him hailing a cab to LaGuardia airport in NYC! I
have a call center sales operation in the same building where
Mike Collins now supposedly works. I've dropped by
several times, but he's never in. Funny, the receptionist
always seems really perplexed when I ask for him, like she's
never seen him.
"Speaking
of Mike Keefe, he was recently in town for the ND/Boston College
game. I dodged a near-death experience (i.e., a Friday night
pub crawl with the Keefester) only because my daughter had
her 11th birthday party. Did I invite him to her party? Would
YOU invite him to YOUR 11-year-old daughter's party?! Seriously,
I always enjoy seeing the success of the class. Good luck
to all."
Congratulations
to Lori Craven and her Beavers of Oregon State who
beat Tim Koch's Fighting Irish of Notre Dame
this past bowl season. Lori proudly stated, "I typically
don't discuss where I went to school undergraduate during
football season - but it does look like the Beavers are real.
However, I do resonate with the ŚCats getting creamed."
Lori concluded, "Lucent has been struggling but Jim Freeburg
and I are doing fine in wireless. Jim is starting up a voice
over IP project. Pretty cool stuff."
When he's
not quoted in the Wall Street Journal -- most recently
concerning how to land a job despite less than stellar first
impressions -- Dave Lumley and family (including four
children and a granddaughter; can he/we be that old?) reside
in Evergreen, Colo., where he is president and CEO of EAS,
a nutrition company in Golden, Colo. EAS had a great year,
growing 38 percent and are number one in places like GNC.
Their "Body-for-Life" program (bodyforlife.com)
has helped hundreds of thousands change their body and life.
Dave can be reached at eas.com. The more things change, the
more they stay (the same)?
Michael.M.Morison

Bob
Terwell writes, "I always enjoy your communications.
Thanks for your efforts onthankless job of trying to keep
us all in touch."
John
Kranz writes, "Currently in L.A. on business travel
so I will not be able to enjoy Friday's get together, but
my thoughts will be with you as glasses are raised, memories
relived (i.e. the Ślog cabin' for after-class libations),
and new activities/updates shared. Speaking of which, I have
accepted a new position as EVP/COO (actually chief operations
catalyst, a new age title. Hmmm, was that taught in Org?)
for a start-up company that fuses media/advertising with real
estate channels. Plenty of challenges and opportunity in front
of me and more details to follow! Will remain based in Atlanta
with travel to initial key markets (i.e. L.A., Chicago and
Boston) for rollouts. Got to love the timing given the dot-com
fallout and economic trends. As always, best wishes to all!"
Mark
Ship has been busy traveling to and around Japan.
Merry
and Al Gerber are alive and well in South Carolina.
Where the news of the Keebler acquisition (by Kellogg -- the
cereal, not the school) was great news from their perspective.
They now have the comfort of knowing that their retirement
benefits are more secure than if a foreign company had made
the purchase! The downside, is their concern for their friends
at the Elmhurst headquarters, as many of their jobs may be
moved to Battle Creek, Mich. Al is now hobnobbing with Amoco's
former chairman, Larry Fuller, who just built a large home
nearby on the island.
Mike
Collins and Tim Koch attended the recent MBA Update program
on e-commerce sponsored by Kellogg. They encourage all alums
in the Chicago area to avail themselves to this excellent
series on current developments in the business world. This
new series replaces the old Saturday Seminar Series which
was sponsored by the Kellogg Alumni Club of Chicago.
The next
EMP-31 golf outing will again be in Chicago this late spring,
summer or early fall to accommodate more people. We'll send
an e-mail to you with the details once they're decided. Dan
Penevich, Lee Esler, Larry Silman, et al.
are organizing this great outing. Please send us an e-mail
with your current address as so many have changed, and so
many are missing.
Has anyone
heard or seen Mark Rhode?
Please
send your updates and your photos (we need more of them) to
us at 422 Berkley Avenue, Elmhurst, Ill., 60126. May the new
year bring good health, love and prosperity to you and your
families!
