After a distinguished business career and three years as Dean of the School of Business at Alverno College, Dan Horton ’78 is finally retiring |
In 2013, Peggy Cleary traveled with her husband, Peter, to Mexico City and around Bolivia, as well as to Disneyland with their daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter. So far in 2014, she and Peter have visited Guadalajara, Mexico, and spent several weeks in Norfolk, Va., with the same daughter and family. Peggy still manages a multinational elementary school office, and both of her daughters are pursuing their doctorates.
After three years as dean of the School of Business at Alverno College, Dan Horton will be retiring again, having first departed S.C. Johnson & Son as senior vice president and chief administrative officer in 2011. Dan will become full-time grandpa for his three granddaughters, and split his time between his home in Racine and the North Woods of Wisconsin.
In June 2014, Nobuo Makino resigned as senior executive director of the board of Harima Chemicals Group Inc., and chairman and CEO of Lawter. His career began 43 years ago at Sumitomo Electric Industries, and he deeply appreciates his two years at Kellogg. He intends to relocate from Chicago to Kobe, Japan.
After two years of teaching full time at Harvard Business School, Blythe McGarvie decided that her duties were taking too much time away from other priorities. While at HBS, Blythe published cases about the ambiguous choices companies make to succeed. During spring and summer 2014, she and her husband traveled to Prague and Germany, followed by a safari in South Africa to view and not harm animals. She continues to write and serve on the boards of several innovative companies.
Mark Nishan is very busy in retirement from the federal government. He joined the board of Presidential Bank FSB in 2013 and does contract work as an associate professor in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s College of Leadership Development. His daughter, Lindsay, just graduated from Notre Dame with a business IT degree and already has a job, and his son Brandon works as an engineer/technical support for a local medical devices startup. He and his wife, Mary, celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary last January.
After more than 30 years in Rio de Janiero, Peter Tenney and his wife, Denise, moved to Sao Paulo, where Peter accepted a full-time position as controller of the Ecoagro Group. Ecoagro provides financial services to Brazil’s agricultural sector as a link between farmers and the capital market. The Tenneys’ two boys stayed in Rio, where JP is a tax consultant and Thomas a freshman in college, studying meteorology. Daughter Rebeca has a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and is in New York looking for consulting work.
Justin Zubrod brought on a new partner and established a boutique management consulting firm called Zubrod/Clair & Co. The firm specializes in transportation, logistics, energy and resources, and serves operators, investors and legal counsel. The 10-person firm is located in Winnetka, Ill.
