Evanston,
IL: Six students from EMP61 took the lion's share of
the pay-out from Professor Kalai's Kalaidoscope exercise. Led
by Olivier Visa from France, a multinational team known as Group
K -- Luis Alvarez from Puerto Rico, Vanessa Borchers from South
Africa, and Andrew Hustrulid, Beth Hayden, and Dan Steenstrup
from the U.S. -- demonstrated the extent of their gambling addictions
by betting a total of $600 to net $1100 from a $1550 pot.
The
group's joint venture partners, a team coached by Doris deBeer,
collected $440 of the loot; no doubt hard-earned pay that their
colleagues would have otherwise spent on ailing grandmothers and
the like.

Acting
alone, Karl Kann, considered by some to be the Warren Buffet of
the class, wagered $250 to win the remaining $450.
Olivier's
group started with only their good names to sell. But K battled
fierce competition to prevail, thanks to his winning name. Other
gamers, allegedly Todd Hegy and Anand Pashupathy, repeatedly tried
but failed to steal Olivier's name. But competing classmates weren't
their only obstacle. Adult beverages abounded, their enticements
delivered free-of-charge by other groups hoping to melt K's steely
will to win.
Mid-evening,
Group K decided to (nearly) go Dutch with Doris and his crew. Agreeing
to split the haul 60/40, Olivier hoped to increase the chances of
being in the money. But the collusion didn't benefit K; it simply
reduced its take.
True
to form, both Group K and Karl contributed their jack to the EMP61
social fund. No reports yet as to where the Dutchman's spoils went
. . .
