Class Visit to Comedy Club No Laughing Matter

Chicago, IL: On Saturday evening, February 21, a group of EMP61'ers filed into The Second City comedy club in downtown Chicago for a heartwarming evening. The glitterati hastened to join the frolic. Model look-alikes Vanessa Borchers and her husband, Roy, left the runway long enough to attend. Latin heartthrob Luis Alvarez accompanied his chiseled features to the gala. Media man Mike Boyle, IT magnate Amin Kassem, and others also made time to join the shindig.

The evening promised to lighten the school day's load as the group nestled into their seats, chuckled with friends, and people-watched. What started, however,

as an urbane gathering slowly eroded into life imitating art; and not very good art at that. On the stage, an actor announced the President’s resignation; Don Ryan announced the group’s next barrelhouse. Comedian parents struggled to set up a video camera only to miss their toddler’s back flips and cartwheels; Shri Arora struggled with a $5.00 disposable camera only to miss some of the night’s action. Troupers exhorted stupid people not to vote; 61’ers exhorted one another not to get too stupid. On stage, a thespian couple necked in the back of a car; and . . . well . . . er . . . reports have yet to surface about any 61-related necking.

After pantomiming the real performers, 61 continued to act out. Kris Intress forced martinis down Vish Nadig's gullet as Amy Davalle looked on blithely. Hmmmph, and Professor Uzzi probably believed the “bystander problem” actually sunk in. A madman mauled Amin repeatedly with the phrase, “I love you, man.” Only the quick thinking of Anand Pashupathy saved him. As the joint caved to outright rowdiness, Mike Golden and Andrea Kallies lashed themselves together with a scarf, presumably to make it more difficult for the Chicago police to cart them off to the slammer. Fortunately, both escaped capture.
