CALIFORNIA HOSPITAL INPATIENT UTILIZATION DATA
California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) data is stored in SAS, Stata, and ASCII format on CD-ROM, one year of data per CD. Current Northwestern faculty and doctoral students may borrow the media for short periods of time, after signing and submitting a data use agreement to the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development.
The California hospital inpatient data covers the 1989 through 2004 period. Each hospitalization in the state is reported; there are over 3 million records per year. Variables available include demographic information (age, sex, ethnicity, race), diagnostic information, insurance status, patientís county and ZIP code of residence, length of stay, type of care and the disposition of the patient (arrangement that ended the hospitalization).
The OSHPD data have been used in scores of published research studies in the social sciences. Many recent NU doctoral students and undergraduate honors students have also used the data.

Kellogg's Center for Health Industry Maket Economics is a repository for OSHPD data. Current Northwestern faculty and doctoral students wishing to use the hospital inpatient data must sign a data use agreement form. Please contact Frank Limbrock at 1-8678.
