| JD-PhD
The JD-PhD Program is open to a small number of students who intend to pursue an academic career and whose research and teaching will be enriched by both the JD and PhD degrees. The program is designed to allow students to complete both degrees more efficiently than they would through consecutive degree programs. The timetable for the degree is approximately six to seven years of full-time study. The academic job placement will be either within a law school or business school.
The course of study for the JD-PhD degree will be determined through consultation with the program directors at the Kellogg School and Northwestern's Law School. The typical course of study is provided below:
| Years 1-2: |
coursework at the Kellogg School |
| Year 3: |
coursework at the Law School with the summer quarter spent at the Kellogg School |
| Year 4: |
coursework at the Law School with the summer quarter spent at the Kellogg School; develop research topics and work on research projects with the student's academic advisors at Kellogg |
| Years 4-6: |
dissertation research at the Kellogg School |
This course of study is general in nature and may be fine-tuned in subsequent years based upon the student's needs and degree requirements as a JD-PhD student. It is important that while at the Law School, the student continue to fulfill all Kellogg program requirements on time that are outlined in the Program Guidelines, be involved in the research activities of the program, and remain in contact with the graduate director.
Applicants
should apply to both schools concurrently and follow each
school's admission requirements. When applying to Kellogg,
applicants will choose from one of Kellogg's six doctoral
programs and should note within their supporting materials
that they want to be considered for the JD-PhD Program. Separate
applications to the Kellogg School and the Law School are
not required; applicants should use the online application
form available through the Graduate School: ApplyYourself.
The application is reviewed by both schools. A student will not be admitted to the JD-PhD program without the explicit approval of both the Kellogg School and the Law School. Financial aid is also available and is coordinated by the two schools. There may be rare cases when only the Kellogg School or the Law School may choose to admit an applicant to its own program.
